  • Captain Kate McCue is the captain of the cruise ship Edge, a new ocean liner by Celebrity Cruises. Captain Kate is the first female cruise ship captain in the industry, and I caught up with her when she docked her mighty vessel at Mallory Square here in Key West. The shoot, commissioned by New York Moves Magazine for their annual Power Women edition, included both an editorial spread complete with wardrobe from St Laurent and Kate's signature Louboutin heels, as well as an interview with questions both submitted by the magazine, and others I added during the course of our exchange, simply to satisfy my own curiosity.
    We had a wonderful day with an all-female team, and left walking a few inches taller (though not because we had on Kate's heels!)

    And has a great sense of humor as well. We were leaving Miami and she came on the PA and said “ we will be leaving Miami as soon as I remember what purse I left the keys to the ship in. “

    I just about cried when Captian Kate told the story about her psychological evaluation, and her smiling to much. I had a very similar experience, however I wasn't applying to be a Captian of a large vessel and responsible for thousands of lives. I was 20 years old and applying to run a bakery with a staff of 15 or so people. I had been working in the industry from 16 and had went to culinary school. I had the experience to do the job, but being so young didnt help me when I was interviewed. I didn't get my first choice bakery. I did however get my second. I was offered the job, and could start in a month as long as I passed a food manager safety test through the states health department the bakery was located in. The test was very hard, 60% of people fail the first attempt. I passed the first time with a near perfect score. The second requirement was a managers psych eval. I had to go to Seattle and sit in a class room with about 20 other people that were also about to become first time managers over staffs of different sizes. The guys running the testing center of sorts, to make sure your cut out for the job... Had us do this group exercise first. There was a white board. With 4 boxes drawn on and were titled A B C and D. We then did a 60 question personality quiz of sorts. At the end you add up your score after you self grade it. There were no wrong answers we were told at forst. Each box on the whiteboard had a score range under each letter choice. Then when done with the test you get up, guve your test to the guys running the thing, then go put a check mark in the box you fell under. I was A. When everyone was done I was the only one in the A box. Everyone else was in C and most were in D. You then learn that the most successful people to run an establishment were in the C and D range. The A slot were people were compassionate people who were usually not seen as an authority figure. I was like, well I am screwed! The whole testing session was 6 hours or so, and afterwards I remember feeling as if I were totally defeated. I did get the job though. I was told by my employer though that I needed to make sure I was stern with my employees and made sure I enforced the rules. For the first 2 months I pretended to be someone I wasn't. I went home every day feeling awful! I then just decided to be myself one day. This is when I really found myself, just as Kate said. I went on to run the most successful Bakery in the country! I fixed a profit problem the owner was having with their inventory and shrink being way off before I started. The employees were happier and customer service went from ok to top notch! The people who worked for me stayed with me for the entire 10 years I ran that place. That was unheard of the owner said to me once. I was traveling to other locations to help open new stores or fix other. I then had to stop working for a health problem. I watched as the first year of me leaving that place as it lost employees first, then customers. The place is barely hanging on now. The big companies need to have their thinking updated on the way they higher managment and corporate people. The employees that interact with their customers are where the money is! Happier employees are what makes a Corporation the best one in the pond that is the industry! Compassionate people can run very SUCCESSFUL ships!

    Kate, Wow you are an inspiration to all young girls, teenagers, and young and old women (such as myself). It is said that people cross your path for a reason and I too am a firm believer in lesson learning and things happen for a reason. I just turned 56 and have started a new journey in starting my Bachelor's Degree in Health Science, Mental Health and Addiction because the world for those suffering is tough. so in my role of advocacy, I want to be able to give the very best support I can to those who cross my path. Your interview gave me the strength and inspiration to hit the books tomorrow. I will be well over 60 years old when I graduate. Thank you so very much and one day I wish to meet you. From New Zealand

      She's as inspiring in real life/in person as she is on camera. As someone who loves to podcast and interview people, I have seen how some people have their "everyday self" and then when they get on camera or behind the microphone, they suddenly turn into a different person. Not Captain Kate. She's true through and through!

    My mother would be so proud of you. She started out with Northrup Aircraft in WWII and stayed until she got the B-2 in the air. Her only regret was that there was not the oppertunity to take a Vice President's chair for Enginerring before she aged out. Keep on smiling as I too have found that it is the best way to put others at ease and get to the bottom of any problem, plus it makes less wrinkles than scowlling. Walt Duba Morro Bay, California

    Captain Kate you are so awesome !!! You remind me so much of my late wife Karen. She was a person who had goals which she pretty well accomplished in her short life.
    She passed away at the age of 56. :(:(:( Meeting her later in life was worth the wait and I like to think she definitely made me a better person...
    She has been gone for 5 years now but life goes on...

    Not sure why you had to attach the 'first female captain' label to this excellent lady. I hope its not yet another American Brag thing.
    That title belongs to Royal Caribbean's Captain Karin Stahre-Jansen who took command of the Monarch of the seas in 2007.

    • @Kporterphotography
      @Kporterphotography  4 года назад +2

      It's a point of pride, which I can appreciate being a woman in what was once a predominantly male industry (photographers were historically always male). We can lift each other up for being a pioneer in a specific space, without detracting from our own goals and future. If you learn more about Captain Kate's story, you will see that she is very hard working and kept her learning cap on for almost 20 years to not only be the first female captain in the US, but also to be very very good at her job. Best wishes in your endeavors. EDIT - Also thank you for the information about Karin Stahre-Jansen. I was not aware of that and have updated the title of the video accordingly....though does that now technically make it "an American Brag thing"...whatever that is? #scratcheshead

      @1chish 4 года назад +4

      @@Kporterphotography I acknowledged Captain Kate's exceptional achievements. I was just pointing out your previous title was incorrect and tried to help with facts.
      My other comment was because Americans have a regular habit of saying something an American did was always the 'first' or 'biggest' or 'whatever' in 'the world' when they probably mean the USA. But to many Americans the USA is 'The World'.
