Hot take. People are bored with commander because they're putting in every tutor they can and never have to think about how they can win. If every game is mull until I have tutors or a way to get my tutors then you'll be bored of the play pattern in a matter of weeks.
I have that problem as well. At one point I had around 50 decks but I have condensed down to about 20-25. However the underrated commander train will never stop.
I try to silence the urge by just making those decks on Moxfield and then not really buying them, or not most of them (currently like 42 in "ideas" folder)
I've seen some wacky commanders at my LGS. We do have an obligatory Krenko deck bouncing around (main reason why I run Propaganda and stuff like that in some of my decks... try swarming me with tokens when you have to spend 8 mana to hit me with four 1/1s sucker!), but then we also have a Gaddock Teeg of all things, an Ulamog the Defiler deck with very few creatures, a Ruric Thar the Unbowed deck, an Aminatou the Fateshifetr with a bunch of very old cards, plus my Alania Divergent Storm, Zoraline Cosmos Caller, and Lavinia Azorius Renegade decks, which are not necessarily obscure, but still very far from top 20 most popular commanders ever. I've yet to see two players running the same deck and I've only seen a handful of precons (there are two Bello Bard of the Bramble, admittedly, but they have such different decklists that I don't even count them as the same).
I ran a Volrath, The Fallen deck for many years and loved it. Your playgroup will catch on to getting domed pretty quickly after a few times and will make it tougher for you. Despite that, it's a great time and a good romp. I recommend it!
I made a Jodah deck, but instead of trying to make it powerful, which it happened to become, I just made a Theros God tribal because it was my favorite plane. I added every Theros god, and their equipment like spear of Heliod etc.
One of my friends plays an Otharri deck religiously, and that shit goes off insanely fast if you don't have an answer to it immediately. It looks like a lot of fun to play, but it's rough to play against if you're running a slower deck.
My favorite deck I've built is Eriette of the charmed apple. I did it myself without edhrec because I don't like not having my own ideas. I'm so proud of how strong the deck is and it shuts down a lot of popular netdeck commanders.
Before I even start this video, I just wanna say that I feel wonderful, knowing that I’m going to have an addition to my 20+ commanders I have in the works, and then adding it to the 30+ I have already. Thanks in advance
Shout out to my boy Legolas, Master Archer (sitting at rank 666) he's a unique spin on the typical mono-G fight deck since he scales himself up with +1/+1 when being targeted by a spell and then pings a creature for it's current power whenever you target an enemy creature with a spell, both of which "fight" spells do. He also naturally has reach which is a nice little bonus and can easily start swinging for commander lethal after a few turns of ramping.
Always love to see some fun underplayed commanders. My two favorites are: SLOGURK (simic voltron) and GALE+INSPIREING LEADER (azorius tokens). I am always trying to "build it wrong" --> taking popular archetypes and shifting them off of their preferred colors... playing popular typal decks with the least recognizable leaders... stuff like this... And it's not JUST for the "hipster cred". It is just so fun to look for the hidden strengths of the underplayed, and to try and demonstrate how they can contend with their much better known counterparts.
I like running Gimli, Mournful Avenger as an aristocrats/voltron deck. It's shocking how many sac outlets you have access to in Gruul. Throw in some token spam like Krenko and scute swarm, and you'll have a huge, indestructible commander to swing with.
Lulu Loyal Hollyphant with Cultist of the Absolute is a fun aristocrats alternative to Teysa Karlov. Instead of a life drain strategy it's more of a punch in the face strategy that will win through either commander damage or growing your token army wider and taller at the same time. I did find however that it was weak to board wipes until I put in a few Blood Artist effects to help punish that, but those effects aren't the primary source of player removal and in most games they don't gain me much more than 10 life. Honestly, I built the deck at first because I liked the idea of naming the deck Cthulhu-Lulu because of the card art on Cultist of the Absolute.
I love Ovika, Genesis engine. One of the fastest lethal decks ever with cards like surge to victory and shared animosity. At a low budget it’s my most aggressive deck City on fire, goblin bombardment, Witty roastmaster, all that goes crazy With devilish valet I’ve literally dealt tens of thousands of damage
@@LVMTG What got me into jankier decks was Atogatog, Karona, and Cromat so those 3 are my babies but im really liking skyfire kirin and blind seer. I have Naban Dean of iteration that i love but it slowly became a really strong and annoying deck so I dont pull it out that often. I honestly have so many tho I can go on and on
My most recent unloved build is Jared Carthalion, True Heir, but despite his card text caring about monarch synergy, monarch is secretly a subtheme. The real theme is lengends banding. The deck has green to find any land and so it runs all three of its colors' "legendary creatures of X color gains bands with Legends" lands, which are super unknown cards, and then a pile of legendary creatures that have triggers on taking damage. You use banding to assign the damage perfectly to abuse the crap out of the triggers and then dump the rest of the damage on your indestructible commander who grows to immense size on taking damage and probably has trample. People can't block or they lose and if they don't block, they lose. Plus you get to explain banding to everyone and watch them freak out about how broken it is, but you lose to spell slinger decks immediately. It's a good time.
