Mine grew up this way to. Used a hoof pick to chip salt from the block. Made forts out in the sagebrush. Created their own rodeo's with a pallet "chute" and "rode" the leppy calf. Watched calves be born and saw them when they died. It was look for your own entertainment out here. The meme that used to be on FB (maybe it still is, I am not on it anymore) was the one that said "Kids need more tackleboxes and less Xbox's) while I completely agree, how are kids in the city or suburbs supposed to learn responsibility with no chores, learn life and death without animals, learn work if something is already built or done?

I personally think Peter has one of the best channels here on this platform. I never once ever felt like leaving mid video; always keeping the audience engaged.
Honestly, out of all of the stories you've covered on Amish and even the Appalachian families, this family seems the most well-adjusted and loved. A good balance of traditional values & hard work, with modern sensibilities and love for their children and one another. A family that *values* each member without guilting you, or being too judgemental of the outside world.
Also he realizes that he really does have more conveniences and help in 2023 than his grandparents great-grandparents did. They couldn't just go down to the grocery store and in purchase all of the items that you can in our today's world. Also couldn't eat a pizza on the way home. He seems to have found the balance between modern and old-time values. Being 79 I was raised on a farm and we had an outhouse for quite a while. And we didn't have all of the grocery stores where we could get just anything we wanted. I have said all my life that being raised on the farm was the most valuable thing that I did in my life because it taught me how to handle rough times as well as good times. I really do like the way that they have found a wonderful balance between maintaining core values from yester-years while using the benefits of living in our today's society.

1) Own the land
2) Have a sustainable income-stream
3) Maintain balance, neither shunning nor blindly endorsing the new social-media model of how to live.
Sadly, two of those are under constant threat while the third has diminishing returns on effort vs personal benefit.

We are 11th generation Mainahs, we have seen our state overrun by folks moving here for the rural farm, lakes, mountains and coastal fishing communities which has driven the prices of real estate through the roof making it nearly unattainable for native folks to purchase real estate here. And the BIGGEST problem we have here in Maine other than the high real estate prices is the fact that people move here to get away from overbearing city and state regulations and over population in their communities, yet instead of leaving that “city” mindset in the communities they left, they bring it with them. Then they get elected to town boards and the state house and institute the same oppressive regulations they fled from. We don’t fault people who want to move here, Maine is beautiful and one of the safest places to raise children, but please leave your politics and oppressive regulations at the state border. We welcome folks here, but please leave us alone, don’t turn our beautiful state into the place you fled from…that’s all we ask…and that’s all he was saying about his community in Idaho.

@@gary9346 I'm already west, I live in a ranch 15 miles outside Victoria Texas where we raise goats and spent my childhood living at the family ranch. We had a few hundred acres and had cattle, pigs, chickens and ducks but the main income was from farming tomatos, potatos and corn. So I know full well that lifestyle which is why I commented on it. I don't know where you live and don't care but you made a stupid comment without knowing anything about me. hundreds of thousands of kids have these good values in their upbringing without religion, just don't hear about them often because they are the quiet families that don't cause drama and all that. A lot of families I grew up with had it and hardly anyone is religious in the UK. I only know one religious family locally

We homesteaded for over 20 years. Our goal was to grow our own food, keep organic chickens, be as self-sustainable as possible. The disadvantage is when one gets old it's very hard to maintain this lifestyle unless you have children willing to take over and take care of you as well. We did not have children or other family who were interested or willing.
On the not being able to work because of "getting old", is relative.

Seeing these kids it almost makes me cry. I work as a personal assistent in a school in a big city. Many of these kids are sitting behind screens all day long. I just see these kids full of love, joy and passion. What i see on my dayjob is kids at times being robbed of their playfullness and fantasy because everything in life they want is feeded to them. Also they lack responsability. I think the last might be the most important for a healthy child.
Me too, I'm grateful but a tinge sad. I grew up in Cleveland Ohio, and 'society' has done a terrible number on the people.

