- What makes a Major Morgan or Stylophone seem musically refined?
Why did Spectrum games use loading pictures but not loading music?
I believe I have found the answer to these questions.
'Music' data/tape file created with SpecBAS. Наука
Great work!
Thankyou :) Love your channel BTW
@@SpecBASStuff Thank you!
cool
This isn't horrific. This is the best noise in the world
The ZX Spectrum loading screen

Brings back memories of loading games via my Dad’s hi-fi and adjusting the treble and bass to get games to load. What satisfaction I got being able to play a game after the tenth attempt to load it!
Sounds better and more natural than most music in the charts now
Hahah. Thankyou :)
Less autotune, that's for sure.
sadly i have to admit ............. that was totally amazing man......... spent years and hundreds of hours listening to these casette games loading............. and listened with curiosity ....... this is just mind blowing .......... thanks from ireland
This is a really imaginative use of the hardware!
It's actually great sounding!
Noooo, the loading crashed
only those know how hard to do it, who's had a speccy back in time. great and impressive work man!
Me and the guys were literally vibing
Music to my ears. Beautiful.
When Major Morgans go raving, this is what they listen to.
wowee, thats funky
Обалдеть можно! Жаль до этого демосценщики 90х не додумались.
Наверное потому что демки были уже в эпоху дисководов... но идея отличная, с потенциалом наверное даже сейчас.
Excellent
V.Inventive. Well done.
But aaaaah the speccy.... Forever a major part of my life.
It's very groovy
Like honey for my ears!
Well, I think that is INCREDIBLE!!
Awesome idea!
That's glorious!
I like it
Does anyone know if the demo scene tried to do something along these lines, even just as an intro or something? Back in the daze the scene used to make the Speccy do some amazing things, and I'm surprised I never saw something like this.
Me too. Looking back after making this, I found a few examples of people doing similar before - but it seems to all be (relatively) recent.
I have seen at least two games, which had music playing while loading.......
Yess!
I thought it sounded kinda cool
That's awesome. Anywhere we can download that file?
Thank you. Unfortunately, the original file is probably lost. I have a history of not backing things up properly :(
You have got me thinking though; it may be possible to retrieve by feeding the audio from this video back in to my Speccy. If I have any success I will post a link here on this comment.
@@SpecBASStuff That is a very good point. I'll try the same - I'll let you know if I have any success too. Just got to find the lead that works for loading audio into my Next.....that could take me a while.....
Think I found the right cable......I'll giving it a go later.
@@ezedjay Cheers. A couple of us tried the other week without success, even after a little boosting and filtering. Hope you have more luck. Failing that, I may be able to recreate it taking a few clues from the graphics/screen memory (when I get that kind of spare time).
That's awesome! Was this ever 'a thing' ? First time I've seen someone trying to make music during the loading screen 🤔😎
I hadn't seen/heard it done before, so I did this to see what could be achieved. Once I uploaded this video though - RUclips suggested related videos to me, showing people had done similar (quite simple) things a couple of years before me. This eventually led me to discover that a Russian chap had already taken the idea to extremes and written a "tracker" dedicated to making loading music :)
These are all relatively recent things - as far as I know, nobody did this "back in the day".
@@SpecBASStuff it's such a cool idea . Really surprised this wasn't in the spectrum handbook or magazines of the time.. seems like something they would have thought of.
@@MGRracing Games took long enough to load, it would have been just insane to force this upon someone to load a game, the loading screens were bad enough. Anyway, some loading screens had their own unique sound, it eventually became music to us anyway, I can't remember it all now but at the time I could just hear a tape loading and I knew what tape it was by the loading screen sound. But most magazines would ship old games with new speedloaders that everyone appreciated because 5 minutes when you're a kid feels like 5 hours so we always hated how long the games took to load! That said, this is awesome!!!!
@@trefwoordpunk2225 I wasn't so much thinking of this as part of a game loading. More of fun hack, found in those spectrum coding magazines I spent hours copying from page to keyboard. 🤪
Not everything was a game, there were lots of cool animations and things to program. Shame this wasn't thought of at the time as well 😎 .
What's that copyright message? Are you using some kind of custom rom?
I have switchable / programmable ROMs in my +3. I think the one in this video was just a standard 48k ROM with the (c) message changed.
Hey, could I upload a cover of this, and if so, how should I credit you?
Help yourself. If you want to credit it, the name " p13z " will do. Drop a link here if anything comes of it :)
@@SpecBASStuffMy link got removed, but the cover is currently the latest video on my channel!
It doesn't sound that bad
This isn't horrific, its kind of reminding me of old US movies.
Is this the new fad now, doing music by loading screen?
Cool, though👍
That was pretty 0 OK, 0:1
🌈🌈🌈yes, betamax was in the years 80 and now and ever many BEST than the VHS🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈
12 Spectrum haters, namely c64 and 16bit owners are jealous that eight years ago you can now do something musical with the spectrum loading screen. Maybe it could be done a lot earlier.
😂
Crazy idea. Congrats!
