I served on the USS Missouri when that pic was taken. It actually moves the ship over ten feet. That is a lot of tonnage being moved by simple firepower. The USS Missouri Iowa class is an amazing feat of technology. I enjoyed serving on that ship it was a piece of history. I mean how many ships pulled into the enemies harbor and had them surrender on them? Just the USS Missouri BB-63. Battleship sailors get the job done with a 16 inch gun.
My dad was stationed on the USS Iowa when he was in the navy, I showed him this video and it was like nostalgia to him. But he wanted me to correct one thing about what Wren said. The "battleship" isn't obsolete. When my dad was on the USS Iowa he said that it had all 3 turrets as well as cruise missiles. This was a wonderful video and I want to see more!!!!
Wren is pretty young and dumb. He's at that point where he's Googling things to put in the video, rather than fact-checking things he already kinda knows, and has no idea how much of a dick he sounds when he calls artillery shells "bullets".
To be honest I am sure the Guns in the Iowa are cheaper to fire than a cruise missile, obviously the precision of a cruise missile is much more than a battleship's main guns, but you can put more fire on a target with them for a comparable price

Small corrections:
The turrets wouldnt fall out if the ship capsizes, they are held in place by brackets. You dont want 2000 tons to bounce around when the battleship is hit by equally powerful projectiles as itself fires, as they might penetrate the armored deck and explode somewhere on their way to the armored citadel or directly on the turret barbette. Or in a severe storm. 2000t is heavy, but it can still be rocked.
Even when a full broadside is fired, the ship wouldnt move feet sideways. Its simple physics: You fire 9x 1.2t projectiles versus a ship that weighs 57000 tons in addition to the water backing it: action and reaction. Inches of movement would a surprise.

You pointed out one myth but stumbled into another one - not only will the recoil from the guns not capsize the ship, it's not going to move the ship sideways at all - it's just too big. Even if the Iowa was a frictionless hovercraft and there was no water to slow it down, the recoil would push it about six inches per second. I would suggest before making comments on videos that you do a little research because in this case you REALLY look like a moron. In artillery caliber is a different term than in fire arms. The Iowa's guns are 16 inch 50 caliber guns. 50 caliber mean if you multiply 50 times 16 inches it will give you the length of the barrel from breech to the end of the barrel. In this case 800 inches or 66 feet and 6 inches. The battleships of the North Carolina and South Dakoda class had 16 inch 45 caliber guns, 720 inches from breech to the tip of the barrel or 60 feet. I served on the USS Iowa as a gunners mate in 16 inch turret one, don't bother trying to argue with me, I know what I am talking about.
Thanks for the correction, I completely that the 50 caliber bit was for the length of the guns, not for the main bore of them, my bad. I will correct my previous comment.
That skyscraper comparison was pretty neat.
"Talking about 1940s technology against alien technology" Battleship ahem...

Or did battleship take them from Bo3? I dont remember the date off the top of my head

5:05 They are actually Mark 7 guns but the full name of it is Mark 7 50. Caliber 16inch Gun
Have watched this several times now and only just noticed that Wren pulled the photo at the beginning "out" of the screen, and that it wasn't just taped on. XD
The only thing that annoyed me was the fact that he called the shells “bullets”
nice scp lab
What if im a giant..?
I just wanna be like everybody else
It bothered me that he called them .50 caliber guns at 4:26. Caliber is not defined by the length, only the diameter of the bullet/shell.
@@jacksonlebihan1318 *pulls out my .50 cal pipe rifle with a 3 foot long projectile*
Yes, its width, not length.
(Also I should mention that pipe gun sucks, it makes a shluck sound and drops the rod on the ground, butane powered)
Also, y’Know, he keeps saying that they are 16 feet in diameter
I have learned more from your videos than I did from the design school I went. Thanks a ton.
If that is true you should probably ask for your tuition to be refunded.
Rahul R you should’ve gone to a better school then
You weren't paying attention.

