    It might surprise you to know that the first ever cricket international between two countries was in 1844 between America and Canada and played in New York.

      It certainly is between those two nations. I dare say that the rivalry between the subcontinent nations is great but when it comes to tradition and hype nothing quite matches The Ashes.

    One of the things that adds charm to the Ashes is the fact each country has dominated the other for extended periods during its history. So when your country wrests them back from the other, there is always a real sense of excitement.

    It's hard to explain how important The Ashes are to us. The nearly 140 year old series is a ritual that binds England and Australia together. It's a major part of our summer every two years, stretching back through generations.

      aussiemedia1959 That game was actually played with 4 ball overs so the scoring rate was not quite as slow as it appears. Early on the balls per over changed a lot between 4, 6 and 8 but settled on 6 in England and 8 in Australia before settling again on 6 worldwide

    Bro, I'm an Aussie cricket nut and when we play in England it's like a 10.30pm start each day for usually 5 days as test matches go and still trundle off to work.Any time we play the poms in anything I'm up for it.By the way luved ya live stream the other day Go the swans.Onya mate.

      True story - I was British. I applied for an Australian spousal residence visa, now have Aussie Citizenship. My Aussie cricket nut mate was asked by us to create a stat dec about our relationship for the application. He signed it off. "Neil has agreed that if he gets citizenship, he will support Australian cricket for ever after" That's lodged with the Australian Government. So here I am, supporting Australian cricket for the last 15 years... :)

      As an Englishman from the working-class town of Preston in Lancashire, I love cricket and have done since 1963 when I first started playing and watching cricket. I have also always respected the way the Aussies play the game and like Australians in general, better than I like the stiffed necked upper-class tory twats who run Cricket in the UK! Of course, I hope that England plays the best and win the Ashes but may the best team over the series always win!

      If you work for CAs PR department. It's a cynical effort at rehabilitation and a hagiography of Langer and Paine in particular. However, post the SCG test, we now know Paine is just as much of a nasty twat as Warner and the others. Fire in Babylon. Now THAT is a cricket documentary not crafted by a PR department.

    I am a massive cricket fan and there is no bigger rivalry than England v Australia. It is a passionate and hard fought but, mostly, very sporting contest. Love it.

    A cricket-mad uncle told me about "Captain Bligh" when I was young, and for the longest time I thought it was the same Bligh as captained HMS Bounty during the famous mutiny in 1789, subject of my most cherished book when I was a child, a beautifully illustrated and foiled first edition Ladybird hardback, which I still own. I remained slightly baffled by this anachronous connection for years, until eventually forgetting about it. This video has not only reminded me of that confusion, but corrected it. We're all learning. Keep up the good work!

    check out the 1977 Centenary test. Australia won by 45 runs. the exact same amount as the first test in 1877. Pretty freaky.

    one of the most fascinating parts of the Ashes are the stories that have played out, the legends that graced the cricket pitch. A prime example of one of the stories that played out, was the English tour of Australia in 1932-33 also known as the Bodyline Tour, which also in itself contained so many myths, a tactic used by Douglas Jerdine to curb the immensely talented Australian batting, in particular, the legendary Sir Donald Bradman who is regarded as the greatest batsman of all time whose average of 99.94 will never be matched.

    Sunbury, the suburb (a town back then) where Rupertswood is, is about 20 minutes drive from Melbourne, and they have signage about being the birthplace of The Ashes all over the place.

    Just watched it again. It's 11 minutes long. Australia are really pressing England with nearly all the fielders right near the batsmen as they were on the verge of victory.
    England were 500/1 at the start of Bothan's innings and this video ENJOY !

    You should check out the “ underarm incident” Australia vs New Zealand, for a WTF moment in sport. The two nations nearly went to war over it.

      About 15 years or so after it happened, during an America's Cup yachting race, the Australian boat snapped it keel and sunk. When it was shown on the national TV news in New Zealand that evening, the news reader said on air after showing the footage "Serves them right for The Underarm!". So even though many years had passed and was a totally different sport, it shows what a sour taste the incident had left in mouths of the Kiwis.

