    storyline:
spain's 2.5 million basques go to the polls on 9 march to elect 60 deputies to a new basque chamber, under the terms of a home rule statue on which they voted last october.
spanish premier adolofo suarez flew to the northern basque country on thursday(6 march), in an 11th-hour effort to stop nationalist parties winning a majority in elections to an autonomous basque parliament.
polls indicated the conservative basque nationlist party highly critical of suarez would elect close on 20 deputies - the largest single block- followed a considerable distance by the premier's own democratic centre union.
the basque nationalist party led by carlos garaicoechea, walked out of the madrid parliament two months ago, accusing suarez of refusing to transfer the powers contained in the guernica statute.
the psoe(spanish socialist workers party) leader felipe gonzalez also made similar accusations against the madrid government at a recent election rally in san sabastian. he said the government now seemed to be backing down on the autonomy statute.
on the extreme left-wing of the spectrum are the two wings of the eta movement(eta are the initials for "basque homeland and liberty). eta is divided into two groups:the "poli-milis' the political-military wing of herri batasuna, and the military wing.
most basques live in the provinces of alava, guipuzcoa, viscaya and navarra - the rest are in south-western france in the basse pyrenees section.
the basques have continued to insist on their national identity all through their long and frequently tragic and bloody history. at the outbreak of the civil war in spain they sided with the republic against general franco. in 1937, franco authorised the bombing of guernica - guernica has now become a sacred symbol of basque nationalism.
besides the violence which has continued since the civil war, and has grown since franco's death in 1975, there are other problem: polluted rivers, a fishing industry in serious trouble and industrial development held back by inefficient management and labour strife.
