This A620 Motherboard HANDLES a 7950X....(!)

  • I thought ASrock were joking at Computex when they told me their PRO RS Series boards, even the A620M, could handle the Ryzen 9 7950X. And today we put it to the test. The results are impressive, so much that in a certain scenario it could be better than an X670E with this CPU combination.

    11:31 these results were with a water cooler, let's test with a $20 snowman air cooler.
    13:30 Conclusion, this combo is surprisingly realy good, and there is one benefit over x670e in a certain situation.

      My experience with a 7950x has given me super wonky results. I don't know if it's the ram, the motherboard; Who knows. The AM5 platform is just less stable than AM4. RPCS3 definitely crashes more on the same settings on AM5 unless I dial back memory speed, and even then, some weird stuff still happens. AMD should really look into bringing out a B750/X770 variant. I'd assume that A620 maybe a little more mature, but that's just me guessing.

    This newer motherboards are using Drmos as mosfets. And I think they are getting pretty cheap, cheaper than conventional highside lowside 2+2 mosfet combo. I hope amd release a 610 chipset that would cost $50-$70 to support the adaption of new APUs.

What i like about the pro rs versions is that you have an easy removable cmos battery, which seems to be hidden under some heatsink or cover with the riptide, but i'm curious about the difference in performance. I own a steel legend 650E for my main rig and i'm very pleased with it. But these asrock matx boards look like a great option for a secondary smaller matx and smaller budget build.

    12:30 - Have you ever tried the 6-pipe Snowman? When I bought mine, the 6-pipe was the same price, so I figured it was a no brainer. I also wonder how an older 'good' air cooler would fare with these setups, what these days are cheap 2nd-hand, like a VenomousX or TRUE You should also try the 5-heatpipe Thermalright Assassin King 120 SE, seems to work very well (I've bought several), in the UK it's only 16 UKP new (less than 20 USD).
    That A620 is very interesting, finally some decent pricing, and it shows one doesn't need the crazy high end to achieve good results. It's a bit more expensive in the UK (135 UKP), but getting there slowly. As others have said, a good match for a 7600 or 7500F, etc.

    I bought the MSI a620m-e from Amazon for $80 after tax, paired with R5-7600g, 32Gb 5800, it rips everything at good settings, I'm very happy with the combo. MSI bios is enough for overclock settings, xmp, i undervolted and overclocked with the auto setting and the power draw is consistent under 65w, usually averages 55w under gaming conditions. When it's time to upgrade I'll only need to change cpu and gfx card. My RX5700 XT OC is perfect for the AAA I'm currently playing, and getting a consistent 60-150 fps in starfield at High 1080p settings. Saving up for a 7600xt in six months.

    With the way many of the early AM5 boards were being priced, it's nice to see some options that are a little closer to Earth. This is largely achieved through use of the more budget-oriented chipsets, and scaling down the PCIe 5 support. How much benefit will most of us see from a PCIe 5.x SSD or GPU? Little to none.
    I am constantly surprised by the quality you get from Asrock products, often for very low prices. Well done Asrock.

    I actually use iGPU as my video out even for gaming on my 7950X. It basically behaves like laptop with dGPU and iGPU to save power on desktop. iGPU can run all desktop tasks including decoding video and rendering pages no issue at all. When I fire up game dGPU kicks in and there is no difference. I might lose a bit of performance, but I couldn't care less since I am running Radeon Chill to limit my frames and power usage anyway 🙂

    • @nevernicemeadow
      @nevernicemeadow 10 месяцев назад +1

      yup. exchanged my 5800x for an 5700G for the iGPU to use hybrid graphics. With multi monitor setups and stuff like microsoft teams open, zoom, office programs, IDEs, browsers, etc..., my dGPU used to draw 70 Watts (1080TI) or 30-60 Watts (RX 6800) constantly.
      now with the iGPU, my dGPU sits fully idle with 5Watts the 8-10 hours i work at home.
      btw. on top of that, the monolithic design of the 5700G makes it draw constantly 20 Watts less than its chiplets counterpart.

    • @Monsicek
      @Monsicek 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@nevernicemeadow yeah, I spent quite a bit of time tweaking my 7950X, idles around 21W at 6000MHz memory. 5900X was idling about same. But running some video pushes it to 40-50W range. APUs are great for your use case, props for making smart decision. Most ppl dont care or dont know 🙂 But this might be over as even new AM5 APU are going to be likely chiplet design with i/o die and it's over. Was hoping to ditch my 7950X and get some nice monolithic APU and push the memory into 7000+ range for low latency.
      @Tech YES City This is good tip for cool content nobody really knows about, use 7000 iGPU to save quite a bit of power. I am not sure why you disable the GPU where in fact it's power saver!

      I thought the strix point APUs are still coming to Desktop and Feature Up to 12 cores, 16 CUs and are monolithic? Maybe i am wrong?
      Fyi. When working, even with RUclips running on one Monitor my 5700g just sipps ~15-20 Watts when in Power saving mode (max 3750MHz). My while setup includin 1x24"1080p and 1x27"1440p uses now 80-100w while working comparerd to 5800x at 100-200w depending on the mood of dGPU running in powerstate0 or powerstate1

    Most people over-buy on motherboards. That being said, some of the cheap ones can really give you a horrible experience as a PC gamer. For instance, I have an Asrock H77M-HDV that will throttle the CPU fan to 100% as soon as it hits 65C. I ended up having to put an overkill CPU cooler on the thing to keep it reasonably quiet. Also, watch your PWM headers and pay attention to whether they are 3-pin or 4-pin. Little things like this can ruin your experience.

      You won't be able to get 230 watts on a620. That's the maximum asrock were allowed (by AMD) to push it on a620. I believe there was a cap in before that of 120W. So technically they are going above the a620 limit here.
