  • This video explains some of the technological advances introduced within the USB IF’s Type-C Specification then shows how these can be designed into practical products. Four application areas are explored: host design, cable design, peripheral design and power adapter design. Working prototype of Reference Designs are presented for each application area along with design and debug tools.

2:54 "This is going to be an exciting ride." has to be one of the funniest things I've heard, just because of the tone. But yeah, I'm really looking forward to this video teaching me all the stuff I ought to know about USB.

GREAT JOB! Fascinating. Thx for the insight. Yes, I'm a bit "late for the party" as I just bought a laptop w/ USB Type-C (Thunderbolt 3-enabled 2018 MacBook Pro). This is indeed "exciting"/"fun" - well, at least for a nerd like me (w/ a BSEE w/ emphasis in computers/robotics) 8-)

If yes how do we configure the cc resistors.?

Forgive me for my ignorance here... but from what I gather, it is NOT possible to use the USB type C port on my mobile device to both transmit sound to headphones AND transmit data. Is this correct?... or is it possible to transmit an amplified sound sign over two power connections, while reserving the other two to support a powered USB 2.0 compliant application WITHOUT an additional reference board?

    Hello everyone !
Beginner user of our favorite software Wireshark to analyze USB communications, for practical reasons I would like to know how to save the "payload" in the capture file, excluding the USB protocol layers (tokens, PID, handshake ... among other packaging data).
I'm using Linux Mint and my skills about programming ang compilating are very very poor.
    Thanks for your help.

Do I need to connect CC pins for only recharge a lipo battery? I will buy a CC/CV buck regulator to charge my 1s lipo battery with type C usb. The charger is a wall adaptor (5v 2A) so do I need CC1 and CC2 pins?
(I am making a custom pcb)

Can a USB C phone receive a charge while downstream peripherals are plugged into it? I want to plug a few peripherals into a Samsung S9 via a USB hub, and I still want the phone to charge via an external charger. Is this possible?

Yes, a lot of USB-C multi-port adapter will allow you to realize this use case.

    HI
I WANT TO MAKE MY PHONE ONLY CHARGE AT LEAST 0.9-0.8 mA BUT INEED ALSO THAT THE PC WILL NOT RECOGNIZE THE PHONE, DOES IT POSIBLE?

    • @CypressSemi

Hi Stas, if a mobile device is connected to a PC, initially the device will only charge in Dedicated Charging Port (DCP) mode. A DCP is a downstream port that provides power to a portable device, but is not capable of enumerating the portable device. It sources IDEV_CHG (1.5 A) with a voltage of VCHG (4.75 V to 5.25 V), and indicates its type by placing a resistor between its D+ and D- pins with a maximum resistance of RDCP (200 Ω). Typically, D+ and D- are shorted. Usually in mobile devices, you should be given the option to transfer the files which will actually enumerate the device to access the files on the phone. This same scenario also happens with Type-C connected devices. Please let us know of any further questions. Best, Cypress

Nice Insight. I have question. 1) If a Tablet with USB Type C output port is connected to Mac book that needs charging, will the tablet continue charging the laptop till it drains out all its power, or Is there any communication going on between UPF and DPF at regular intervals? 2) Once plugged in can UPF and DPF change their responsibilities ?

    • @CypressSemi
      @CypressSemi  6 лет назад

Hi Subhash, great questions! 1) The USB-C port controllers by themselves will be unaware of battery conditions. But, the device (tablet/notebook) manufacturer or vendor will always implement a power management system in their device which monitors the battery conditions and signals the type-C port controllers to reduce or stop power delivery. So as long as the tablet manufacturer implements a battery management system that monitors battery health and communicates the action to the port controllers, it cannot drain all of its power to the laptop. 2) Yes, the port partners can swap their roles on the run, depending on port capabilities (if both ports have the capability to exchange their roles).