One deck I had was Verdeloth. I filled it with mana dorks, put in a doubling cube, horizon stone, and a good amount of land searches. It performed very well without any token doublers like doubling season. Besides that put in some tribal synergies then make an army of saprolings in one turn
I play a Brion stoutarm deck that while isn’t the strongest is pretty fun to run. ⚪️/🔴 The deck features elementals and cards that have a high damage stat and a low cost. I use buff spells when I’m ready to deal damage and use stoutarm to throw big elementals like nova chaser and war elemental for insane direct damage and lifegain. For removal I’m a little cheeky sometimes. Sure a swords to plowshares will take care of that massive 16/16 creature my opponent’s snowballed but it’s oh so juicy to use something like treasonous act or awaken the sleeper to steal that big monster and throw it at their owner!
I saw Taniwha and I'm hooked. I've been trying to make that deck actually function for so long, i was considering getting the REAL Land Equilibrium for it. I love that card for being so extremely unique and unabashedly brutal in the levels of stax it plays. If you have any tips for building PLEASE share. Anything to make it run a little smoother without just juicing on fast mana and blue staples
I’m not quite sure on that. I would however add all of the artifact Stax pieces. Then make sure you have Urza and a consistent way to grab him from the deck.
Been going through this phase of EDH myself recently. So nice to see videos like this. Just put the finishing touches on a treasure/artifact mono black King Macar deck. I shelved my Sheoldred, the Apocalypse deck in favor of this dorky old dude to lock the game down.
The shock I was in for when someone told me my "unique and under the radar commander" was actually a cedh commander and unbelievably over played. I thought I stumbled upon unknown greatness when I built a Yuriko deck. I legitimately had no idea she was as good and as common as she is until I looked it up. I only found out about her initially when I built a Satoru Umezawa deck when Neon Dynasty first released.
My favorite deck is my mono white Abdel+Far Traveler pairing. It's a blink deck where I play tons of low mana artifacts and creatures early on to draw cards, gain life or make treasure tokens. I love Abdel because it "protects" my board by exiling it under itself and if they ever want to get rid of him, I get so much value off it. He also makes blockers for days, but what I love the most is his combo potential. I have a lot of "Fiend Hunter" cards that can exile a creature until it leaves the battlefield and if you have 3 of them, you can create a loop to have infinite ETBs and then I have plenty of ways of winning (infinite life with Soul Sisters cards, infinite damage by venturing in The Lost Mine of Pendelver or just infinite creatures with Abdel) It's really fun to play and the color restriction made for a really fun and budget brew
i see your mono red khamal and raise you mono green khamal, fist of krosa land destruction by turning your opponents lands into creatures and then fighting them
I’m building a Hylda deck that does the tap thing but doing everything I can to keep it winter themed. Snow lands, snow creatures, and other cards that are icy in theme.
My favorite underrated commander is Seizan, Perverter of Truth. Sure, there’s “pain on draw” cards like Underworld Dreams. However, I built this as much more “perverting truth”, with cards that make normal game actions hurt. Like Hissing Miasma and Revenge of Ravens to hurt players to attack me. Nightshade Harvester hurts them a little on landfall and makes a big creature. Hellish Rebuke and Sudden Spoiling negate an opponent’s damaging attack against me. Vampiric Link gives *me* life link from an opponent’s voltron commander. Plague Drone, Tainted Remedy, and False Cure turn their life gain into life drain. Avarice Totem - I have your thing! Infernal Darkness - lands are now swamps - every one! I love this commander and this deck.
My fav deck is my Goldberry, River-Daughter deck. I loaded it up with a ton of charge counter Artifacts, Sagas, and as many weird and unique counters as I could find in blue, and she is an absolute demon when she gets going.
yeah one of my fave parts of this hobby is deck building. ive only been doing mtg for about a year and a half but now im building infinite aurliea while playing my modified zhulodok and own built sigarda, font of blessings
I re-sparked my passion for avid deckbuilding by doing two things: 1. Make decks using cards ONLY from MY OWN collection. This will lead you to finding cards that never see the light of day, but in the world of commander, I genuinely believe anything can be playable. Very fun to bust out stuff you dont see every day, but it still holds up pretty well 2. Build "what if" ideas. I'm talking like baffling "what if" ideas. Two noteable ones I've done: An Esika + Umori companion deck where I run all creatures, amonst them being EVERY legndary "partner with" creature. A Yennet deck where I run Grozoth alongside like 25, 9-cmc cards, and my only non-odd cmc card in the deck is Omniscience. A bit more goofy, but pretty fun.
That green deck looking nice I just brewed a deck similar to it only esper colors with dakkon black blade and artifact synergies like blackblade and cranial plating
I love playing zombies since it was the deck that got me into magic to begin with. However after the Wilhelt precon released and I sat in a game against someone playing about 80% of my (non-wilhelt) deck, I took out all of the popular zombies and replaced them with really old and unique zombies that might seem jank at first. But honestly the uniqueness of it makes the deck so much more fun to play. Uniqueness is a very important factor in enjoying your own deck and I think everyone should have at least one deck that is different from everything and everyone else. Building a deck without edhrec (or using it to know what Not to include) can actually lead to some really great decks.
i made a Vrestin deck. selesnya insect tribal. its awesome. 2 green 1 white and an X. enters with X +1/+1 counters and X 1/1 flying alien insect tokens. and every time an insect attacks put a +1/+1 counter on all that do
@@LVMTG I know most white cards known to existence since I'm the mono white player in every group. I had a Nadaar deck which was very good for precon and updated precon levels since the commander had a value ETB+attack ability, and vigilance, so it had a lot of presence. I just had to protect him. I highly recommend you to try him out some day.