I lived in the north part of this valley for 5 years and it was home. This man’s family is truly an institution in the valley. They were there at the beginning.everything he said is spot on. I finally had to leave because I was one of those workers who couldn’t make enough to afford to make it my home. It was devastating to feel pushed from there by the folks moving over from Jackson hole, driving the rental prices up to unsustainable levels. I had a degree and permanent state job in my field and still couldn’t make ends meet. It was incredibly difficult to accept and have to leave. So glad his family is living their purpose and raising those amazing kids. God bless!

I'm so sorry you had to leave where you loved to be the most. That's the way it usually happens though isn't it? Or they come in to "escape" the rat race " and want to change the peaceful and friendly and hardworking, to what they left! It's sad and terrible at the same time. As someone from Idaho, I expected this to be a video about running from society. But I am pleasantly surprised that these folks seem to have a friendly, charitable view of their neighbors that is unfortunately becoming rare in these rural areas. I think what he said about the commoditization of peace and quiet is spot on- people buy rural homes and move there to get away from the "hustle and bustle" of the city, but completely miss the fact that friendship and community are what made rural life great to begin with. Though IMO friendship and community are what make life great no matter where you live, urban or rural.

Dunno, mixed feelings... escaping to your own 'Private Idaho' is one thing, but deliberately raising insular kids within that fantasy is another... kinda like religious indoctrination, no matter how 'wholesome' that may be. Most LDS folks are some of the kindest people I’ve ever met.
We moved to the woods when our son was small. We even educated him ourselves. It's a real blessing to raise kids away from the toxic cities and suburbs..

my country (The Netherlands) does not even allow home education. it is becoming a true 'democratic' corrupt shithole here. First 6 months of 2022 they even imported more than 1% of population newcomers from anti-Western countries. Western Europe is kinda lost man.

I grew up in a town of about 500 people. Plenty of toxic people and ideas floating around there too.
I love what he mentioned about doing something with a purpose and goal. It seems they put a lot of thought in their purpose for why and how they want to raise their kids.

I live in a 55+ community (and yes, I'm 54 and a half...lol) One of our maintenance guys, who always arrives looking professional (he doesn't have to) and I have had the great pleasure of talking with him and I wouldn't have known, but he is part of the LDS Church. He met his wife while doing a mission for the church. I live in the greater Boston area and I wouldn't think that I'd find a caring person like this. He home schools his children and is the hardest worker I know. I often tease him about the number of children he has. He's nearing the VonTrapp status. lol 🤣
In the LDS Church, the first commandment the Lord gave Adam/mankind is to multiply and replenish the earth. There's also a verse in the LDS scriptures that says if parents don't raise their kids in righteousness then the sins of those kids will be on the heads of the parents. Also sprinkle in the belief of the eternal family and doing baptisms for the dead etc. The LDS Church summed up in one word would be "family"

These boys remind me of my childhood in Appalachia. There's an innocence being lost in this country and as we see by your videos people are searching for it, reconnecting with it.

So glad you pointed it out! I'm glad we didn't grow up with social media. If we took pictures, we actually took the roll of film to have it developed and what you got was what you got, and it was always fun to pick them up at the Photo-mat or drug store. We used to take off and go camping for days at a time and weren't worried about a thing. We knew how to read a map and change a flat tire or even rig something to hobble our way to get to a place that could replace a hose or spark plugs. Now we can't even wrench on our own vehicles. We are the last of the Mohicans, or at least I thought we were until I found this. I think it's great to see the kids having their own fun without being glued to some kind of device! My best friend grew up like this too. Always learning. Always playing outside. Always being taught how to live by his parents. They were poor but rich as well. We loved going to their place.
Amazing to see my hometown on RUclips, I live a few streets south of AJ and love seeing his horses and wagon on the bike path. We really are blessed to be in this type of community and live this lifestyle. Love the video.