    Rupertswood in Sunbury, Victoria, was the home of Rupert Clarke. He was a highly influential businessman in his day.
    His home is now used as a Reception Centre for Weddings and other functions.
    Most of his original estate is now Salesian Catholic College Sunbury Campus.

    rupertswood just outside melbourne was a large estate that later became Sunbury. Rupertswood is now a private school but the ovals are still their. I was born in Sunbury, when you drive into the town from any of the main routes your greeted by a sign that sais, welcome to sunbury - birthplace of the ashes with a date and a picture of some cricket stumps i think by memory their is a southern cross or something on their too, i dont really take too much notice of it its one of them things you pass everyday and is kinda insignificant because its a daily thing

    You've got the scoring nailed. You've got hang of overs too, 6 balls (pitches for you) per over so as you said 80 overs = 480 balls. The decimal portion of the 71.3 (.3) is actually the number of balls that were bowled in the 72nd over, so 429 balls had been bowled in that innings. That's another quirk you may need to get your head around, each 'inning' is traditionally referred to in the plural i.e. 'innings', I have no idea why.

      The plural of innings is used because it refers to every batsman having had an inning. So innings is plural because plural batsmen in a team

    One thing to keep in mind is that back then you had to sail (around 6 weeks) to the country. So England and Australia played ashes every 4 years and alternated countries. Cricketers also held full time jobs so many of them were self employed because they had to take off for months at a time. Don Bradman was an Australian iconic batsman and gave the English a lot of grief, so the English formulated "bodyline". Too long winded to go into detail but basically they bowled the ball in line to hitting the batsmans body and the batsmen were so busy protecting themselves, that they often nicked the ball to a fielder. A lot of Aussies were injured in that test and there was a public outcry for unsportsman play. If your interested, a mini-series was released on bodyline.

    The Ashes are played every 2 years. Where it's played, alternates between the two countries England & Australia. It's a summer sport so due to the different hemispheres it's played at different times throughout the year. When it's England's turn to host, it's played during July & August & when it's in Australia, it's played from Late November to early January. (I'm Australian & a cricket tragic)

    There are cricket matches.... and then there is the Ashes match at the MCG that traditionally starts on Boxing Day (day after Christmas). It is the biggest day for Aussie cricket fans and has always produced the most exciting atmosphere in world cricket. Nothing beats 80 - 90K cricket fans going ballistic as the bowler makes his approach for the opening delivery on that day. If you've ever been there, you know what I mean.

    Nice video. You got the idea of the scorecard pretty well. This was a very low scoring game. Usually, you would expect at leat 250 and sometimes as much as 450 in a first innings and 200-250 in a second innings (the pitch tends to deteriorate over the course of a test match, making it harder for the batsmen, which is an important aspect of the game). The overs in those days were 4 balls. The number of balls has changed many times over the years(see Wikipedia). England plays Australia twice every four years. The gap between Ashes test series (the series usually consist of 5 or 6 tests) is about 18 months and about 30 months. The weird gaps are because cricket is played in summer in both countries, so November to January in Australia and July to August in England. The next series will be in the Australian summer of 2021/22.

      @@Isleofskye we moved to Australia in 1965 as part of the "10 Pound POM" scheme, where the Aussie government were subsidising migration. I was only 11 months old!! Better prospects for getting ahead.

    If you are going to watch the ashes, you will need to put aside 25 days (5 games of 5 days), though they don't always go for the full 5 days. I'm not sure if it was changed to three games to cater for more international competition.

      Ashes Series will, for now, remain at 5 matches. For a while in the 80s there were quite often 6 matches.

    Also 71.3 over means that 71 overs were bowled plus 3 deliveries (or what Americans call pitches)
    6 deliveries (pitches) = 1 over

    The Ashes Series are played once every 2-3 years and usually consist of 5 Test matches. Both countries alternate their turn of visiting the other country during their Summer. For example, England hosted the last Ashes series in 2019, hence the next Ashes Series (of 5 Test Matches) will be hosted in Australia in the Summer of 2021/2022.