@@LVMTG OH and also try out Fortune, Loyal Steed. There are a lot of creatures that give you multiple tokens on ETB (specially artifact creatures, you'll see why), and having as main wincon Halo Fountain with some artifact flash enablers feels so funny to me. A blink deck that uses tokens as a wincon without combat, and combat as a value engine lmao.
I want to point out lots of people run powerful commanders because they work with cheap cards. Making janky commanders work is cool but often requires a higher budget.
When I first started Commander back in the day I built two decks that I haven’t seen anyone else play since. I built a Daxos of Meletis aura voltron deck and a Scion of Ur Dragon dragon reanimator.
As much as I love Frank, and I have a friend at my LGS that plays basically only a Frank deck and it's a counter deck, while if it pops off it can be a big threat Frank is realistically coming down after you've got your major cards out to take advantage of counters or your infinite anyway. Sure proliferation is nice but you've already got a win on your field. I find he's great with Superfriends myself, usually in the 99 of Carth the Lion but he can work as a commander. Being a chunky blocker who proliferates at just over the cost of some of your best planeswalkers is really powerful to allow an ultimate out of nowhere.
I've built Othari as Christmas present last year for my fiancé he loves it it is sooo terrifying when he gets his buff effects or etb damage with impact tremors. my most unusual deck is a mono blue voltron deck built around devotion with callephe beloved by the sea
If you think Boros is underpowered and unfun, but you like tokens, I dare you to try out General Ferrous Rokiric. Make the whole deck multicolored and swarm with 4/4 artifact golems. Same kinda strategy as the Phoenix, but gets online a bit earlier and is super salt inducing. Its my personal favorite commander, and I love seeing people panic as my board grows just for playing any spell
@LVMTG best part is, a lot of your cards from the Phoenix deck translate really well for Rokiric. Also, since his tokens are artifacts you can lean into artifact synergies as well.
I haven’t played the actual TCG in years, but I’m an on and off arenas player, and I have a brawl deck that uses esika as a commander, but the deck isn’t full of creatures and plainswalkers like a lot of esika decks are, I only have squee the immortal. Everything else is basically just board wipes, card draw/recycling my graveyard back into the library, equipment to make squee big with lifelink, trample, hexproof etc, and lots of other things to try and set up. Lithoform engine to copy things, sunbirds innvocation to cast spells for free, lots of artifacts for ramp and disabling enemy creatures and planswalkers, it’s definitely a super jank meme deck, but it’s so much fun when i get the opportunity to get everything fully set up. I really wanna build it into a real deck and find some friends to play it with, but I don’t know how it will play against other decks because arenas has a really bad habit of putting you up against certain types of decks based on what your playing. But I think it could be fun if it’s all legal and with probably some tweaks to make it a bit more consistent
I love my monoblack Sauron deck, one of my favorite decks I have that aren't combo deck. Have also won multiple games without ever playing him from the command zone
@@LVMTG Reanimator somewhat. ALOT of The usual fun black removal and board control as well as abusing the 9 Nazguls, ring tempt triggers. If the graveyards don't get shut down it can be very hard to deal with the recursion.
I made a Burakos // Haunted One deck. Its a mono black Tapp deck all arround abusing the Undying trigger of my commander and going absolutely crazy. I killed the table with Underealm lich and constantly reanimating Gary from the grave with Body Launderer because its a rogue. This is my favorite deck of all time, even made a video on my channel about it. Its a masterpiece and it's mine.
Consider on your mono r deck switch to Solphim. I built one and we share very similar pieces, my group is calls pain stax. I try to dish out damage on every opponent's game action. And speed the game with x spells that damage players and clear the board. Anyways. Loved the ideas that you brew.
I have a Grumgully Superfriends Deck that is really a gruul proliferate theme. Its crazy how big creatures and planeswalkers really make superfriends that much more viable.
@@LVMTG things like Dawnglade Regent, Skyline Despot and Herd Baloth are really great! First two give monarch and also double as big stats which makes opponents choose between hitting planeswalkers or taking monarch away And herd baloth and proliferate also generates a lot of strong blockers! And grumgully makes sure they enter with counters so they can only grow!
I built Toggo and Kodama of the East Tree recently...I filled it with creatures that get big based on land count, and fling effects. Also, Reckless Crew is hilarious with Toggo. Make rocks, throw rocks.
My current deck I have in the oven is an eleventh doctor and Amy pond deck where I make one of them unblockable with the doctor, then buff them to high heaven with spells or permanents that only buff until end of turn to get free big stuff or command damage wins. It'll probably be a bit slow and definitely alot of work to get working how i want, but that's kinda how all janky commanders work.
I run 25 Commander decks but my favorite deck is auntie blyte, it’s unique and makes the game fast. Also punching myself in the face as hard as I can just gets fun reactions from any table. “I’m gona lightning bolt my face.”
@@LVMTG he does so much for one card, token gen, card draw, and direct damage. Added enchantments and creatures that deal direct damage when created enter and leave the battlefield
My favourite commader(s) is Jacob and Evie Frye (yes I know ub bad) but I love the synergy between them drawing and discarding an assassin with Evie to make Jacob unblockable then can attack to copy some assassins. It's not the best or meta but it is fun.
I've got a Frank deck myself! Only I don't run +1 counters, I instead run hard proliferation with Radiation counters! The damage adds up super fast, and often has players milling out their best stuff too.
