Victorian Clara was so amazing. I really do wish she had become the companion (not least because it would have been nice to have a non-modern companion for once).
As no one else has mentioned this, I'll point out the actress who played Francesca, also played young Lily Potter in Snapes memories from Deathly Hallows Pt 2. Having Clara be the first companion to say, "It's smaller on the outside," is actually a very sneaky way of distinguishing her from other companions, and highlighting that she sees things differently than others. It should also be mentioned that we could have had a very creepy motivation behind her character, as the original plan was for Clara to have been an experiment of the Doctor's, as he attempted to "breed" the perfect companion. Thankfully someone realized that was way out of line for the character and knocked it on the head before it started. It also has to be remembered the Doctor never saw the Clara from Asylum of the Daleks. This is why he didn't react when they met in the street; the voice might have sounded familiar, and the name, but he had no frame of reference for what she looked like.
This is the mid season Christmas special ' The Snowmen', they split Series 6 between the latter half of 2012 and the spring of 2013 😊 (I believe it was to accommodate Moffat's Sherlock commitments?) Just so you're aware - there are EIGHT episodes remaining of this season (after this one) then TWO specials, the 50th anniversary and the post season Christmas special (in that order), that all follow the continuity and are essential to the story! I SERIOUSLY cannot wait for your reaction to the anniversary special - and yes, that is the 50 year celebration of the first episode of classic Doctor Who (23 Nov 1963 - the anniversary released on TV and in select worldwide cinemas 23 Nov 2013)!
The Great Intelligence mentioned here is the big baddie in two classic stories featuring the Second Doctor, The Abominable Snowmen and The Web of Fear (and the independent production Downtime, which introduces the character of Kate Lethbridge-Stewart). The Doctor showing the G.I. a map of the London Underground sets the scene for Web of Fear, which takes place on the Underground.
I don't know if anyone's mentioned it, but there's a mini episode that you can watch on RUclips called P.S. They couldn't film with the actors but they did it all in voiceover and with the storyboard. Def worth watching!
Richard E Grant (Simeon) was also the voice of the animated Doctor in The Scream of the Shalka, long considered to be non-canonical until he shows up in the catalogue of Ncuti's previous incarnations in Rogue..
The new TARDIS set was a 360° standing set at the new Studios "BBC Roath Lock Studios" & was designed by Michael Pickwoad RIP 🙏 The roof was removable to allow camera arms in but the levels gave more room for camera positions throughout. It was nicknamed "The big Pumpkin" & was the first 360° set in New Who not to have a hole at the side. When you walked through those doors you were truly enclosed unlike 15s TARDIS today 😭 I have been on that set & stepping through those doors was just magical being fully enclosed. You really were in the TARDIS!! 🤯
One of my favorite episodes and probably my favorite Christmas episode. I wish we could have kept Victorian Clara, though; it would be interesting having a companion from a different time.
"I'm confused and intrigued" - of course you are. It's Steven Moffat writing it! This was not quite up there with A Christmas Carol for me but it's lots of fun.
43.51 Some parts of this story were shot in Bristol, about an hour by car from the Cardiff studios. The Tardis ladder parts were filmed in Portland Square which you can visit in Google Earth. I think a few other shots were done around Corn Street in the city centre. Doctor Who often uses Bristol, most recently in 'The Giggle'.
This season’s story arc began with the first episode, “Asylum of the Daleks,” in which we were introduced to Clara (Oswin as she was known then) then it got sidetracked as we focused more on the Ponds and their eventual departure and now we’re back to the Clara storyline in “The Snowmen” Christmas episode. The big bad in this episode was an old foe of the Doctor’s, in this case The Great Intelligence, which originally was a sort of vaporous mist that travelled through space, waiting till it could lock itself onto a planet which had a civilisation worth conquering. It was the 2nd Doctor (Patrick Troughton) who first encountered the GI in his second incarnation, in the season 5 story “The Abominable Snowmen,” (1967) whilst visiting a monastery in Tibet in 1935. There he encountered Professor Travers, who was searching for the elusive Yeti, or the Abominable Snowman, but found more than one. The Yeti were in fact sophisticated robots underneath fake Yeti fur, that had been built by the GI who controlled them, as it strived to connect itself to Earth and become a real manifestation. Of course the Doctor defeated it, but twelve weeks later, in the same season, the Yeti and the GI were back for a sequel, “The Web of Fear,” set in the present day London of 1967. It was the GI’s same MO in this story, to manifest itself on Earth and take it over. The whole story was set in and around the London Underground system (the Tube) where the Yeti were flooding the tube tunnels with a killer web fungus, cutting off a bunch of British Army soldiers who are trying to stop them. This story is mostly famous for being the first ever introduction between the Doctor and a very special Army officer - Colonel (as he was in this story) Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, who would meet the Doctor again in the following season 6, newly promoted to Brigadier and being in charge of UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) an organisation set up after the conclusion of “The Web of Fear,” to fight future alien invasions of Earth. Having helped the Brigadier and UNIT defeat a Cyberman take over of Earth in the story “The Invasion,” the Doctor would meet the Brigadier again the following season (Who’s first season in colour) after the Time Lords caught up with him and exiled him to remain on Earth as a punishment. It is there that the Doctor works with the Brig and UNIT as an unpaid scientific advisor, helping them to stop alien invasions and deal with other unusual home grown oddities that could also endanger the Earth. Moffat brought the GI back for two reasons: the first was for the GI to manipulate snow in the same way as it did the Yeti, and the second was to tie this story in with “The Web of Fear,” because at the time of writing this story, Moffat had been privy to the news that the 6 episode story “The Web of Fear,” which had been missing from the BBC archives for decades, had found 5 of its 6 episodes in a dusty vault of an African TV station. Unfortunately, the episode that was missing was episode 3, where the Doctor and Lethbridge-Stewart first meet. It is widely believed that the episode was stolen by someone who knew how important that episode was to fans. Some fans think it’s still out there somewhere, whilst others believe it was destroyed out of spite! So when you see the Doctor in “The Snowmen” hold up the tin with a map of the London Underground network on it, that was Moffat telling the fans, “I know something you don’t, but as I can’t tell you just yet, here’s a massive clue!”
