- Messiaen wrote “Abîme des oiseaux” (Abyss of the Birds) for clarinetist Henry Akoka in 1939. It was intended to be a solo clarinet work. The rest of the quartet was composed later, when Messiaen, Henry Akoka, and two other musicians were prisoners in a war camp during WWII. Later, in 1941 the solo clarinet piece became the 3rd movement of the Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time).
Messiaen writes:
"The abyss is Time with its sadness, its weariness. The birds are the opposite to Time; they are our desire for light, for stars, for rainbows, and for jubilant songs."
Recorded live in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on April 19, 2021.

Outstanding!
Bravo!
I'm curious about the lighting choices. Was the color green intentionally connected to the birdsong?
