Good on you for doing the difficult thing. I'm a vet, & everyone at the practice has to make that same decision every few weeks when we get a cute stray in. If we have a recently bereaved client they often ask us to keep them in mind, so most times we manage to skip the shelter. Seeing them back for their vaccines after they've settled into their new family is something else 😍

She is really so so sweet and she will def find a good home really soon. You are definitely doing the right thing if you know you aren't in a place to take care of a dog right now! Caring for them is a LOT of time and money, and yes they are literally a child. I work at an animal hospital and some people are really caught off guard by this.

thank you for doing the responsible thing with the dog! I've been working in animal activism since I was young and I see far too many stories of people taking animals in irresponsibly and not taking care of them, then leaving them out on the street. you've given her a great chance by bringing her to a no-kill place.
on a more personal note, you're a huge inspiration to me and some of my friends. seeing a young adult queer person living their life is amazing and gives us a lot of hope. thank you and never underestimate the impact you have on queer teens!

Totally feel you about the dog. Sad to not keep her, but my partner and I absolutely adore cats - and for 10 years we didn't adopt a cat because it wouldn't have been responsible for us to. We weren't financially stable, we didn't have reliable housing, it was absolutely not fair on a real animal for us to adopt when we can't actually guarantee we can take care of it.
Now we have three cats!
And then shit happened and now we're poorer than we were before, but we're still able to look after them. Pets are a responsibility. An animal is depending on you and you HAVE to be able to look after them properly. It's not fair on them and it's not fair on you if you can't.
It's so much more responsible to not take a pet when you know you can't fullfill all it's needs. You did what you could and I'm sure that this gorgeous doggo will find a loving home ❤

I have a 5 month old puppy. Adopted her when she was 9 weeks old. She is great! Right now, she is my little sidekick/companion. Eventually she will be my alert system (I'm hearing impaired) when I take her on the road (bicycling, might build a pedal car instead... with a bicycle camper).
"you don't know if you want to be them or want to be with them" ... this thought was literally part of my bi awakening 😅 I then realised that not every straight woman wants to be WITH a woman soooo
Mak, you are very responsible for not adopting a dog lightly. It's life-altering and anyone who doesn't see it that way has either never had a pet, has an extremely low-maintenance pet, or is not giving their pet the attention they need. Thank you for taking that decision seriously! Good luck finding her a home!

I think that’s very mature of you, if you know you won’t be able to take care of her well, then don’t commit. There are a lot of dog owners that don’t provide their pet with good exercise or diet or attention etc etc, so try not to let the negative thoughts win. I think you did a good thing.

It’s crazy to me to imagine the way people abandon animals or as accessories becuase since I was born I’ve had a house full of pets. Ever since I was six I’ve owned a dog that is “mine”. And now I own a dog and a cat that are just an amazing part of my life that brings me joy. I’ve always easily taken care of animals and it hurts to know others don’t view their pets like me!

So I'm a Sophomore in High-school and today I came out to one of my friends. We have been on spring break over here in Eldo and I have had a lot of time to think. I was watching some of your old videos and listening to the "Chosen Family" Podcast and they really helped me. Like I always kinda knew but I was scared. What you said about the edict is true but it’s not cheep to chip and fix your pets, and if it’s a rescue they may be busy getting the meds and vacations up to date before that so the dog can stay healthy, most of the time to dog is chipped though