@Kendra Middleton Williams Peter has found his niche (found a suitable position in life OR .....a specialized segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service.), and although he is college educated, as am I, he continues to go above and beyond his "degree," I'm not saying don't go to college......God no, but college does help. Keep in mind that Peter is very educated when it comes to how to interact with a person or a culture.....I'm not sure where one learns this....I'm guessing (just guessing) through his experiences. He is open to all (no judgement zone) and he is learning as he goes, which makes him wonderful. (studies show that in addition to pizza, compliments towards a peripatetic person can lead to EOSB. (Early Onset of Santenello Baldness) 👨🏻🦲
@@gwgrote5 the ability to communicate with people as he does is a deep, intrinsic understanding that we must meet people where they are if we want to truly get to know and understand them. We share this skill, and it is partly built by living overseas in other countries and gaining new and different perspectives.

He met a girl in Norway.....he was too shy to advance that meeting. But not all is lost because he's learned that there may be people outside of the US that he is more compatible with.

Hit the nail on the head. This generation of kids are by no means taught the reality of life, taught to demand what they want, and are completely consumed by the internet and becoming popular no matter the cost to others. They have no structure, no guidance, and no respect. I tell you Peter the family here makes me jealous because they have the drive to be good honest people. Such a great video.

Those kids remind me of me and my brothers growing up on the family ranch as the 4th generation.
Nowadays, our parents, who wait patiently to become great grandparents, still live in the old ranch house that my great grandparents built. All us boys have raised the 5th generation out here and we're waiting to become grandparents.
Wouldn't trade this life for anything.

I have Amish friends in Kentucky and I so respect how they raise their children to be self sufficient .

This is one of the most impressive lifestyles I’ve seen in a long time. Everyone should take lessons from this family! We have the same problems here with outsiders coming in and posting everything and wanting all others out. Most small towns have stagnant economics from the corruption of the old money power structure that have pushed many lower caste families into destitute and hopelessness with permanent glass ceiling unless they are lucky enough to escape, losing their home towns, becoming migrants for better lives. Boomers have been one of the most toxic and selfish generations, as they die off never generations finally, possibly have some opportunities. Federal state ngos and corporations like community development organizations putting billions of dollars directly into the pockets of minorities to start business anywhere they like so there is going to be intense change. Can’t say it’s going to be any worse than it has been, more like improvement.

We’re dealing with the same population explosion here in northwest Montana on a MUCH larger scale. We’re the fastest growing community in the country. It’s frustrating for locals who are 5th/6th generation here trying to survive and raise kids. I also fully understand what he was saying about the fabric community being diluted by new people moving in that have no idea what it’s like to be apart of the community. It’s frustrating and frankly it’s sad. Property that my family farmed and logged have become very high end neighborhoods. What they don’t realize is they all move here and drive the population through the roof. The other big issue is they move here because where they have come from was terrible, but then start to change things here and move the ball towards where they came from.
exactly. Same in KY. They come here and will get bored quick. They turn to local governments and eventually your taxes start going up and you find they brings many of the problems they were running from.

So shitty, ive lived in washington state all my life, grew up in the sticks and everywhere around me sucks and i would like to move out to montana where i have family but i think i wont, too much californians and such moving there for my comfort
I love watching your videos. Very educational. If you ever want to do one on rural life in South Africa - the REAL South Africa - not just the tourist Cape - I would love to have you here. We live in rural KwaZulu Natal. My husband and I take in vulnerable and special needs children and adults, most of whom fall through the cracks in our Social System. We work in our township where the needs are huge. Right now people haven't had water for 4 weeks. Some of the people haven't had water for 7 months. This is the real South Africa. Millions of people live like this.

As a native Mountain Californian, I felt what he was saying when people are coming up from the cities from overcrowding with lots of money and making the country very expensive to live in. This same thing is happening with the Bay Area locals moving up the hill. Just applied to a small tiny 1 bedroom 1 bathroom after a day it was on the market and there were 20 applicants. 😔
That's bc there's not enough balance. America didn't make it reasonable to live in one place & work in another. Or even embrace the village aspect of raising a family. America did its citizens a disservice to not adapt work from home until 2020. Even pushing for it to go back to work now. Too many people want to abandon others for their own selfishness.

thats because American cities aside from a handful like Manhattan in New York are just big suburbs lol. Miles and miles of single family homes. No public transit, only freeways, which means everyone has to have their own car. Of course there would be a breaking point with that type of capacity design.

