My experience: purchased 4 High # boxes within 3 months @ $125 ea. 6 Griffeys, 7 Randy, 8 Smoltz. My best (and only) Griffey I want to slab is an 8, 8.5 on a GREAT day. 80% of the Star Rookies were affected by the team holograms in middle of pack. Side note: I purchased 4 1993 UD factory sets from different sources, and one was a gold. Unfortunately, it was bricked. The Jeter is going to PSA regardless (6 IMO), but the Chipper has a shot at a 9. Nice vid, always like a blast from the past.

I remember these cards, my first pack was 87 Topps with the wood border, these Upper Decks were a special treat , they were more expensive then the Topps. The good ole days lol.

Great video!!! Takes me back to my youth. Now living in Carlsbad CA I drive by Upper Deck corporate office often and the logo on the building always makes me think about being a kid opening packs of cards.

Seeing 89 upperdeck in 1990 I was so impressed with the quality that the card obsession began.

100% correct…any card I pull, submit and 10, instantly becomes a PC Card…very hard to part with the card knowing the effort it takes to get a 10 in hand…love the process!

I remember opening boxes of this as a kid with my dad. We used to do shows and flea markets. From what I remember, the star rookies are collated to come out in order of the card numbers. For example you get card #8 in one pack, #7 in the next etc.

This is an amazing series Stryker. I started buying cards in ‘89 as well and the Griffey Upper Deck was so next level back then. All I could afford as a kid was Topps or Donruss with the odd Upper Deck pack if I was lucky. I grew up in Toronto and hockey was king, but baseball had that special aura to me. The Griffey and then Frank Thomas in 1990 made baseball cards more appealing to me.
Keep up the great work and I’ll be tuning in to every one of them.

Love this series! Your story growing up was exactly like mine. I only opened one pack of upper deck. You can tell by looking in my boxes. Mainly for the same reason as you. My parents took me to all the flea markets. Til’ this day I still don’t have an upper deck Griffey. Keep up the great videos.

It's probably been said in here but the Griffey was often so OC because of where it was at the corner of the sheet. That is why Upper Deck ended up printing entire sheets of the Griffey.

Love the video. Love watching old wax being open especially the ones that have value in 10 Grade. I have seen people open an entire box and not get a Griffey. So if you want a guarantee to have a Griffey buy the complete set. Please show more of older wax. And Tiffany sets sound awesome. How about a 1986 topps traded Tiffany set. Would love to see you pull a centered Bonds. Keep up the good work

Stryker, I would still send those 2 Griffey’s to Beckett. I sent my child hood UD Griffey rc I had been holding on to for 30 years to Beckett and it received an 8.5+. Sold that puppy for $350. I regret it ever since. But I don’t think I would have gotten as much if it was a PSA 9.

I found one Griffey 89 upper deck rookie in my life "in the wild" someone stashed it away in a box in the late 80s or early 90s that was divided by teams. then i found it while searching that box several years ago. excellent condition. only time i ever owned that legendary card. sold it awhile back

Wow what a video. I can say that you have the most informative baseball card breakdowns in the hobby by far. Thank you for spending so much time on making unbelievable content and once again making a chase card video that takes me back to my childhood. Ken Griffey Jr is my favorite player all time and remember buying 2 hobby boxes of 1989 donruss and not getting one rated rookie. I wish you all the luck in your endeavors and can't wait for the next Griffey Jr video. I have an idea for you if you haven't thought of it, I would love it if you could put together a subscription box of your own for the slammers. I know they would sell like hot cakes. Thank you for all you do for the hobby!

In my life I opened 3 boxes of low number and never pulled a Griffey and then in the mid 90s I bought half a box of high number and got 2 off centered Griffey’s in the same pack and then another in a separate pack … all we’re about 75/25 with centering wish I had a video of that day but RUclips probably wasn’t even a thought
The football is high series I think cause he’s with the rangers on that card

Those boxes can be brutal.....No Randy Johnson RC, No John Smoltz RC, No Gary Sheffield RC, only 1 Biggio RC, only 1 Griffey RC, which was way OC. At least you got the 1. On a side note, of course your best bet is to buy the sealed factory sets. You can get 2 sets for the price of a box basically. You are guaranteed 2 of every RC and star that way and they have been in the box versus packs, so you should have nicer cards (better corners). Plus you get the high numbers which include the Ryan football card and the Vizquel RC.

*** STRYKER *** There are 2 checklists in this set that have the Griffey RC listed on them. One is #27 and the other is just one of main checklists for the set at the end. Both can bring some money if graded a PSA 10. I think checklist #27 (Star Rookies) has a very low pop, like 18-20, and the last one sold for $300. Should probably pull those, lol.

Any cards that were in contact with the holo team logo stickers in the pack have a very good chance of having a faint circular impression. It's hard to see unless you look for it. Upper Deck didn't have print issues or flaws in 1989 hence the "Premium" baseball card company claim.