    Even though they talk about early matches against Australia, Australia did not exist as a country until 1901. England played against a combined team from the six Australian colonies. The people from these colonies all called themselves "Australian".

    One thing on Balls per Over, they have changed over the years and this match was only 4 balls per over, in Australia it used to be 8 ball overs up until 1978, all Cricket is now set at 6 ball overs. Yes the 10th wkt fell on the 3rd ball of the 72nd over. Thus 71.3 overs.

    There is a series on Amazon Prime ( and possibly Netfix?), called 'The Test'. You have to watch it. Its about behind the scenes of the 2019 Australian Ashes Tour of England. It was brutal competition out in the field!!! Such a good flick.

    I was lucky enough to see The Urn in February this year, at the State Library in Melbourne. This is the third time it has left Lords (this video is just a little out of date). The Ashes Urn gets it's own seat in First Class to fly to Australia.

    The scoring rate in this game was slow, but not as slow as you might think at first glance because, until 1889 there were only 4 balls in an over.
    71.3 overs means 71 complete overs plus 3 balls of the 72nd over

    I just love the ashes as an Aussie I hate losing to the English but there was one series we lost but it was I believe the most exciting test series ever it was back in the early 2000s omg was it amazing I was listening on the radio as I worked nights and it was being played in England.

    I don't know if someone has mentioned Don Bradman. He played in the 1930's and after WW2. He finished with a Test batting average of 99.94, almost twice as good as any player before or since.
    If you have a Test batting average of 50, you are a very good player. He only needed four more runs to finish on 100.0 av. In his final innings in 1948, he was out for 0. Cricket can be a funny and cruel game.

      To put that into context for Americans, a batting average of 99.94 is equatable to batting 1000 over a career of professional baseball. The next nine batsmen after Bradman in terms of test averages, average between 58.61 and 63.43

    As batsmen need to bat in pair but there is 11 batsmen, once 10/11 are out, it all out, on the scorecard how each batsmen were got out, apart from one.
    6 balls = over but the over goes up in tenths, so the first over would go
    0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 1, when I read the history, it not always been six balls equalling an over 1880-1888 in England it was 4, then 1889-1899 5, but the standard is now 6.
    Not only is it 5 days but 5 venues having 25

    MCG= Melbourne cricket ground, SCG= Sydney cricket ground, WACA= western Australia cricket association, GABBA= Brisbane cricket ground but in Australia it's called the GABBA.

    If you ever go to London (of course many Americans do), take a trip to Lord Cricket Ground and you'll be able to see The Ashes in the museum. Obviously check their opening hours because if there's a big match on it may be difficult.

    Cricket is the 2nd biggest ball game after soccer! Three types of games are played! Test match, over 5 days..50/50 over match..20/20 over match!..6 delivers to the 'over'..But the ashes is the biggy! Fought, (And i DO mean fought) between Australia and England!..Right now, Australia holds the 'Ashes' because we have bowlers who intimidate!..Bouncing it at their heads between 90-100mph and it's quite legal to do so! A cricket ball is about the same size as a baseball, but harder, and slightly heavier!..A run, or more is scored by beating a fielder by hitting the ball past him! 11 players to a side, 10 of whom must be dismissed before the bowling side can bat! (less injurys)..Have i baffled and confused you yet?..If i go on with this i will!

    71,3 means 71x6 balls plus 3 all out so there is no one else to bowl too. In cricket the dot is not a decimal point it tells how many of 6 balls have been delivered.

    Why do The Ashes generate so much passion? The thing you need to realise when the newspaper obituary announced "the death of English cricket" in 1882 was who played the game and the relationship between the two countries at the time.
    Firstly, cricket was considered a "gentleman's game" in England played by the upper class, the elite of British society. Secondly, Australia was still a British colony (it did not become an independent nation until 1901), founded in 1788 with convicts send 'Down Under' for punishment - basically the dregs of British society. By the 1880s, although convicts were no longer sent to Australia, the British elite still viewed Australians as inferior, often referred to in derogatory terms such as "colonials" and even "convicts", although they were free people.
    So for a group of "upstart colonials" to come to England and beat the elite of their soceity at a game they invented, it wasn't well received in the sacred hallways of the Marylebone Cricket Club, the home of cricket. It basically became a source of not only national pride, but almost a pathological contest between the English who considered themselves naturally superior and the Australians who resented being looked down upon as inferior and had a point to prove. And the rest, as they say, is history.