I made a Jodah, Dragonspeaker. No generic legends goodstuff. Nope, Jodah is channeling his inner Sarkhan and it's a bunch of legendary dragons! I actually built Otharri, but made it Rebel tribal. Bunch of Rebels in case my tokens get dealt with. Otharri lives in the graveyard constantly on purpose because most of my creatures are freaking Rebels! Other fun commanders I've made...Rigo Streetwqise Mentor, Kemba Kha Enduring, Imskir Iron-Eater, Sophia Dogged Detective, Danny Pink, Nashi Moon Sage's Scion, Trelessara. To name a few. Great vid!
I had a really sick win last night with karona false god as commander. I had timesifter out and played karona against the last player of our game of 4 people. My cards are in average 5 or more mana so timesifter basically gave me turns infinitely and thus karona got to stay in my control and beat them to a pulp. Was a combo I didn't even realize was as good as it was.
@@LVMTG my deck is completely chaotic and more so made to create absurd board states than wins and synergize with my commander. I just happened to get karona to work super well with timesifter and magister of worth. I have won another time from just screwing the boardstate so bad nobodies deck worked like it was intended to and I won off coin flips. I don't think RUclips let's me post moxfield links but it's The Plot Twist if you're curious of the deck
All Im saying, there's dozens of commanders from all the commander sets that see little to no play. Cards designed for commander that are solemnly played outside of drafts
So, my most popular is Morophon. However, the tribe is trolls. Using cards like trinisphere to make sure my opponent's are paying for their cards. The troll toll. It's unfinished because I need a Rhystic Study and Smothering Tythe but I don't need them to play the deck. My least popular, I just built and have played only once so far, and somehow it's my favorite deck right now. The Master, Formed Anew. A ETB Dimir flicker deck that has me exiling my creatures so The Master can jump in as them. My build needs work but it's a lot of fun. A few commanders I have that's in-between in order from my favorites to least - Anim Pakal, Ratonhnhaké:ton, Minsc, Beloved Ranger, Slimefoot and Squee (played when I want a win).
in the Otharri deck you can run the background which gives token +2/+2 if you have yo commander in play, it's better in a partner deck but still +2/+2 for 3 mana is crazy stronk.
Im currently in the process of building a janky voltron child of alara deck, its been fun to experiment and play with. leads to a lot of people on the table not wanting to kill it and suffer the nuke
One of my favorite underated commanders is Maraxxus of keld is voltron but instead of just piling cards on him, you just make a crap ton of random artifacts tokens, he uses them as dumbells grows big and then you swing with a huge 30/30 maraxxus and if they try to stop you, just use some of those random treasures to interact.
Oh, I love wacky decks that surprise the enemy! Black: Geth, Lord of the Vault -> I've all infinite mana pieces, but I only run the most unused on the deck, to combo I need to steal the lacking pieces from my opponent. It's fun to thank my enemies for my win! Also, Amulet of vigor + Krark-Clan Ironworks and a mana filter kills an enemy. Imagine to die to ur own Sol Ring? Green: Jolrael, Empress of Beasts -> The deck is basically mana, protection and a Throne of the God-Pharaoh
I love Molimo, but since Lumra came out with Bloomburrow, Molimo is just purely power crept imo. Trample sources are already abundant in my deck, so having Reach and Vigilance on top of Trample with a one less mana cost and an even stronger effect just seems like a no brainer. I did however, keep Molimo in my deck as a creature.
@@LVMTG Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis. He helps you ramp and draw into big spells and also helps your opponents develop. And after the opponent has put their biggest and best creatures into play with things like Braids, you scrambleverse or Thieves auction and steal there stuff.
Something tells me you'd like Rielle the Everwise. Unique draw mechanic for Izzet (discarding yields draw) and she has a built in Voltron ability to make her deadly at the drop of a pin.
I don't use any list for... Anything, really. My first 4 commander decks were guildkits that I turned into commander decks. My favorite one is my Orznov token deck, which isn't quite done yet, but hey, the slow evolution is fun!
Take it a step further and build unloved commanders on a budget! Using your same logic for why you don't want to use/see the expensive and repetitive commanders, you also shouldn't want to see all the expensive and repetitive staples like eldrazi and necropotence! I started building $25 decks about a year ago, and now that's all I build! You should give it a try, you'd be surprised just how powerful you can build a deck to be on a $25 budget! I currently own 9 $25 decks (3 more being brewed at the moment), let me know if you'd like to see any of the deck lists!
Here’s an easy way to make any deck more unique: use companions. Honestly they give you some advantage for building around their restrictions like umori making it only one type
Otharri seems like a decent enough commander(for this power scale). It's a little soft for its mana cost but its the type of effect that snowballs pretty hard, and you can run other cards that boost your tokens and experience counters easily enough. Maybe not as much as some other commanders, but there seems room for pain in each game. I would say your not likely to win any politics when your running it due to the potential for escalation but that's every aggro decks bane in EDH.
I want to make a Kamahl deck at some point. Mono red is just so much fun and so diverse. I have 8 mono red decks all with completely different strategies. The only cards I have in all of them are Chaos Warp and Blas Act. I think they are just too essential since mono red is already by far the weakest colour in EDH.
I've created my favorite mono black deck using King Macar the gold cursed. Sure he's poopy. But you run it mono black devotion with shrine to nyx and cabal coffers with the tutors and play around with staff of domination with your surplus of mana you have a fun time being a one man boardwipe every turn.
