The original notes were too long for a youtube comment, since as always I went off on a wild tangent at some point about something unrelated. What's below is the notes of everything that pertains to the content in the clip, if you want to read my ramblings about oolong tea, squids and the kanji 烏 that means "crow" that these 2 words share in Japanese see here: docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vSFazpmc3one0xH2rz9Kjm7Vdjo0uzpsn8_gEPcwlK8TXrhSLdBOwPddWL3OIes5JmmaDe2OAiF2lTJ/pub TL Notes: If I was a better video editor I could have made this a lot better. I really wanted to put some zawa zawa sound effects from the Kaiji anime but I couldn’t get them to work well. That and zooming in for facial reactions and stuff could have made it a lot funnier. With that being said the main reason I make these videos is to practice my Japanese and spending a load of time doing video editing takes time away from that. The black box of text on the left says 会話のアドバイス(kaiwa no adobaisu) which means “conversation advice”. The first 4 points were advice from Okayu, the last 2 are from Mio. The first point is 困ったらペンを落とす(komattara pen o otosu) which means, “If you’re in trouble, drop your pen”. That’s why Korone drops her pen and then her marker pen at a couple of points (I guess she didn’t pick her pen up again the first time she dropped it). At the start the reason she asks about the chick on Rushia’s head is because of Mio’s final piece of advice 困ったら写真を見て髪についてるものについて聞く(komattara shashin o mite kami ni tsuiteru mono ni tsuite kiku) which means, “If you’re in trouble, look at a picture of them and ask them about something sticking out of their hair”. The reason Korone’s kind of being so “proactive” throughout is because of Mio’s other piece of advice 間があきそうになったらネェネェネェ(aida ga akisou ni nattara nee nee nee) which means, “If it looks like there’s an opening say something like hey hey hey.” That’s why she’s saying a lot of stuff like “Hey Ru-chan listen to me” etc. 2:28 This is another point on Korone’s advice list. The 4th one from the top says 困ったら天気の話 (komattara tenki no hanashi), “if you’re in trouble talk about the weather”. It’s also just a pretty common thing to do if you can’t think of something to say as well. The other 2 points are 元気よくリズミカルに (genki yoku rizumirakru ni), “Talk cheerfully and rhythmically”. And おかゆの話NG (okayu no hanashi NG), “Don’t talk about Okayu”. So Korone uses all the pieces of advice she was given to use when she was in trouble here, sasuga Nekomancer (I think she used them all for pretty much everyone though to be fair). The Japanese word for pressure is 圧(atsu), you’ll see this spammed in the chat all the time when someone is “putting someone else under pressure”. Korone even has a custom emote for it since she does it so much (you can see it a bunch in the chat in the top left throughout this it's the yellow and red emote). 1:22 Korone says 45 seconds here, I missed the 5 off when I subbed it originally. I realized later when editing, but since it isn’t really consequential to anything I left it in as it was rather than going through a bunch of tedious work to fix it. Sorry. 1:56 Rushia uses the term 成仏(joubutsu) here. 成 means “to become” and 仏 means Buddha, so this means to “attain Buddhahood”. As well as referring to the Buddhist ideal of “attaining nirvana” in life, in Japanese Buddhism there’s a belief that one can sort of “return to the life of Buddha” after death by entering a peaceful world somewhat akin to the concept of heaven. Due to this 成仏 has become a commonly used term for “passing on to the next life” in everyday Japanese (regardless of if you believe in “Buddhahood” or not). Ghosts and wandering spirits and what not are said to “not be able to attain Buddhahood”, since they haven’t come to peace with their life on Earth due to some sort of lingering regret or grudge and thus they can’t enter the afterlife. So causing a ghost to pass on to the afterlife is called 成仏 as well, since you’re helping them “achieve Buddhahood”. I wanted to use the term “help it pass it on to the next life” rather than “exorcise”, but couldn’t because of space concerns. A lot of the time you will see 成仏 translated as “cleansing”, “purifying” or “exorcising” a spirit when it’s done forcefully. But it can also be a voluntary thing by the spirit. I’m sure if you’re watching this you’ve probably seen a scene in an anime or some other Japanese media where someone helps a ghost pass on to the next life and then they bid each other a tearful farewell as the spirit fades away. That’s also 成仏, but I wouldn’t really say it was “exorcising”. You’ll often find references to Buddhism or Shinto in everyday Japanese speech, similar to the way you might find references to Christianity in everyday English speech (saying things like “Jesus”, “OMG”, referencing concepts like “the devil” or “hell’ etc.). 2:43 some more info on the types of tea mentioned here, since my translations have to be concise so I’ve translated something like 玄米茶(genmaicha) to “roasted rice tea” which doesn’t tell the whole story: 焙じ茶 (houjicha), “Roasted green tea”: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C5%8Djicha 玄米茶 (genmaicha), “Roasted rice tea”: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genmaicha These 2 are more well known in the west so you might of heard of/tried them: 麦茶 (mugicha), Barley tea: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barley_tea 緑茶 (ryokucha), Green tea: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_tea 3:08 Korone uses the term 澄んでる(sunderu) here. Very broadly this can be translated as “clear” and it does mean this in a lot of contexts. What Korone is trying to describe here is the “water-like” quality of the color of green tea. I can’t really explain it well with words, if you bring up an image of green tea in a glass you’ll be able to see what I mean perhaps. Because it lets light through, but also has a green color it looks kind of “crystal clear” like water does in a glass with its kind of faint bluish tinge. There’s an English word “pellucid” that somewhat describes this, but I only found this word after trying to research an English word to describe the way Korone uses 澄んでる here. I didn’t know this word before this and I’ve read John Irving novels, so I decided not to use it and just went with the more general “clear”. 3:22 Korone says she’s dropped her マッキー(makkii), which comes from “McKie” a brand of marker pens. It’s kind of like a double ended sharpie: www.zebra.co.jp/pro/mackee/#tabs-a if you want a look. At the end Korone says this because Mio was on the stream earlier and said she’d give Korone a reward if she got over 60 points. At the start she was supposed to get a score out of 10 from 8 people, hence the 28/80 at the start and 128/80 at the end. There’s a link to the guy who made the Jojo gogogo green screen I used in the description, many thanks to him and I’m sorry I couldn’t be bothered to get rid of all the green properly.
I read all of that, even your doc on the "crow" kanji. I find it super fascinating, even if I'm not even learning the language. Thank you for putting all of it together!
Lol Korone busting out the timestamps on Rushia after exposing herself that she didn’t know the chick’s name... tbh I didn’t know the name either. Rushia adapts so well to who she’s talking to and rather than simply ‘has’, she ’creates’ fun chemistry so well. While being cute. Such a pro.