@Adequate Bros. Or, thanks a cubic meter of water!
(I have no apologies either)
This video is like a kid that just found something amazing 15 years after everybody else 😂
More like 70 years...
He did a decent job of explaining everything -- not perfect, but a good intro for kids who don't know.
3:40 For those curious, another example of this concept is the Genie A2A missile. See Kyle Hill's video on the subject (The time we nuked five men to prove a point).
I love these videos of Wren using VFX to show the true mass of things that we normally wouldn't comprehend without it. Living in New Zealand, i don't get the opportunity to even glimpse at one of these massive ships. Sure i can look at pictures and see the length in numbers but VFX puts these things into a perspective that most people can relate to. Please keep making these vids!
Also it is really cool seeing how excited Wren gets when explaining these topics xD

I just noticed that the image that he starred this on is that of the USS Missouri which is in Iowa class battleship but it was modified extensively after the war they had on tomahawk cruise missiles and a drone launch. That was a post war photo.
All 4 Iowas underwent the same modifications and modernization for the gulf war, not just Missouri.

To be honest, what I find almost more impressive than the firepower of the these monstrosities is the amount of firepower they can withstand. They'd basically shrug off bombs that would level an entire city block if those didn't hit the exact right spot (or even survive nuclear bombs being detonated less than a mile away with minor damage... other than radiation).
one of the iowa's sister ships survived exactly that as part of testing the effect of nuclear weapons on navies, when this had next to no effect it was followed up by a nuke being set off directly _under_ the center of the ship as if it had run afoul of a nuclear naval mine, when that _also_ failed to kill it they started shelling the ship with every gun they had in the vicinity because...well frankly the summary on that makes it look a lot like the reason was more "because we could" than as any sort of real test. it was already decommissioned and cleaned out and slotted to be sunk the fact that it had survived everything slotted to sink it just made it a valid target to screw around with because from an engineering standpoint the nuke "tests" were just politicians screwing around to begin with so of course they could sign off on screwing around some more.
the ship was something like 55,000 tons of steel with a couple thousand tons of other stuff bolted too it, it ignored the first nuke because that really wasn't all that much energy on target as far as the ship itself is concerned (REALLY bad for any crew aboard obviously but even there people inside it instead of on deck and in the extremities would have fared surprisingly well) they weren't even really testing anything with that they were just setting off a nuke for funzies because they could. the underwater nuke was more of an actual test...but more one for the decommissioned ship than for the already long since predicted + known + repeatedly tested effects of the underwater nuke: a charge like that on a smaller scale is used to create a pocket of space under the middle of the ship and effectively *drop* it on both ends while applying a shock to the center, with most ships this pretty much breaks it in half but once they get built tough enough they go from that being almost guaranteed fatal to barely noticing it happened within a few percent more or less structural strength, the Arizona was well into the "more" end of that scale so it just sorta wiggled a bit and got seawater splashed all over it in spectacular fashion because as weird as it may sound for a ship that size sailing in rough weather is fairly comparable to having a damned nuke go off under it. after that it survived about two and a half days of shelling before it FINALLY sunk but that number is fairly misleading since they were aiming for the deck and superstructures and the general area of the ship just using it as a target for everyone to shoot at instead of trying to pound away at one spot near the water line (the bit I read on this didn't say much about that part but my guess would be that they were firing from extreme range so they pretty much would have just been shelling the general vicinity with the ship in it more than actually trying to sink the ship).
trying to destroy something like that by shooting dense metal bullets at it just adds more mass and trying to break it apart with the somewhat unfocused use of explosives is a looooooooong process involving delivering and applying a significant portion of the ship's weight in explosive material, if they're not firing accurately enough to get repeated hits to the same spot they aren't dealing much damage and if they aren't hitting somewhere at or under the water line the ship just plain doesn't care.
a modern anti-ship missile might not even hit as hard as one shell from one of those naval guns instead what it does instead is deliver that payload of energy in a focused manner to within a few inches of where you want it to hit. same for most other modern weapons the guidance systems for missiles (and any bombs that aren't designed to have an excuse to hit "unintended" targets) are reliably accurate and the fire control systems for ballistics are _insane_ to the point where part of how tanks get through armor is to fire several rounds on different parabolas all set to arrive in a line with a few inches between each projectile all hitting the same spot at the same time all as one ongoing impact. the standard way for one ship to kill another nowadays would be to have several aircraft up in the air spotting and relaying data on everything in about 50 miles of themselves spread out covering the hundred or so miles around the ship(s) they are spotting for and then just fire a set of missiles at anything they decide they don't like within about a hundred miles, big missiles have a dozen or so different data systems they can sync up with for guidance most of which will get them good odds of that waterline shot.

5 British.

9 Federation - Starfleet.
5 Klingon.
