If I'm going to mask, I'm going to use acrylic or graffiti paint Nick. Dang paint works the best for me on wood. I did like the entire process video!
Nick,,,No need for laser dark,just use the borax mix...Not only will it be black,you can also engrave at a much higher speed...Also,no need for masking...All you need is a clear coat at the end to seal it in.

If masking it try dye and an air brush or small spray gun. I Used powdered fabric and leather dye mixed with alcohol on a wood keepsake box that looks like a stack of books and the colors came out amazing. Wish I could post a picture here.

I bought a laser cutter about a year ago, and still haven't done anything. lol
Why not just use a borax pre-treat instead of laser dark?
Because I don’t want to? This process is much easier and more consistent.

Just an fyi the reason you're bookmark is curved is most likely cause you didn't clearcoat the back of the bookmark. When you only do one side there is tension only on one side.
I did clear coat the back. 👍🏻👍🏻
