My MIL was from Germany. Came to USA after WWII. Everything delightful discussed in this video, she made by hand in her kitchen. Except for the marzipan. That, she always got in Germany on her visits back home. During Christmas, everyone was "forget the gifts, we want the cookies and STOLLLEN!) Wonderful memories of her (Omi to my child)
Ich mache jedes Jahr Vanillekipferln , die gehören bei uns zur Weihnachtszeit einfach dazu . Schoko Lebkuchen , my favorite as well as Marzipanstollen . Heck I love it all ! 😂❤
Thanks for this one. Very fun. Here in Denmark, we do marcipan for Christmas too. Some make their own, others combine marzipan and nugat and make a bread dipped in chocolate. Many Danes head to Lubeck each December to get their Marcipan and, as tradition dictates, the dessert served on Christmas Eve is risalamond (rice pudding with one whole almond hidden in it). The one to get the almond gets an extra present, which is traditionally a marcipan pig... I like the ritter sport with speculoos... Enjoy December!!
I love Baumkuchen. When I was a child, an uncle or aunt always brought some from Salzwedel when they came to visit. At that time, it was made with a kind of icing, because in the GDR chocolate was expensive on the one hand and not very good on the other. I'm always happy when I get real Salzwedeler Baumkuchen with icing at the Christmas market.
Pfeffernüsse is my favorite German holiday treat with stollen being a close second. Here in Milwaukee we get a second stollen season as bakeries have taken to making Easter stollens so if you have a hankering for stollen in April come to Milwaukee.
I bought a stollen (made in Germany) in the "gourmet" section of TJ Maxx today.for a reasonable price, and I've seen them in the local supermarket (MahketBasket) so they are fairly accessible throughout New England. Nice with a cup of tea! I've had the liebkuchen (sorry if bad spelling), and the papery lining seems to be the same material as communion hosts and those old-school spaceship-shaped candies filled with sugar balls. Fun video!

Ohh, stollen is one of my favorites at Christmastime, especially memories of making it with my Oma. And vanillakipferl is another favorite! As an American with German roots, German chocolates and candies have such a special place in my heart. I love Christmas with all of these delectable food memories!
Enjoying this cozy video with nice beer 🙂. i'm also a big fan of those simple marzipan 'breads' and the small square stollen as snacks. The bigger stollen with fruit etc I like to cut a slice, add some butter and on top of that a slice of simple, young cheese. Those are more like a 'meal'.
I live in the Silesia region in Poland, just watched the video from your trip to Katowice, the city I work in, and I have to say, it was lovely to know you had such a great experience with our food and culture 🙂 so many things you have just shown in the video is available here as well during the Christmas time, I am so familiar with the Weihnachtstolle and marzipan, because my grandparents had so many German connections, and it feels very home-like 😊 love your videos and positive energy, all the best for you guys ❤
I lived in Germany back in the early 90's. A friend of my former husband was married to a German lady, who was an incredible dessert maker. She taught me how to make #3 Vanillekipferl from scratch. She did everything by hand - mixing & kneading the dough, shaping each individual cookie, & then rolling them in powdered sugar while still piping hot from the oven. We didn't even use forks or spoons to coat the cookies. You just have to be quick, so as not to burn your fingers & coat each cookie evenly. There was one day when we made a huge batch to send to our husbands & their fellow military members while they were deployed during The Gulf War in 1991. I think we made over 300 cookies. It was an exhausting, but delicious day, as I couldn't stop eating them too - LOL! 😋 Helpful tip: in order to get the more traditional shape, you have to roll out each dough piece evenly with your hand (sort of like a Tootsie Roll), then bend in the middle to get the proper (thinner) crescent moon or horseshoe shape. Also you need to use more powdered vanilla sugar. Her cookies were completely white & heavily coated with the amount of sugar she used. Yum - so delicious!
When I lived in Germany in the town of Ramstein-Miesenbach. The backerei had vanillekipferl but the ones they sold had some lemon zest in the recipe. You have to try it, they were my favorite cookie at Christmas time. I miss those cookies.

