What also always helps me is to start with a standard test photo (with which I have no emotional involvement with to avoid distraction) with the generic icc profiles of the supplier. This test photo consists of several smaller photos, each with its own test goal .That almost always goes well. And because of the frequent use of the same test photo, You will getting better and better at finding something from that photo as objective as possible (which I think is impossible to judge with photos). In some cases I make or have a custom profile made, but that is not always an improvement guaranteed.
I bought paper last year from a photography store. There was no icc profile for it and no media type. I went through half the pack before I found a paper setting that actually worked. I believe it was promaster. I’ll try the paper you are recommending here.
All of the PermaJet papers have an ICC profile and suggested media type to get you printing great results straight away 👌We also have a custom ICC profiling service if there's no profile available for your printer
Analogy : You ear this man speaking, he has a certain "accent" for some people and none for some others . Supposing it exist one and only one "good" way to pronounce the words, a profile would (through a device) apply some tones to his speech to correct the sound of the words to the nearest possible tones of the supposed "good" pronunciation . To do that, you need of course to compare both and apply the difference.

That's a great way of testing them out!

Exactly that!
