Was super pumped to see it when it premiered on MUBI in the states, but I agree I felt some what underwhelmed Great visuals and cool music. The Gaston rant was iconic and jokes at the same time.
Good looking but somewhat hollow and superficial it feels. Was surprised that all directors and writers are men, not sure if they tried too hard in making statements.
Maybe that was the point of the characters, especially the dancers. Remember what Gaston said about the music the street dancers are into? Its like a prison, a prison to a life of sex, drugs and less freedom .Typically similar to mainstream music amongst the masses. And what if he is right with the music that he prefers, for freedom? He likes the avant-garde-ish type of music that provokes people to either think or deny.
And listen to the soundtrack, it feels eerie to the point of you feeling uncomfortable. It’s like true freedom. People say they want it but when they do, they feel uncomfortable and would revert to they old ways for comfort.
My film of the year (so far ) so interesting to hear a different perspective. Great review 👍
As always I admire your insight my friend. Hope you are keeping well :)

Music was great yeah. It was released in theatres here and definitely looked beautiful on a big screen
