Mamey apple, (Mammea americana), also called mammee apple or Santo Domingo apricot, large tree and its edible fruit (family Calophyllaceae), native to the West Indies and tropical America.

You've had Mamey sapote (Pouteria sapota), which are fantastic. American mamey (tropical apricot, mamey apple) (Mammea Americana) are different and also very good. Tastes like an apricot. I have both trees. The fruit when ripe should be kind of soft, so if the fruit you had was not soft to the touch, then it was not ripe enough and did not have the flavor that it should, it should taste like a cross between a sweet sapote and an apricot

    • @WeirdExplorer

It did have an apricot flavor to it, but that didn't come to mind as much as floral mango when I tried it

That was the fruit I was telling you in another video! This fruit is actually called Mamey and the other one is called Zapote ( the one with the big black shiny seed in the middle of the fruit) However, you just happened to taste one of the Goddess of the tropics! that you ever taste! I miss it a lot!!! In addition, I have to say that Mamey is so tasty that is often attacked by flies and therefore bugs! Just try to choose another one next time! It is a must to repeat!!!

I lived in northern Peru for a year and this was by far and away my favourite fruit. They can be huge - easily 4 times the size of the one you have in the video - I once got about 70 slices of fruit out of it. Taste was definitely a mix between a mango and an apricot. I actually preferred them a little under ripe. Thanks for covering this fruit. Ive been hoping for a long time your would come across it.

Its a mamey, the flavor can be compared to a peach and mango mixed. Its sweet and delicious. Grew up in Nassau Bahamas eating them, trees are everywhere and they grow probably up to 80 feet tall.(also use to seeing with that bruise with trees that tall we wait for the top fruits to drop😂) Perfect summer fruit. The smaller fruits may have a single woody looking seed but the larger fruits have up to three seeds this is more common. Its a completely different fruit from what Americans call mamey. Though I have seen these fruits in South Carolina.

That's one of my favorite fruits from childhood. Two years ago I had it here in the USA (after decades). My husband planted the two seeds and both grew and we have it as an ornamental plant indoors in Winter and put it outside in Summer. Its called "mammey apple" in Trinidad & Tobago. Never knew it could get worms though

As far as I know, no worms that infest fruit are also human parasites. The worms might carry some hitchhiking bacteria that, while not human pathogens either, could cause fruit spoilage. But the biggest health danger in eating fruit from the market is probably that the fruit might have been washed with impure water or handled by people with unclean hands. I don’t know how common that is as a cause of illness, but I like to rinse any fruit with clean(ish) water before I eat it.

    • @WeirdExplorer

I go a step further, especially with covid 19 around here in Jamaica. Everything I get in the market that won't be cooked goes into bleachy water for 20 minutes then gets a thorough rinse. Even lettuce. Not worried about endoparasites, just germs.

Indeed its a Maumee. That's what we call it in Jamaica, it's mostly found in the parish Portland. Has the taste of a peach, passion fruit and a mango. The easiet way to peel is by cutting off the top and bottom, then making small slices from top to bottom. Then removing the skin and then enjoy.

In colombia and the caribbean like jamaica, trinidad, Dominican republic thats mamme or mamey indeed is the original mamey long time ago before sapote wich is completely diferent. People does put nicknames to fruits depending on the region in panama for example. The june plum is called (mangotin) the rose apple called (marañon Curazao) ice cream bean (guaba) and the fruit on this video they called it (tropical apricot) jaja

I had one of these in Puerto Rico many years ago. It reminded me of mango/apricot but also with a very strong vitamin C flavor. I loved it! But that one looks a lot firmer than the one I had.
As for the worms - you won't every get a parasite from a worm in fruit. They're interested in the flesh of the fruit, not of you. ;)

I wouldn’t eat anything with worms, either. I think it was safe enough to eat the side without worms, but like you mentioned, it’s better to avoid any chance of parasites invading you! That would be horrible, and potentially deadly.

Yes, this is a Mamey. The other fruit you are referring to is called zapote. They are from the same family. The zapote's shape is oval while the Mamey is round. The zapote's flesh is reddish while the Mamey is yellowish. They taste totally different. Some people refer to zapote as mamey zapote but that is incorrect. There is only one Mamey and this is it.

Sometimes called a Santo Domingo Apricot, the true Mamee, or mamee PERIOD, or sometimes mamma apple, is very distinct and unrelated to the Pouterias, THE GENUS TO WHICH the mamey sapote, the green sapote, lucuma, sapodilla or chico sapote, caimito, canistel, abiu, et al belong. The word sapote itself is generic, an indigenous word that some have traced to "cold seed", and obviously applied to a vast range of unrelated fruit.

Hey, I live in Puerto Rico and have access to seeds. If anyone is still looking for seeds please reply. I've never distributed seeds before but perhaps it could be a new thing.

You should buy a nice camera and good camera person. It is very hard to see full video since nothing can be seen

Don't click the bell unless you use RSS. The bell sends a notification that a new video is up, and is mostly useful if you've subscribed and you have an RSS aggregation.

You probably have a fruit that was forced ripe because they are a very delicious golden fruit, secondly you don’t have any clue about cutting the fruit thirdly this is the first time I’ve ever seen a Mamey with worms and that’s because you could see the fruit was dropped and smashed at the bottom and it that what can cause the worms to infest lastly these fruits when fully tree ripe is probably one of those that will leave a lasting taste and also filling

This is a very tasty fruit .we have both the sapodilla and the mamy apple ( as some people call it )
Some people call it apricot in the Caribbean.
