Five Minute Histories: Carr's Beach

For generations, on hot summer days Black Baltimoreans flocked to Carr’s Beach just south of Annapolis. During Jim Crow, many Maryland beaches barred African Americans and the Black community had to establish its own resorts like Carr’s Beach. Here vacationers could swim in the Bay and dance to show-stopping live acts like Ray Charles, Chuck Berry and Ella Fitzgerald. We are thrilled to be joined by Vince Leggett, founder and president of the Blacks of the Chesapeake Foundation, to talk about recent efforts to save this historic property. My family from Baltimore and DC used to meet at Carrs Beach on some Sundays after church. Wonderful food,great fun and outstanding entertainment.
In the 1960"s there were end of the school year ,all night, parties for the Baltimore teachers.

Oh I remember Carr's Beach fondly. Our family had summer cabins north of Carr's near Back Creek. There used to be bar called the Dew Drop in which I believe was in an old log cabin. My dad and uncle used to go there to drink even though they were white. Great story!

My parents took me and my siblings to the beach when I was five years old in 1959, It was very hot and super crowded! The restrooms were terrifying for a little kid! I did not know at that time that a person of color could not attend the other beaches,,,,
