  • Smite 2 is almost here and the entire Smite community is hesitantly excited for what seems to be a beautiful new rendition of the unique third person MOBA, but there are three major issues with Smite 1 that have absolutely nothing to do with gameplay and everything to do with how Hi-Rez handles their ranked three-lane mode - Conquest that NEED to be fixed in order to make sure that new players stick around in Smite 2.

    This video was honestly extremely well edited and paced. Would love to see more like this as smite 2 approaches.

    Chipper is so underrated man, great video with well thought out points. I hope HiRez is willing to consider changes like these.

    I know this video is way different than my others, but I felt like I had a perspective that I hadn't heard from anyone in the public discourse over changes for Smite 2. I also purposely didn't discuss any balance or gameplay because frankly I'm not qualified for that

    So this is what you’ve been cooking up in the shadows. This was a banger though honestly, jumped into a whole different style of video and it didn’t feel like it was new to you at all.

    I agree with all of this. I’ve casted with some Spectators that flip into the third person perspective for things like a Ne Zha going for a gank + ult and it just feels so much more exciting to watch.

      I feel like it also gets you invested in the players/teams themselves. When I watch someone do something sick, it makes me want to root for them and then I want to see them succeed so I’m more likely to watch again

    I had no idea it took that long to get into ranked games. I’ve put in about 350+ hrs and I still couldn’t get in if I wanted too. I do think that Hi-Rez is listening to feedback pretty well so far. The leaks from the newest alpha test say that combat blink is the new starter and you can switch for beads if you want for free (good change).
    I think the main thing needed now is more interesting god changes and fixes to the current Smite 2 map and it will start to look good.

      Yeah it took a friend of mine a similar amount of time to get access to Ranked but I wasn't sure if he was a good example so I decided to use the most recent one which was 170 for level 30 w/ xp boosters.

  • @5sm_bulove

    I agree with all three points! I myself tried to get a dozen people I know to play the game. Now none of them play. One person leveled up to level 30, but when he found out that he had to level up 20 characters, he went back to Dota2.
    As for the 3rd point about SPL, I didn't even think about it, but it's fucking true!

      In my case, it's hardly the limited number of players in a ranked game. Rather, it's the lack of convenient guides inside the game. Because people who have just entered the game and gone through the tutorial get a lot of hate for not going to the jungle for buffs, not doing rotations, and so on

    • @chipperpat
      @chipperpat  Месяц назад

      I actually agree with this a ton too. I feel like there’s a lack of material for teaching the general game not just in game but also on RUclips.

      I had a similar experience with League! I leveled up to lv 30 and then noticed I had still to buy a bunch of champs to play ranked and didn't go back to it for like 2 years.

    Hey, you got yourself an Abo by this really well made video.
    I am one of the new players, trying some Smite before Smite 2 releases. I have a lot of experience in other Mobas but a few years ago for various reasons have a little bit of an anxiety issue which stops me from playing a lot of Solo Ranked etc. I absolutely cant stand getting flamed or targeted or even it happening to other players. That started after I (fortunately) already played a lot of League of Legends, so that I exclusively play in (competetive) Teams rather than SoloQ.
    I dont really have any friends willing to try Smite though, so Is ticked to the Co-Op Mode vs Medium bots and Arena.
    Hows the Smite Community with new players? Any reccomendations where I can get into Groups that are friendly and play the game even with Newbies? I do know exactly what I want in that I do enjoy my few champions (Discordia and Hel mainly) but I really wasnt able to queue up vs real players yet.

      I'm really excited to see new people showing an interest in Smite and I think the larger community is too! I'm not sure as far as resources to play with new people. I know in the past, people in my community discord have seen if anyone was available to play, but it's not super active tbh. I know in some of my friends' discords like Brutal Maglinni Time or Boom555, people play together as well. So some stream community discords may be a good place to start?

    I've been saying smite esports camera sucks since 2019, why do I have to watch a separate pov to get cool strategic gameplay when they could broadcast it live? I wish Hi-rez could give us a behind the scenes for casting and broadcasting so we could see where the issues lie. We've seen they know how to do camera work in the live patch notes show, so there must be something to do with the smite 1 engine.

