The Day Kendrick Lamar Changed Hip Hop Forever

  • Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Control’ 6 Years Later - Dooms Day in wack rapper colonies has been remembered as August 14th, 2013, better known as the date in hip-hop history, that Kendrick Lamar dropped an atomic bravado bomb, on a song that wasn’t even his, no less. Lamar left nothing untouched during his epic verse on Big Sean’s “Control.” After the total seven and a half minutes of smoke cleared, it was almost forgotten that there were actually two other exceptional verses other than Kendrick’s on that thing, one from its host and a rare appearance from the nomadic, mystifying figure Jay Electronica.

      TruMusic89 Cardi, Uzi, Lil Yachty weren’t hot or even relevant as rappers in 2012-13. The music did change and it’s the cultural consensus that there is two classes of Hip Hop, the ones who describe themselves as “Rock Stars” i.e. ruling popular music and the ones who dictated the culture that also have comercial success and critical acclaim. That’s your Kendricks, Coles, Drakes, Big Seans, Kanyes, at the time ASAP Rocky etc. I can’t name all of them obviously 🙄.

Kendrick was never aiming to make that type of music go away, he never even mentioned people like Uzi or Yachty, he only said people he saw as competition. The change in the music scene was also evident after that verse.

    "I'm the King Of New York" is a reference to the movie: King of New York with Christopher Walken.
    He means I'm Frank White, the King of the coast.
    It's meant to make you wonder whether he tried to claim he runs N.Y. or referencing the movie.

      Smh, it’s Hiphop culture street slang. “I run the block” “ I run the streets, I’m the king of the streets” I’m the king of NY” to show who’s the best and who’s running the rap game. Eminem can say he’s the king of Detroit or the Midwest. This has nothing to do with a movie reference.

    • @5ilentPartner
      @5ilentPartner 3 года назад

      @@NYCBX9 You don't know shit! It is definitely partially a movie reference. Like I said it could be both. The listener has to decide what they think it is. Kendrick was asked about it at a SXSW interview and confirmed it. Kurupt talked about it on Vlad
