FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) is the algorithm that converts signals into the frequency domain and back to time domain signals. If you feed 2048 samples (audio pixels) into an FFT it converts it to 2048 frequency bins, with magnitude (volume) and phase. you can process the data however you want and then convert it back. also some other stuff like windowing and overlaps but let's not talk about that. higher FFT sizes have a higher accuracy in pitch, which is why the higher sizes all sound so beautiful and like they have a "higher quality". but needing so many samples to even trigger the FFT process also adds massive amounts of latency and reduces time accuracy which results in those super smeared transients and pre-ringing artefacts. that's part of this algorithm's beauty