Ive got a Belbe, Corruted Observer deck. On one hand, people cant really tell me my deck is unoriginal. But on the other, a consistent turn 3 Ulamog isnt much fun for my opponents. So I bring it out only once a night to crush one game and then i go to something more tame
Kenrith is a popular commander who is super fun but usually built boring. A big reason why they can be boring is just most tribal commanders are very limited in scope
LOL I got a Kamahl fist of Krosa deck: classic mono green mana dork tribal and overrun! I'd like to suggest The Rani, 786 decks on EDHREC. The card seems very unassuming at first but Grixis goad is crazy fun at creating chaos and the innocuous clues add up allowing for the secret wincon: Cyberdrive Awakener/ Rise and Shine (Overloaded) to be unleashed on the weary survivors :P
I’m quite fond of errant and giada flash tribal, idk how popular that commander is but it’s a really funny deck that’s basically all interaction, even the creatures
@@LVMTG pretty simple honestly, Agatha is a 2 drop so you just need some way to start getting counters on her. The MVP of the deck is forgotten ancient or hero’s blade.
@@LVMTG Yup! And since most of your Thallids want you to sac. your saps, I use aristrocrat payoffs (Midnight Reaper, Grave Pact, Utopia Mycon, Xavier Sal, etc.) as well as for the wincon (like Bastion of Remembrance, Blood Artist, etc.) rather than focusing on combat.
Brutha I hear you, and understand the pain. Have already been there and been doin that, I pull up to the function with a mono-red clone deck helmed by Dong Zhou. Gotta say, am going to be extremely dissappointed if Duskmorne fails to drop some new shades for my Ihsan's deck tho.
Lol I gifted my nephew my Volrath deck. It slaps. It's hilarious cause even at a budget it knocks people out. It makes you archenemy of the table but whatever you're always swinging for lethal in everyone's mind.
Most of my commander decks are obscure commanders with maybe 5 or 6 being edhrec ones. I have about 30+ decks and most of them are pretty unique or are commanders that i kept upgrading or changing from precons.
I recommend you try out jolreal, empress of beast she is a mono green commander that has tap discard 2 all lands target player controls are 2/2's. I built her last month and she is my favorite i dare you creatures out there. I built mine as a go tall heavy ramp deck that is heavy on untap and protection effects where i try to bait out board wipes then make my opponents pop there own lands. The most legendary play I've had with it so far was hitting one guy for 48 commander then untapping my commander to animate all of this other guy's lands when he cast farewell
Hot take. People are bored with commander because they're putting in every tutor they can and never have to think about how they can win. If every game is mull until I have tutors or a way to get my tutors then you'll be bored of the play pattern in a matter of weeks.
That’s definitely. I do run tutors in a few decks but most times I just want variance in my games.
Waaiit...am I the only one that sees 1-2 lands with a ramp and goes I have 2 turns to draw another land, this is fine.
Please. Stop. I already have too many brews and not enough money 😅
I have that problem as well. At one point I had around 50 decks but I have condensed down to about 20-25. However the underrated commander train will never stop.
Steal the money!
@@mattialinari9310 🤣🤣🤣
Proxy!
I try to silence the urge by just making those decks on Moxfield and then not really buying them, or not most of them (currently like 42 in "ideas" folder)
Precons and edhrec has really flattened the LGS commander experience. I'm lucky to be in a meta of creative brewers.
That’s awesome. I just play with whoever at my LGS
I love these videos of underrated commanders and Im sure many others do aswell. Please do more!!
I didn’t think it would turn out to be such a popular topic. Sounds like I need to get to work on another script.
I ran a Volrath, The Fallen deck for many years and loved it.
Your playgroup will catch on to getting domed pretty quickly after a few times and will make it tougher for you.
Despite that, it's a great time and a good romp.
I recommend it!
Yeah that’s the only bad thing. Once they catch on it’s over
I made a Jodah deck, but instead of trying to make it powerful, which it happened to become, I just made a Theros God tribal because it was my favorite plane. I added every Theros god, and their equipment like spear of Heliod etc.
That’s the kind of flavor I can get behind.
One of my friends plays an Otharri deck religiously, and that shit goes off insanely fast if you don't have an answer to it immediately. It looks like a lot of fun to play, but it's rough to play against if you're running a slower deck.
I’ve noticed that as well in my experience. If you can’t consistently remove Otharri before it attacks, the rebel train will run out of control.
Based off of these picks, i can tell you as a player like having really big creature or alot of tokens. Certified timmy style 😂
I love playing my big monster decks over my combo decks any day of the week.
My favorite deck I've built is Eriette of the charmed apple. I did it myself without edhrec because I don't like not having my own ideas. I'm so proud of how strong the deck is and it shuts down a lot of popular netdeck commanders.
That is the best feeling. Shutting down an EDHREC build. Love it.
I also have an Eriette deck, it's so fun!
What a rank he has. I have Neyith of the Dire Hunt for my fight deck. I might have to change it to mono green now.
My most unique commander is Xantcha, Sleeper Agent. It's a group slug deck that used goad, background, curses, and other stuff to sow chaos.
Everytime I hear Xantcha. I think of Fanta soda.
I have a slogurk and really want to brew with it.
I like running Gimli, Mournful Avenger as an aristocrats/voltron deck. It's shocking how many sac outlets you have access to in Gruul. Throw in some token spam like Krenko and scute swarm, and you'll have a huge, indestructible commander to swing with.
That’s spicy
Sometimes flavor is better than function. Love that deck name.