Another great video story! Here is my take: Liberty and Freedom rest on a foundation of Personal Responsibility. You don't have to live on a farm to take personal responsibility, or to teach respect and personal responsibility to your children. That can be accomplished in a city or in the country.

The land in that area of IDAHO is unbelievably awesome. When our Texas family visited, I think our mouths were open half the time in awe!!! Super nice homesteaders and ranchers too!!
Yes! There are actually quite a few transplanted Texans now in that area of Idaho like my ranching sis and her family!
I love these kinds of videos. I was raised in an urban environment, but my grandfather would occasionally whisk me away to the countryside for weekends or during school breaks. Those times were mainly spent in the garden, where he encouraged me to assist with tending to the lawn and crops. Those moments have become my most treasured childhood memories. There's a certain quality of life inherent to rural areas that eludes even the wealthiest urban settings. The family depicted in this video possesses a wealth of a different kind. My aspiration is to bring up my own children in the tranquility of the countryside, surrounded by the embrace of nature and animals. I'm hopeful I'll be able to make that dream a reality.
My mom grew up in this valley. Her parents are buried there as is my father. It is one of the most beautiful places I know. It has changed so much since I was a kid that it is hard to recognize. I'm glad to see these people living this lifestyle.
I love this family and their lifestyle. It's sad that so many are moving out there as it does change the atmosphere over time.
I looked up some of their names ( 34:20 ) in my family tree and not surprised to see we are distant cousins. I could tell you exactly how we are related (in multiple ways). Everybody should do their family history / genealogy. The more ancestors you have alive, the easier it is, so don't wait.
I'm so thankful we raised our daughters in our rural, isolated ranching community ❤

I grew up like this somewhat in a small town in Idaho. I live in Ohio now and I still am raising my kids like this. There is no better way. It’s so fulfilling and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Awesome!
Just try to imagine if all families live like this, I cannot imagine how beautiful our world would be.
I lived in Idaho and thought it the best ever. Very nice familty and kids. It makes us happy to see family as well adjusted as this one.

What an incredible, genuine family. I like what they have going on, that their kids are welcome to the rest of the world, but they clearly love it best where they are. Eatin' pizza, riding horses, licking salt blocks. This is what I like to see when it comes to modern and old school blending perfectly in a lifestyle. I believe people should be more active, and honestly these guys are doing it right. Doesn't matter your religion, race, sexual orientation. All that matters is being a good person. Finding happiness with the things you do should be your first priority, and living a life like this makes it feel more worthwhile. I'd love to personally have horses, work my own, have some land. Some people are just too poor to make it a reality.
One day I'll have a horse and me and that beast will do everything together. Trust and respect.

I grew up in downtown Los Angeles in a neighborhood where we had this kind of community. All the neighbors knew each other and the kids. The adults looked out for the kids. If one of my brothers was doing something that they weren't suppose to be doing, my mom would get a call. People shared their crops from their trees with each other. I now live in another major city & we have the same community in my neighborhood. We all know each other and looked out for one another. Be it the seniors that walk around the block, kids that ride their bikes or the dogs that get out of the yards to wonder. People can have this life in a big city, too. We just need to reach out to each other & be a community.
My grandfather had a team of working Clydesdales. They were the most majestic creatures I have ever had the chance to live life with.

I love to stay out from city...we left london and came to Lithuania northern area...sometime we live in city but more we love to live in village house,,organic own grown food and honey...can't get in cities and from factories..
Pando, in Utah, appears as a large forrest of aspen trees (but is actually one individual network/ organism) & is the largest single organism known to man- weighing apx. 13 million pounds & taking up 106 acres. (I believe what Peter was referring to when talking about the Aspen Trees).

I always like hearing down-to-earth people talking. As a kid, I used to live in a small village, helping with the livestock, playing by the river, fishing etc. We didn't care about fancy clothes, expensive shoes or gadgets. We didn't own expensive cars, in fact we had a 2-door pickup track and we travelled with that whenever it was necessary. And we were 5 people, and very happy! This creates a solid and responsible person from a young age. Great people, and what a great video. Greetings from Greece.

