Interesting story Kev. Like you, I keep an open mind about these things. A few days after my mum died, my dad(who doesn't believe in ghosts/spirits) told me that she appeared at the foot of his bed. He asked what she was doing there and she replied that she'd come to make sure that he was okay. Of course he could've been dreaming but he said it was all very clear. My friends own a very old house and they sense a cold spot on their landing. I've never felt it but other friends have. Spooky! Very interested as you say like your Dad's experience I'm sure he was not dreaming there is a lot in life we can't explain. I think you just have to get on and put it down to the rich tapestry of life. And maybe one day it will all become clear.