I love Ovika, Genesis engine. One of the fastest lethal decks ever with cards like surge to victory and shared animosity. At a low budget it’s my most aggressive deck
City on fire, goblin bombardment, Witty roastmaster, all that goes crazy
With devilish valet I’ve literally dealt tens of thousands of damage
I have an Ovika in my binder and maybe I should give it a build. Hmmm
Awesome video! I‘ve been looking into building a Volrath deck and this video sold me on him 👍☺️
It’s a fun build. I hope you enjoy it.
love it! I used to build hella strong decks but now I love to build jank decks with commanders no one knows about. Im glad im not alone :)
Same. I used to build the most popular of the popular but now I love the unloved commanders. Who is your favorite jank commander?
Banding how I’ve missed this mechanic
One deck I had was Verdeloth. I filled it with mana dorks, put in a doubling cube, horizon stone, and a good amount of land searches. It performed very well without any token doublers like doubling season. Besides that put in some tribal synergies then make an army of saprolings in one turn
Verdeloth is an OG Commander.
I play a Brion stoutarm deck that while isn’t the strongest is pretty fun to run.
⚪️/🔴
The deck features elementals and cards that have a high damage stat and a low cost.
I have a theft and sacrifice deck as well. It’s just rakdos though.
I’ve seen King Macar mentioned a lot and I’m intrigued now.
Well you can make a popular commander in an unpopular way.
That is a very unique commander
i see your mono red khamal and raise you mono green khamal, fist of krosa land destruction by turning your opponents lands into creatures and then fighting them
I like it. Ezuris predation is some brutal tech in a build like that I’m sure.
I saw Kamahl, Pit Fighter in the thumbnail and that was all it took.
I’m glad there is another Kamahl fan out there
Wow! its fresh and inspiring! Thanks!
I’m glad you enjoyed it
nice content! I like to build decks with innovative ideas, just to ran away from the obvious choices of commanders and/or cards.
Thanks. I appreciate it.
I love my Tayam deck. It may not be the fastest, but it comes back from a boardwipe almost immediately. I've never seen anyone else running Tayam.
I’ve never seen it either. Interesting.
I’m building a Hylda deck that does the tap thing but doing everything I can to keep it winter themed. Snow lands, snow creatures, and other cards that are icy in theme.
That’s the kind of flavor I can get behind
Sek Kuar is underrated fun! This video made me think about rebuilding mine. Thanks for the fun video and ideas.
That was actually my first EDH deck. I built it when I was young and before the term commander was ever coined. Maybe I should rebuild mine as well
I built sek kuar as a skeleton tribal and it's pretty fun
I went to a shop with a Kamiz, Obscura Oculus deck last friday. They told me it was "exotic". A encouraging environent to bring different brews.
I never seen anyone play Kamiz and I own the precon.
Seizan is a beast
My fav deck is my Goldberry, River-Daughter deck. I loaded it up with a ton of charge counter Artifacts, Sagas, and as many weird and unique counters as I could find in blue, and she is an absolute demon when she gets going.
Ohhh. That’s sounds super unique.
yeah one of my fave parts of this hobby is deck building. ive only been doing mtg for about a year and a half but now im building infinite aurliea while playing my modified zhulodok and own built sigarda, font of blessings
Deck building is the best part of MTG
@@LVMTG I absolutely agree
I re-sparked my passion for avid deckbuilding by doing two things:
1. Make decks using cards ONLY from MY OWN collection. This will lead you to finding cards that never see the light of day, but in the world of commander, I genuinely believe anything can be playable. Very fun to bust out stuff you dont see every day, but it still holds up pretty well
I usually use cards from my collection and typically never buy singles for certain decks. I feel that’s how a deck can remain unique.
That green deck looking nice I just brewed a deck similar to it only esper colors with dakkon black blade and artifact synergies like blackblade and cranial plating
Esper lands seems super cool
EDHREC is a great guide but it can take over the deck building process a little too much for me.
surprisingly the top 5 you showed at 0:27 I have 0 decks made for.
That’s awesome
i made a Vrestin deck. selesnya insect tribal. its awesome. 2 green 1 white and an X. enters with X +1/+1 counters and X 1/1 flying alien insect tokens. and every time an insect attacks put a +1/+1 counter on all that do
Now that’s the spice I can get behind.
There's a white kamigawa legend with flash that lets you block with your tapped creatures. Always a pleasure to run it in Otharri :)
I didn’t know that card existed until an Archimandrite player slammed it and blew me out before. That was an eye opener.
I’ve noticed that as well. I might do a list of strong commanders with jank cards.
I do love the concept of that video. Even love this one. I just wish I put that kind of money into this game xD.
I recognized Otharri as one I had.
Turns out I have a foil copy of that card, meaning I should definitely build that commander.
Yes you should.
When I first started Commander back in the day I built two decks that I haven’t seen anyone else play since. I built a Daxos of Meletis aura voltron deck and a Scion of Ur Dragon dragon reanimator.
Dragon Reanimator is a fun one. Rivas helms mine.
I’m still debating on adding Planeswalkers to Frank myself.
I've built Othari as Christmas present last year for my fiancé he loves it it is sooo terrifying when he gets his buff effects or etb damage with impact tremors. my most unusual deck is a mono blue voltron deck built around devotion with callephe beloved by the sea
It sounds like the gift that keeps on giving.
idk why but zinnia has been an eye opener, its so flexable
That offspring ability goes nuts
If you think Boros is underpowered and unfun, but you like tokens, I dare you to try out General Ferrous Rokiric. Make the whole deck multicolored and swarm with 4/4 artifact golems. Same kinda strategy as the Phoenix, but gets online a bit earlier and is super salt inducing. Its my personal favorite commander, and I love seeing people panic as my board grows just for playing any spell
Challenged accepted. I’ve always liked that card.