I grew up learning from my grandmother..example Get water from the water whole warm it under wood outside to bath, save the water to water the dirt so it won’t be dusty. We had a shed where we used the bathroom...good times. I learned a lot from her. Miss her.

This one hit me right in the feels. What an incredible family - and something that struck me over any of the outdoors/working the land aspects of their lifestyle, is that they spend time together as a family. I feel like I see so many families that don't seem to know each other well or even truly LIKE one another these days and seeing a family work AND play together gives me such joy.
I honestly think it comes down to the parents' *intentions*. You don't see children being raised with actual intention and purpose. Too many just throw their hands up and don't even try to connect with their kids, let alone serve them with love. They serve them with tradition and a "because I said so' attitude that really angers & hampers a person's self-worth.
what he said about people being like treasure boxes really opened my eyes. you never know what is going on inside unless you get to know them. that was a great way to put it wow

My son just sent this video to me because we own a second home in Victor, ID. ( we bought before prices went up so high)It was a joy to watch this! I can say that the people in the valley are the loveliest, friendliest most welcoming people I have ever met. My husband and I cannot wait to retire there and become a full time part of the community.
I just wish more people had the access to raise their kids this way, they will not be fretting over social media or struggling with their mental health at a terribly young age, I feel recently the people in my life are genuinely missing how the world was even just 20 years ago and with the madness of social media and so little personal interactions i hope more old traditions return.
I love this family’s ethics and keeping to there old ways as much as possible.

Excellent video. Living in Alberta Canada I can relate. The influx of people moving here and living rurally has changed not only the prices on land/homes and affordability but also they come here with their millions and scoop up all the land along with traditions and morals. Hopefully there will be more kids like this raised to give some peace to this crazy world.
This seems to be a trend all over the west. In 1973 a few of us drove from Utah to Alberta and it was mostly open space. In fact, no one was at the border station as it was a Sunday morning. We took pictures next to the large stone marker and proceeded to Raymond (my friend's hometown,) Lethbridge, and on to Calgary. Nowadays you need a passport, etc. just to get across! All over Alberta, Montana, Idaho, and Utah the rural live is being supplanted by wealthy newcomers looking for a slower pace. Let's hope they respect the lifestyle as well.
I grew up several miles south of here on a dairy farm. It wasn't exactly like this, but this video, and these people, are very nostalgic for me right now.
Love the lifestyle! Thanks for sharing your family. I lived in Caldwell for 2 years in '70 & '71. Hated leaving. Been in many states as a trucker and Idaho is so unique from the surrounding states. Parents were both born in Idaho and met in SLC in the 50's.. My Great Grandfather had a general store in Teton with a pickle barrel. My grandfather used to go there after school and get a pickle hehe. Must have been the early 30's? I drove a potato truck a couple of seasons out of Mud Lake and Rexberg. Great memories! I met Chris LaDoux at the Stinker in Mountian Home (Name Dropping!) He was my partners friend. He gave me a cassette of his (then) new album... yes, cassette! hahaha. Idaho is the best place to raise Family. Still have an Uncle that's been in Montpelier since the early 80's. Stuck in L.A. for a couple years more then I'm moving to Tornado Alley. Or maybe Idaho!
I love how smart and thoughtful all these people are. Driven, understanding and peaceful. I love to see see young boys that are helpful, respectful and knowledgeable. That's a sign of good parenting.
27:44 I met a guy at his farm who's family had owned that land since before TN was a state. He said he could no longer afford the liability insurance of having cows on his land since subdivisions being built around him (and the kids that come with that) because kids could possibly crawl thru the barb wire to pet or play with the cows and get hurt.
That is sooooo sad.
Love this one, Peter! The term free-range kid is sad. As a child of the 70's, I experienced the freedom to be outside all day in the summer/weekends in a semi-rural midwestern area. We went home for lunch when we got hungry, family dinner at 6 pm. Was this the last generation to experience such freedom? I get that it's probably not realistic in many cities. Great to see there are still people trying to raise kids to be capable independent adults. Living with a purpose is a wonderful value to teach and share. 😊❤