      Yeah I know the spectator mode for Smite 1 is a little wonky so maybe that’s a cause. Hopefully if so, Smite 2 will help solve it

    Dam didnt realize there were so many barriers to getting to play smite ranked. That has to change. Also totally agree that they need to find a way to allow parties to play ranked just to try to limit the toxicity somewhat. Hopefull more friends in your part should mean less toxic teammates to flame you, which is a huge deterrent for new players like you mentioned.

    There is only 1 core problem with your 1st point. Ranked starts at 1500 mmr, which is gold. The excuse for this was that the expectation of new players finishing the requirements would put them at the average mmr which is 1500, however that is not true, the actual reason for it is a part of a cushioning system. The tutorial portion of Smite is also probably the biggest barrier to people transitioning into Ranked and also the biggest skill gap generator and game knowledge generator, but that's a separate discussion. Matchmaker for ranked functions similarly to how it works in OW2. Matches are made to be as equal as possible and it also tries to stop people from spiraling into the bottom ranks as much as possible meaning it takes a long time to reach your true rank, so like it or not you will be ruining people's matches since especially since it also causes over inflation in rank. Basically everything above silver 1 and bellow diamond 1 is not a true rank ladder and the disparity in ability is huge. 5 man ranked was removed mostly because of Lower ranked players complaining that it's unfair. Otherwise great points, though for number 3 it's wise to point out Hirez decided to neglect the SPL completely because they taught that chasing a casual community was more worth it, which no no it wasn't lot's of problems stem from there as well.

    • @chipperpat
      @chipperpat  Месяц назад +1

      I had intended to mention this in the video but evidently I left it out: In that dev review that I showed in the video, Hi-Rez announced that they will not be starting ranked in the middle MMR for Smite 2 and it will instead start at the bottom. So this is a valid point for the current game state, but it shouldn't be a problem moving into Smite 2.

    Where the hell did you come from?
    I was just thinking about how annoying it is not being able to play ranked. Not because I am afraid to lose, but because I don't want to ruin other people's experiences.

    • @chipperpat
      @chipperpat  Месяц назад +2

      Exactly! I feel like the mental barrier of a new player not feeling they’re ready is already a huge hurdle to overcome even without all of the bonus restrictions

    I hope to god they'll also make it so that Smite 2 has the same TTK as pre 9.5 Smite 1. The latest flash playtest had a half assed version where health was lower than 9.5 but higher than Smite 1. Hi-Rez needs to learn the concept of "if it isn't broken, don't fix it".
    It also makes the SPL very boring. Nobody wants to watch a farming fest. Going back to season 3 etc. SPL matches feels like a whole different world. Objectives are squishier so there is a much bigger incentive to fight over them in the early mid game unlike Smite 1 where it's just 5v5 Stardew Valley for the first 25 minutes. Keep low TTk or Smite 2 never makes it big.

      Yeah, agree. I was so pumped when they said that their philosphy was going to be "SMITE 1, but STRICTLY better", and now they've changed so many things that worked perfectly before.

    Ranked mode does NOT matter. Ranked/Competitive environment does not provide you with new players it is the other way around, if the game is fun to play then you will get new comp players. So many people get this thing other way around that somehow ranked mode constitues what a good game/success is.

    • @chipperpat

      Ranked may not attract new players to the game but it absolutely keeps them around once they’ve started which was the point of this video

      Well the Beta is in July which is next month and it won’t be limited access on the weekends after that so call that what you want. Also the idea is to give feedback before the launch and all of the problems named are actually with how they handled Smite 1 lol

      @@chipperpat Yup. Getting behind alpha/beta labels in live-service games is quite dishonest. Once the game is live 24/7, it's on.

    There are bad arguments here but the worst is comparing video games to drugs making it look like addiction is cool. Had to stop there. Probably also ignores subjects about the gaming industry that deserve more attention.