The best bet is to build it and go to an LGS and let the pod know it is a weaker deck. That way everyone plays similar power levels
@@LVMTGappreciate you man 🙌🏼 keep up the good work on the vids
I love my monoblack Sauron deck, one of my favorite decks I have that aren't combo deck. Have also won multiple games without ever playing him from the command zone
I’ve always wanted to build Sauron, The Necromancer. What’s the theme?
Sounds like I need to check it out.
Consider on your mono r deck switch to Solphim. I built one and we share very similar pieces, my group is calls pain stax. I try to dish out damage on every opponent's game action. And speed the game with x spells that damage players and clear the board.
Anyways. Loved the ideas that you brew.
I just have a soft spot for Kamahl. I know there are better commanders but Kamahl is my guy.
3:23 there’s a card similar to him in multani, yavimaya’s elder.
Multani is the superior card but I’m a sucker for old borders.
I have a Grumgully Superfriends Deck that is really a gruul proliferate theme.
Its crazy how big creatures and planeswalkers really make superfriends that much more viable.
Which big creatures are your running in Gruul?
@@LVMTG things like Dawnglade Regent, Skyline Despot and Herd Baloth are really great!
First two give monarch and also double as big stats which makes opponents choose between hitting planeswalkers or taking monarch away
And herd baloth and proliferate also generates a lot of strong blockers!
And grumgully makes sure they enter with counters so they can only grow!
I built Toggo and Kodama of the East Tree recently...I filled it with creatures that get big based on land count, and fling effects. Also, Reckless Crew is hilarious with Toggo. Make rocks, throw rocks.
How I have never seen Reckless Crew before. It looks like so much fun.
The jank shall inherit the play group
I run 25 Commander decks but my favorite deck is auntie blyte, it’s unique and makes the game fast. Also punching myself in the face as hard as I can just gets fun reactions from any table. “I’m gona lightning bolt my face.”
That sounds like such a fun build.
Iv been playing Ceaser, idk if he’s popular or not but it’s been super super fun and I think it’s my favorite project
It does look like a cool token commander
@@LVMTG he does so much for one card, token gen, card draw, and direct damage. Added enchantments and creatures that deal direct damage when created enter and leave the battlefield
My favourite commader(s) is Jacob and Evie Frye (yes I know ub bad) but I love the synergy between them drawing and discarding an assassin with Evie to make Jacob unblockable then can attack to copy some assassins. It's not the best or meta but it is fun.
Fun is all that matters
I've got a Frank deck myself! Only I don't run +1 counters, I instead run hard proliferation with Radiation counters! The damage adds up super fast, and often has players milling out their best stuff too.
I think Frank is one of the best proliferation commanders but he is seriously slept on
@@LVMTG not only that, but he's cool as hell from the source material, which is a huge bonus!
Great vid!
I like the way you brew.
@@LVMTG Honored. Thank you very much!
What kindred strategy do you use for your Karona?
@@LVMTG my deck is completely chaotic and more so made to create absurd board states than wins and synergize with my commander. I just happened to get karona to work super well with timesifter and magister of worth. I have won another time from just screwing the boardstate so bad nobodies deck worked like it was intended to and I won off coin flips.
I don't think RUclips let's me post moxfield links but it's The Plot Twist if you're curious of the deck
All Im saying, there's dozens of commanders from all the commander sets that see little to no play. Cards designed for commander that are solemnly played outside of drafts
Yeah those do need some love as well
So, my most popular is Morophon.
That troll toll deck sounds wild
in the Otharri deck you can run the background which gives token +2/+2 if you have yo commander in play, it's better in a partner deck but still +2/+2 for 3 mana is crazy stronk.
That’s is some good tech.
Im currently in the process of building a janky voltron child of alara deck, its been fun to experiment and play with. leads to a lot of people on the table not wanting to kill it and suffer the nuke
Child of Alara is brutal to play against. I love it.
That’s my kind of deck. An unknown commander from an older set that can one shot out of nowhere.
Maraxxus AKA Bane of MTG ;p
Oh, I love wacky decks that surprise the enemy!
Black: Geth, Lord of the Vault -> I've all infinite mana pieces, but I only run the most unused on the deck, to combo I need to steal the lacking pieces from my opponent. It's fun to thank my enemies for my win! Also, Amulet of vigor + Krark-Clan Ironworks and a mana filter kills an enemy. Imagine to die to ur own Sol Ring?
Green: Jolrael, Empress of Beasts -> The deck is basically mana, protection and a Throne of the God-Pharaoh
I’ve always wanted to make Throne of the God Pharaoh work.
Lumra, Multani and Greensleeves are definitely better. I just love my old bordered jank commander.
I made a really fun deck with the 4 colour group hug commander, but instead of grouphug you just give people headaches with some crazy cards.
Who’s the commander?
@@LVMTG Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis. He helps you ramp and draw into big spells and also helps your opponents develop. And after the opponent has put their biggest and best creatures into play with things like Braids, you scrambleverse or Thieves auction and steal there stuff.
But more fun cards just to play around if you want to I can share the decklist :)?
Something tells me you'd like Rielle the Everwise. Unique draw mechanic for Izzet (discarding yields draw) and she has a built in Voltron ability to make her deadly at the drop of a pin.
