Use of legs in chi sao happens when there is nomore contact between hands, or to distract the opponent. You also have Chi gerk and thats like chi sao but with your legs Gerk is legs in chinese so sticky legs if u like...

No doubt it enriches your academic understanding of the art, but I wouldn't say it is instrumental to your success in mastering it. Would you say a boxer or a wrestler needs a profound understanding of Western culture? Which aspect of Chinese culture did you have in mind? Art? Literature? History? Surely all the time you spend studying these things could be used in perfecting your Wing Chun instead.