    @Menke do you know? The Canadian cricket team in the United States in 1844 was both the first official international cricket match and the first official international game of any sport. The match between the two national teams was billed as 'United States of America versus the British Empire's Canadian Province'. ... Canada won by 23 runs.

    Australia won 4-0 in 2017-18 in Australia and it was 2-2 in England in 2019(5 Match series), would have been 3-1 to Australia except for an incredible Innings played by Englands Ben Stokes( look up Ben Stokes Leeds 2019). next series is in the Australian Summer of 2021-22, Australia has been fairly dominant in the last 3 Decades, winning 11 series to 5 with 1 drawn(won 46 matches to 17)
    You should take a look at the career of Don Bradman he finished his Test Career with an average of 99.94, thats the equivalent of a MLB batter hitting. .594 in a career

    Nice to hear an American get interested in Ashes history. An important point about the Ashes the video you watched didn't address was why losing to Australia in 1882 was such a big deal.
    Cricket was very much an expression of the British class system. England cricket teams were made up of Gentlemen and Players. Gentlemen were technically amateurs, privately educated and upper class. Players were paid professionals, and working class. The divisions were so clear that Gentlemen and Players on the same team sometimes had different dressing rooms and entrances! It's notable that Association Football (Soccer) didn't really have these class divisions.
    It was and still is harder for teams to win away than at home, because the ball bounces off the pitch, requiring different techniques - a bit like the difference between a grass court and a clay court in tennis, but much, much more so. In 1882 Britain was at its peak as a colonial power, and the British upper class assumed superiority over all its colonies, including Australia. So to lose in England to a bunch of rough colonials was a bit sobering for the upper classes.
    That class and colonial history will always be in the background of the England v Australia rivalry. For example, the Bodyline series in the 1930s where England went all out to win, arguably abandoning their own standards of upper class 'fair play'. And in the 1980s Ian Botham was a key player for England who won the 1981 Ashes. Now a Sir, he came from a working class background. Botham was actually very popular when he played State Cricket in Australia, because as one Australian commentator put it; "People see him as one of their own. There's a certain breed of tough Englishman that came to Australia, and became Australian".
    If you've time, watch 'Fire in Babylon' about the great West Indies teams of the 1970s-1990s. That has an equally potent history of colonialism and race.

    You can have an over that’s for example 49.2 overs but you get all 10 batsmen of the opposite team out so you can’t bowl to anyone 👌🏼

      Australia used to have 8 ball overs until the 1980's when telelvision advertising became so important and they changed to 6 ball, getting more TV ads on per hour.

    Need to watch last series in 2019... ended a drawn series, but one of the greatest in modern times! 2005 is the most memorable one for English fans, but since then Australia have done us 5-0 (whitewash) twice! Definitely a bucket list test match to be there live.

      Hubby was at the first match of that series. It was at Trent Bridge, England lost and Botham resigned as captain; Mike Brierley came in and masterminded a comeback in the series.

      @Darren Bath I agree. I generally can't be bothered with limited-over stuff and always regard Test cricket as the acme of the sport. And for me, the acme of Test cricket is the Ashes. And the acme of Ashes Tests are when England beat the great Aussie team. And the best victories are when we get them in Australia.
      Even though India is the number one test side, there's nothing quite like the excitement of a real Ashes tour.

    Please react to a series (or parts of a series) called "25 moments that changed cricket." Or at least watch number 21. That video is truly heartbreaking. (There is no set order to watch them so u wont miss anything from the other 20 before it so u can watch ep 21 on its own).     Australia was still 6 colonies of Great Britain in 1882. It didn't become independent until 1901. Worse still, than being beaten by the colonials, an all-indigenous cricket team travelled to England in the 1860's ..... & beat the English side. Both the English & Australians were very embarrassed & not much was heard about it since.