I did spot her in my binder the other day. Maybe it’s time to retire the locust god.
@@LVMTG Key to the City, Artful Dodge, and Temur Battle Rage are all must includes for me.
I don't use any list for... Anything, really. My first 4 commander decks were guildkits that I turned into commander decks. My favorite one is my Orznov token deck, which isn't quite done yet, but hey, the slow evolution is fun!
Who’s the commander for your Orzhov build?
@@LVMTG Teysa Karlov. The one that doubles death triggers and gives tokens vigilance and lifelink
I’m definitely into budget decks as well. I have a series of $5 dollar decktechs on the channel. Check them out
Here’s an easy way to make any deck more unique: use companions. Honestly they give you some advantage for building around their restrictions like umori making it only one type
Yes companions are great way to make a popular commander more unique.
Or treat your Commander like they're adhering to the Companion requirement. Obosh was super fun to build this way.
Yeah that’s the biggest downside of aggro besides everyone starting with 40 life
Try Noyan Dar. Crazy land creature deck! And it’s pretty strong with some unique land creatures
Oooohhh that’s some spice right there.
That’s wild. I only have the one and it’s definitely my baby.
I've created my favorite mono black deck using King Macar the gold cursed. Sure he's poopy. But you run it mono black devotion with shrine to nyx and cabal coffers with the tutors and play around with staff of domination with your surplus of mana you have a fun time being a one man boardwipe every turn.
That’s the spirit. Power up the jank with staples.
Ive got a Belbe, Corruted Observer deck. On one hand, people cant really tell me my deck is unoriginal. But on the other, a consistent turn 3 Ulamog isnt much fun for my opponents. So I bring it out only once a night to crush one game and then i go to something more tame
Belbe does seem like a lot of fun.
Kenrith is a popular commander who is super fun but usually built boring. A big reason why they can be boring is just most tribal commanders are very limited in scope
I built Kenrith as 5 color Dinos.
John Hammond is who he represents, because the deck is Jurassic Park themed, and I
"Spared no expense" 😂
I actually have video that I just recorded on a Manaless Kenrith Deck. Just have to finish editing it.
@@LVMTG Sounds neat. Can't wait
The Rani seems interesting.
@@LVMTGshe is a very strong commander though
I’m quite fond of errant and giada flash tribal, idk how popular that commander is but it’s a really funny deck that’s basically all interaction, even the creatures
I see your a fan of playing on everyone’s end step
@@LVMTG and during their first main, combat and second main if I can manage
My favorite underrated commander is Agatha, of the Vile Cauldron. Activated ability tribal!
I really wanted to build this one. How is it to pilot?
@@LVMTG pretty simple honestly, Agatha is a 2 drop so you just need some way to start getting counters on her. The MVP of the deck is forgotten ancient or hero’s blade.
As an Ishi Ishi enjoyer, I fully support this message
What a wild commander
From the most popular, I do run Atraxa. To be fair though, mine is Saproling tribal. Most of my other commanders are pretty obscure.
I never realized how good Atraxa is with Spore counters until right now.
@@LVMTG By the way, I love your channel! I can not wait to dig into more of your content. Definitely subscribed.
I appreciate it. Thanks for the support
For your Golgari counters deck you should consider Corpsejack Menace.
It is definitely a powerhouse
I've built Shirei exactly because I want something fresh. Recurrent sack fodder with a mono black demon focus.
Nothing like recurring jank over and over and over.
My current favorite deck that I play is Quintorius, Loremaster. Its a token generating impact tremors deck/tool box.
Boros graveyard seems pretty sweet.
Another thing you could do is make your friends build a pauper.. nice change of pace when games are getting contentious
I wouldn’t mind getting into Pauper EDH. Might have to start working on a build.
It’s a real shame. I didn’t even see any shades in the card image gallery
@@LVMTG absolutely my dissappointment, just waiting with bated breath that they happen to do it.
No decklist? I'd love to see them.

More of these videos! I love it
I’m working on another 5 unique commanders script right now. So be ready.
@lvmtg nice!!!
My main deck is Durnan of the Yawning Portal // Tavern Brawler, which i believe is Rank #2740 (last time i checked)
What a low rank. I love it.
I recently started building w/e i wanted and the last 2 decks I made were abuelo ancestral echo and jori en ruin diver
I really like Jori. He performs well in any Izzet deck.
Lol I gifted my nephew my Volrath deck. It slaps. It's hilarious cause even at a budget it knocks people out. It makes you archenemy of the table but whatever you're always swinging for lethal in everyone's mind.
Volrath is absolutely underestimated. If you power him out early, the opponents without blockers are toast
Most of my commander decks are obscure commanders with maybe 5 or 6 being edhrec ones. I have about 30+ decks and most of them are pretty unique or are commanders that i kept upgrading or changing from precons.
That’s the best way to build and play EDH
I recommend you try out jolreal, empress of beast she is a mono green commander that has tap discard 2 all lands target player controls are 2/2's. I built her last month and she is my favorite i dare you creatures out there. I built mine as a go tall heavy ramp deck that is heavy on untap and protection effects where i try to bait out board wipes then make my opponents pop there own lands. The most legendary play I've had with it so far was hitting one guy for 48 commander then untapping my commander to animate all of this other guy's lands when he cast farewell
I can only imagine the amount of salt that flowed that day.
@@LVMTG don't touch the stompy players board it's simple.
