  • Discover Woodcock Street Baths (Birmingham UK). This video was recorded on 10 September 2021.
Woodcock Street Baths - now known as the Sir Doug Ellis Woodcock Sports Centre - is the oldest operational swimming pool in Birmingham (1902). This guided tour will show how Aston University, who took over this grade 2 listed building in 1980, have refurbished and redeveloped the building into a modern sports centre available for staff and students of the University but also the local community. The swimming pool which retains most of its original features was constructed in 1902 and other parts of the building were constructed around the original pool in 1921 and again in 2011. Thank you for the time you take to walk and create these videos. It’s quite something to view many parts of the city that I have known but never really visited. Thank you for encouraging me to go and discover the city and it’s interesting past.

My Dad won diving medals here in 1940's and my Mum used to use the bathing facilities.

@@citiesthroughmyeyes No, my parents moved away from the area before I was born. My Grandpatents lived in Lawrence Street until early sixties when they died. Lawrence Street is to the left hand side of the baths.
Apparently the baths had a very high diving board.

We had the same looking baths in Grove Lane, Handsworth. Still visible is the Victorian entrance in Grove Lane.

I never had the chance to see the inside of Grove Lane swimming baths. I hope one day.

Hello HR Kennedy, thank you for your feedback 🙂 I had the feeling you were from the US. I did have a look at your playlist sometime ago... Do you have any connection to Bham?

Nice informative video - the baths look very well cared for, having had a lucky escape. Interesting aside about the communal laundry - certainly more efficient than everyone washing by hand. Btw the title 'Sir' goes with the first name, not the surname so Sir Doug Ellis would be 'Sir Doug' not 'Sir Ellis.'

Hello Chris! 🙂 The story of these baths is very interesting. You taught me something today, 'Sir + first name' and I'll keep that in mind 😉. I hope you're doing good.

Hi Joseline! Did you stop doing street walks in different areas or do you film this as a change? Me personally I liked the street walks and think there are so many more areas to explore. Or what is your plan?

Hello Abu Ismail 99, no I haven't stopped. I attended a lot of Bham Heritage week events in early September so that's why you see all these videos...
I wanted to film Manchester last Saturday since I was there. Unfortunately it was raining like crazy.
I am currently working on some Bham Suburbs past & present too so I am a bit all over the place right now... But I will definitely make some new walking tours this week if the weather is compliant.
