Power Boost on the BMW S1000XR

  • Took the bike in for her first service at 1000km, had the rev limiter restriction removed and installed the power boost dongle! The power difference is amazing, wasn't expecting it to be as much as it was. The dongle doesn't only free up the last riding mode (Dynamic Pro) but gives you more power throughout all riding modes.

    Here in Australia the XR comes standard with 2 modes - Road and Rain . The Dynamic and Dynamic Pro are an option everyone takes (for more money , of course) . These do not give more power per se , but feel like it because they deliver it more quickly . I think it needs less throttle rotation , respectively , to get the same power as you move the mode up to the next mode .The 9,000 rpm limiter is for running in purposes but if you've been using Road mode and then have the limiter removed together with selecting Dynamic Pro , well , then its going to feel real fast . The modes also affect stability control (or Dynamic Traction control , if optioned ) and ABS matching their performance to the mode selected .

    there is no power boost, there is no noise boost, that is the placebo effect, ....the pro mode only shortens the throotle moovement radius and turns off the aids. :)

    I ride 99% of the time with the riding aids turned up to keep things tame... on the ducati they're easy to adjust and I have touring set for "keep things under control" and sport mode set for "not quite stupid". I have to change sport mode through the menus if I want to shut everything off. These bikes are a handful without traction and wheelie control enabled -and if you make the mistake of forgetting you've turned them off then woe is you the next time you pull away from a stop (personal experience, things got a bit hairy).

    I forgot to mention that rain mode does reduce power and torque . The other three modes affect the delivery character , not the quantity .

    Okej. But i have ridden sportsbikes for almost 40 years. Mostly Italian and not much commuting, only like 5000-9000 km a year average total riding. In Sweden in 2018 there was 2 accidents I know all details about. One was a midage woman on a new Honda Cruiser. 10 other people stopped at a T-crossing at a full stop. There was a little sand and gravel on the street and that made her bike take 3 m more to a full stop than old Harleys and other slow underbraked bikes.. She stopped in the middle of a main road. The approaching Scania could not stop in time...
    The other was also a girl rider. I knew her quite well. We were both members of two clubs for trackday interested bikers. She was faster, younger and spent more money on bikes than I do. Riding with fast friends entering a nice road, after leaving a village she showed off her new bike and made a nice power-wheelie. No one knows what then happened, BMW and Swedish authorities are still investigating, but for no reason, and witnesses swearing that no break light was on, her front wheel locked up. On a short racy bike like hers that made a stoppie so bad that nobody could count the degrees.... She is alive but severely injured.
    I had a BMW R1150R for commuting and a little traveling. (Most of the traveling and holidays happened to be with my Benelli Tornado 900 RS instead) . The Nellie is not so comfy, but more fun when you find an alp or a trackday in Germany or Austria). The BMW roadster though was a likable bike. When I bought it cheap there were a few issues. It run too lean, the now known dangerous brakes (ABS 2 Evolution system) and a too soft setup on the strange parallelogram forks. A tuning chip, a sports air filter , some Pro-Brake lines, throwing away the expensive, complicated electronic and hydraulic system , and some elbow grease fixed that. After this mod's I still could not live with this bike. The annoying problem with the ABS system failing it's own self diagnosis disappeared but my confidence in the bike had disappeared. Only twice, but that is more than enough, the brakes went into "ABS-failure rest braking". In reality that meant braking so hard as you could with the front brake gave a 1 till 2 seconds delay and then very little brakes anyway. One of these times was on German Autobahn in high speed. The German drivers discipline ,staying in line, saved my life..!
    The new owner, who I met on a bike security training day last autumn, is very satisfied with his bike. He also has two friends, with BMW'S , who wants their Abs-systems removed. And they are not trackday riders, they just don't trust the electronic mumbo jumbo!
    Take care out there, and don't trust a computer to care for you. By the way, how often did you have to restart your phone, computer or laptop the last year........ And they can fail without being really dangerous to you or your company.
    Regards and no offense taken,
    Rolf

      Love my R9T but think the S100XR is probably a little better in the rain. Also, it's probably more comfortable on longer rides, especially for the passenger. Around the 80 mile mark the R9T kills my lower back.

      It's a fun bike. Very mechanical feeling, in comparison to the S1000XR. Doesn't have any rider aids aside from ABS.
      Suspension needed upgrading, though.
      I'm being financially responsible and not test riding one again, LOL! I know getting that thing on the open highway will lead to gross irresponsibility.

    "The dongle doesn't only free up the last riding mode (Dynamic Pro) but gives you more power throughout all riding modes." yes, but only on restricted bikes. Normal bikes have no limit on them, so the Dynamic Pro plug only enables the Dynamic Pro feature. No change to the others.

    • @antoniorussell9893
      @antoniorussell9893 8 лет назад

      I said on restricted bikes. There are several scenarios when a bike may be restricted (certain countries, age restrictions, etc.) Your bike had the restriction lifted after the first service as its a normal (read "regular") bike. Nothing to do with the dongle. Had your bike been a restricted model generally, the dongle would then release the extra horsepower. By the way the Dynamic Pro should only be used when riding on a track (not public roads). Enjoy the bike. Loving your videos :-)

      +TheLikeableRider You actually said "had the rev limiter restriction removed and installed the power boost dongle! " Dynamic Pro is not a power boost dongle. You get the same power as Dynamic mode, it just tones down the ABS, DTC, etc. so the bike is less safe to ride... hence the track use.

      "With the dongle that I connected, it then gives you the fourth riding mode(dynamic pro) and gives you more power within all riding modes"
      You keep repeating this and its wrong. On a normal bike the dongle does not give you more power within all riding modes. If its limited to 9K revs until the first service it will continue to be restricted.

      Yes, selectively quoted. You left out the essential part. On a regular bike the coding plug will not increase HP across all modes, it just enables dynamic pro mode. Only on bikes that have been restricted for certain markets does the coding plug release that restriction.

    Why don't you save a ton and buy an older bike without these stupid electronics? My Moto Morini Corsaro 1200 Veloce needed a proper mapping, thanks Moto Star, Sjöb,Sweden. Now it is super smooth, very fast, very entertaining, and super safe due to excellent handling and maybe the best brakes ever. "First generation of Brembo Gold Line radials.." You will have to practice gas-control and proper braking, but if you get in trouble it's your own fault, not a strange "security system " which when it fails will kill you. BMW and Honda had major issues and recalls with ABS-systems on bikes, now Volvo recalls 750 000 cars due to unreliable "intelligent " braking systems.... If you don't know how to make an emergency braking, sit wrong, lock your arms and don't anchor yourself to the bike you probably will fuck up the forks and the handling of your bike so badly that no "security system " could help you!" So buy an older bike without these mumbo jumbo from the EU regulations and spend the cash you saved on practicing with an instructor. Probably you will still have money left for your dream biker holiday too. Take care out there!

    • @ThaSideWeed
      @ThaSideWeed 4 года назад

      First of all, people much smarter than you and me have pretty much agreed that ABS > No ABS.
      Secondly, recalls or not, brakes are brakes. If the ABS stops working properly unexpectedly, it doesn't "kill" you, nothing special happens actually.
      Given the ignorant post I'd assume you don't even ride.
      I've bought this thing for the features it has and new bike warranty. + BMW is the only dealer here that offers test rides.
      Even if you do ride, not everyone who owns one of these modern bikes does 200 km per week on Sunday.
      I'd very much like the ABS to help with braking when I get off my night shift and am super tired, in traffic that someone like you has never experienced before.
