  • Bohemian Band - I Never Knew, Fox-Trot (Unknown author), The Winner 1921 (UK)
NOTE: The Winner records marked with a catchy red picture depicting a jockey winning a horse race were produced by Edison Bell in London until 1935. The company was founded in the early 1890s as an importer of Edison and Columbia phonographs from the USA, but when Edison set up its own European operation in 1904, the import franchise was withdrawn, but the Edison-Bell name remained in use. Winner's records were mostly popular type and sold millions of copies for two decades until in the mid-1930s competition from other low-cost labels such as Eclipse (6-pence) drove the label out of business.
I have no idea who the Bohemian Band was - it was probably one of the Edison Bell house bands recording tons of popular hits for dancing.

A gorgeous, bouncy early 20s tune! The orchestra may be unknown but it is excellent :-) The phonograph themed pictures were delightful as well.

Great record! But Should spin at arround 82rpm! Like this It sounds a bit slow

Those records were made to spin 78 rpm. Why 82? The tune sounds OK for me. Look at the production year: 1921. The fox-trots were a pure novelty then and they were played rather at rag time tempo, and not so quickly as in the later years.

@@240252 no early winners spin at 80/84 you can ask every Major english collector about this! Speed was not standard in 1921 Europe! Recorder were still "weight driven" mechanical machines! For example many fonotipias spin at 74 or 82/83, even some French Pathè from the early 20s spin at 83/4

@@240252 they must be pitched and Speed corrected by ear! in Italy up to 1930 its like that! Fonotecnica spin at 82! Concerto granmofono spin at less than 78! Fonografia spin at 76! Eaglephone at 79! Every record has Its own Speed! Italy Is a great example of this wild jungle
