Coronation street was the thing to watch back years ago I still watch the classics but the modern corrie doesn't do it for me . Great memories and video 🤝
Great video, thank you. Visited the set a couple of times, sad to see it gone. The Chevrolet I seem to remember being in the visitor centre in the 90’s
Originally a street in Salford was used for the exterior shots, which was demolished in the nineties. The purpose built set did form part of the popular Granada Studios Tour and I was there with hundreds of fans going up and down the street.
I was there today, if you go on the other side to studio one you can see the doors used for Carla's apartment. It still has Connor on the intercom. Its actually the doors to the green room
@@gra5793 The oild studios in Quay St were becoming expensive to run and too big, so it made sense for Granada to move to Salford Quays. They could have left the Rovers Return as a tourist attraction, though.
@@gra5793 Yes, too small for all those shops owned by characters who happen to live within a street or two and are only used by the few characters who live within a street or two yet magically remain profitable (until the usual 'closure' storyline happens, especially with the pub and corner shop). And if the shopping centre's worth of shops isn't enough, a new 'parade' opens. What I find amazing with the shops/restaurants etc. is that after each 'fire' storyline, the interior layout becomes implausibly different and twice as big. I wonder if they ever explained how the pub became twice as big and gained an extra upstairs window or why the bay windows became flatter (apart from a set design error of course).
@@Epalvosh Except the Rovers fire in 1986, when the interior set actually became half the size after the fire, having lost the 'snug' and 'select' (the latter of which would have to have spanned the entirety of Rosamund Street when mapped onto the exterior set).
good video had a look round the other week, not brave enough to go in the car park though so took my photos through the fence. be fun to have a look round the whole area when it's all finished being redeveloped
I went yesterday, stumbled upon it by mistake just went into the car park, there’s no signs saying you can’t access the car park as that’s all it really is now. Plus there’s nothing they could actually do except tell you to get out of the car park as it’s publicly accessible anyway.
I knew the buildings from the set had been demolished, but I'm shocked that the entire thing has been tarmacked over now. Back in 1989 when Steph Barnes' uncle built the new buildings from the hairdressers to the garage he inexplicably built a large cobbled area between the garage and Gail's house, and it had embedded railway sleepers in it for no apparent reason. In fact that wasn't for any reason that made sense to the storyline, but because the land had been a railway yard before Granada bult the Coronation set there, and the previous community centre and factory had been fake fronts, so whatever was behind the fake fronts had remained unchanged since (I presume) Victorian times, and by 1989 wasn't allowed to be altered so had to be implausibly incorporated into the onscreen new development that year. So I'm a little puzzled that that bit of the land wasn't allowed to be changed in any way in 1989, to the point that they had to convince viewers that a late 80s yuppy developer for some reason laid cobbles and railway sleepers on a modern new build development, but by 2017 it was completely fine to just tarmac that area after all.
Sad it was a tv history spot they could have put a plaque up at least.. What happened the old granada building was it renovated or raised to the ground.
It would be too heartbreaking to visit there now , I grew up in the ‘70s and loved the classic characters from that era . I would be expecting see the ghost of Bobby the cat and Ray Langton for that matter.
The buildings as I understand were literally set dressing so were probably rotten and falling apart, much like the old Eastenders, literally plastic and asbestos, seems they kept what they could, the structures that exist were built much more recently and could be saved. Interesting video.
Thats why I couldn't ever watch modern corrie in the same way again. I used to love watching and knowing thats where some iconic characters/actors from yesteryear had an argument or that's where..happened. The new set doesn't have that 'classic' feel to it.

Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed!
@TheWalkingExplorer can you give me the Google map coordinates for the old set please ?
@jasonpotter2317 maps.app.goo.gl/VWjtUEXhzWByRyNc7?g_st=ic is the link, or search for The Crystal Maze. You have to walk past it to get there.
@@TheWalkingExplorer thank you I've managed to find it. Why did the set move ?

It’s really sad they couldn’t keep the former set. All the history in that one area.
Great video, thank you. Visited the set a couple of times, sad to see it gone.
The Chevrolet I seem to remember being in the visitor centre in the 90’s
Kinda sad really. Would have been cool for them to just turn it into actual businesses and a pub
Yeah. Seems sad to see that it’s basically been turned into a car park. All that history - gone!

It’s a joke they demolished it no reason as all should have just become a museum or something not a car park!
They weren’t proper buildings so probably were rotten and falling apart. Seems they kept what the could.
i mean they took all the cobbles to the new set, so it would have just been buildings
They did not, it was all new cobbles
@@Sanchordia7000 cobbles were reused from the old Quay Street set and placed on the new set.
It won’t be a car park for long

Knocking a set down just to make a new one, absolutely mad.
Wasn't technically that. With HD and other progression in filming, the set was too small

@@MrDannyDetail What happened to the function room in the back?
At least we can still see where it was by the landmarks at either end! Most places are completely erased from existence!
The Stables was a real ( private ) bar for Granada staff.
I spent many a day there collecting autographs
My mum and I visited the old set 10 years ago. Wow now it's flattened tarmacked and parking space now.
Great footage 👌
This was the 2nd outdoor set, the first was the other side of the bonded warehouse.
While it's not my sort of thing, my Mum loved it and visited the set in the 80s. I still have the photos somewhere.
I think ITV missed a trick by not using the old set for a prequal series of The Street. The life and loves of a young Elsie Tanner!
good video

I remember visiting the Old Coronation Street Set. Looks very different now though
Its up there with knocking the original Cavern down, absolute clowns.
When I visited in 2023, they still had the faded backdrop of the next street hanging up. Looks like it's gone now.

Can anyone now go there and go where you want on the old set