I think the throughline for the first 5 episodes is Amy & Rory's TARDIS/IRL balancing. Now we get to the real arc... BTW: Vastra, Jenny, and Strax DO have a spinoff in audio format, voiced by these same actors. It is called The Paternoster Gang. Enjoyed your enjoyment as always, I have needed the lighter side of life lately, so much appreciation to you both.
I pretty much expect a generation of British drama school trained actors to be the best hero or villain in any production. If you experience anyone who does not need a microphone to be heard on a public stage that projection is skill to master.
This is also a great episode for Sherlockians; I showed it to my scion at our last meeting. Ian McKellen had not yet played Sherlock Holmes, but he would later do so in the movie, _Mr. Holmes,_ based on Mitch Cullin's novel, _A Slight Trick of the Mind._ Richard E. Grant plays Simeon. Although not at the top of his résumé, Grant has played some Sherlockian parts too. Often touted as an actor who should play Sherlock Holmes, he has only essayed the part once, in a 1992 episode of the TV show, _Encounters,_ "The Other Side," in which Conan Doyle goes to a medium and contacts the "ghost" of his fictional detective. In 2002, he played Mycroft Holmes in _Sherlock: A Case of Evil,_ as well as Jack Stapleton in an adaptation of _The Hound of the Baskervilles_ in which Neve McIntosh, who plays Mme. Vastra here, played Beryl Stapleton. Grant also played the Doctor in the Red Nose Day parody for charity, "The Curse of Fatal Death," and a pre-2005-revival but now alternate universe version (since Eccleston is the Ninth Doctor now) of the Ninth Doctor in the animated series, _Scream of the Shalka._ Derek Jacobi (whom you know as Professor Yana) played the Master in this, and a pre-Doctor (and perennial _Doctor Who_ fan) David Tennant had an uncredited role as the Caretaker. Grant had to go in for a photoshoot when RTD asked him to appear as one of the faces of previous Doctors shown in the Series 14/Season 1 (Ncuti) episode, "Rogue," which you've, of course, already seen. So which of his Doctors is now canon and why does Simeon look like him? (A lot of fan debate about this, but probably just a bit of fun.) There is an interview where you can almost feel Moffat getting the idea for the Vastra/Jenny Holmes and Watson. Discussing _Elementary,_ he says that with a female Watson, you should have a female Holmes and that keeping it in the Victorian era would be interesting. There was talk of a _Vastra Investigates_ spinoff, and, although it never materialized on television, there are audio adventures with Vastra, Jenny, and Strax. By the way, you might like to react to the Japanese series, _Miss Sherlock,_ which also features a female Holmes and Watson. It's great and not that many episodes. Miss Montague. Montague Street was where Sherlock Holmes lived before he got the rooms with Watson on Baker Street. Interestingly, Montague Place was where the governess Violet Hunter, who came to consult Holmes about whether she should or should not accept a position of governess, lived at the beginning of "The Copper Beeches."
Clara isn't rich; she's a governess, but it appears like she came from the lower classes and is passing as the sort of gentlewoman fallen on hard times who had to take a job. She was helping out at the bar (possibly a family business or a former employer) for a bit and took time off of the governess job on some pretext. Edit: You allude to this later with the lower-class accent being her "real" one.
7:03 I never get tired of hearing Strax say that. 23:28 lol so frustrating 24:15 lol damn Fun episode albeit confusing first time around. Enjoyed your reaction to it.
These reactions are gold. Such a fresh take on what's going on every time. Of course, the classic feels and questions always come up as well. Knowing what's in the near future, it's so fun and enjoyable hearing the guys' ideas and theories in addition to the more...kinds of comments that make Syntell try to keep it together. Now that is a tough job, lol. Oh what a journey is to come. As for the special, I love all the characters, they all stand out in some way, from funny to just memorable or true bosses. The single word test is so clever and ends up hitting just right. The rest is just so good and tragic. But that is the lot of those who end up in The Doctor's orbit, I guess. Maybe.
We all knew 50th DW was next year, 2013. A first new series movie was to be. So who was going to be in it? Great Intelligence classic who not to be confused with MCU, but similar idea. Episode schedule split started with series 6 and continues with 7. Then time to produce and release theatrical movie in November 2013. Series 8 started fall 2014. Yeah I liked her.

Best "companion" first Tardis entrance ever. When the music and lights hit...
Combination of a first entrance by a companion and a first “entrance” by the audience. And yes, definitely the best.
I still go with Bill. “But they’re made of wood” in dismissing the doctor’s statement of nothing getting through those doors
A particularly appropriate episode for an "'Ello Guvnor!"