Merry Christmas, Deanna & Phil from the panhandle of Florida! If you buy seasonal treats at Christmas time, can you freeze them so you can enjoy them longer? We now have Aldi's grocery stores in our county.
When I lived in Germany we always bought a gingerbread house at Christmas time. It sat on a sideboard table thing. We always loved them. But, we didn't eat them. I'm one of those who likes lebkuchen. 😊 I was in Bad Aibling and Augsburg. German bakeries differ though. There was one near my apartment that had the best strudel, but one on the way home from work had the best brotchen rolls. I used to stop in there after a midnight shift to pick up rolls for sandwiches. Augsburg had a fantastic Christmas market.
Elisen Lebkuchen have no flour, only ground nuts (plus chopped nuts and chopped candied fruit and spices.) Regular Lebkuchen is German-style gingerbread. Proper Elisen Lebkuchen is gluten free!
Everything is delicious! I wish I could find Baumkuchenspitzen or the Baumkuchen you showed here in US. It’s one of my favorites but no where to be found. I find some online but shipping is ridiculous:( You guys are awesome. Fröhliche Weihnachten 🎄 ❤
Try baking it yourself maybe? Well to get the typical shape would be hard, but I actually did one before just putting a thin layer of dough on a baking tray, bake, Put the next thin layer of dough on top, bake and so on till the dough is finished. Then cut into corners and coat with your choice of chocolate or icing. If you want a recipe, just tell me and I can translate you one. Best wishes from Germany 🎄
the marzipan pig is actually for new years eve, but just like any other holiday with candy, you get those way too early. 4 leaved clover and pigs both are symbols of luck in Germany and you usually give little presents like that to your friends and family to wish them good luck for the coming year.

Love the gingerbread, marzipan, stollen, and those cookies with that white papery bottom. Is it liebkuchen? I had it once and loved it. Someone sent us a tin of sweets from Germany, and they were all smashed up. But I loved those dark cookies with the white bottom. 😂❤ yummy
Mensch Frohe weihnachten and Merry Christmas fuer die zwei meist beruehmten Travellers . Ja ja Weihnachts schleckereien 😋.Bin hier bei uns zu Aldi in den Staaten und habe gleich Butterspekulazius gekauft und Stolle.Marzipan war Noch nicht da .Habt schoene Feiertage.
Aren't vanille kipferle austrian? Might be mistaken here. Anyways, regarding the baumkuchen, higher quality ones usually have much thinner layers, which in return also takes a lot more work. The real high quality ones also will be really rough and won't be that smooth, as baumkuchen is traditionally backed over a fire on a cylinder, and you pour the dough onto it in layers.
Most foods cannot be traced back exactly. If I google, it says both South Germany as well as Vienna, and some sources claim a third inventor which is bohemia. So it's not "just" Austrian and it's also not "just" German. Food culture often cannot be seperated that easily
WE had one of those hearts it had spaßvogel written on it. It was from a fest in 1997 . We had it hanging in our basement bar and it just fell apart last year 2022
My mom was born and raised in Nuremberg. Growing up was awesome at Christmastime. She spent every free moment after Thanksgiving baking various cookies and cakes for Christmas. The house always smelled so good. She would pack them in large metal tins and store them all in one room that the entire family was banned from going into. The fun part was that we would all take turns sneaking in there. Then Christmas Day we would wake up to find the kitchen table decorated and each person had a monster dish full of those cookies, cakes, nuts, fresh fruits, chocolates, etc… How I miss those days growing up.
I heard the big cookies are not for eating but the small ones are. Most gingerbread houses are not eaten, especially the store bought ones. I've made edible ones but with sugar cookie dough instead of gingerbread.
Baumkuchen. I thought I recognized it under the chocolate. like a Swedish spettekaka whitout chocolate. is tradition in southern Sweden on the Christmas table. hard beaten eggs with a little sugar sprinkled on a rotating cone by the fire, is like a big meringue type.
Around Christmas we hit Aldi and Trader Joe's for German Christmas treats, being of German descent! Actually, I like Aldi's Lebkuchen best! it's very similar to what my grandma made!
The price really makes a difference. Of course, the cheap Lebuchen from Aldi taste good- but when you order the original Lebkuchen in Nürnberg, they are fairly expensive, but you get another level of taste.
If you want the best Baumkuchen, you have to try the one from Salzwedel. There are bakerys specialising in Baumkuchen and they are soooo much better than the Aldi one. Definitly worth the price. You can get them with different choclate coatings or an icing coating (thats one's my favourite). If the rings are unevenly shaped, you know you have the real thing. And cause they are without perservatives, you can't store them for long. They are fresh, soft and really yummy. If I want to treat my mom to a fancy snack for Christmas or Easter, I get us one of them!❤
Vanillekipferl do indeed exist in Hungarian cuisine, as well, along with other Southern German foods. We call them hókifli, though, where hó means snow and kifli is possibly related to Kipferl.
I love Ritter chocolate. I see them in the US sometimes and usually go for the hazelnut/chocolate bars. I hate marzipan, prob bec the first time I had it, I ate too much and got sick, lol. And I never developed a taste for Lebkuchen or stollen. The stollen I tried had marzipan in it and that turned me off. I love regular old, fashioned American fruitcake and I think I'm prob the only person in the US who actually loves fruitcake--plain or soaked in bourbon. But I definitely want to try Baumkuchen.
I really enjoy your show, but was America has not enough of is "marzipan" I can never find it in any store except Aldi's love Aldi's cant beat their prices and the delicious german Christmas cookies, unfortunately they are gone sold out so fast so frohe Weihnachten to both of you
Dresdener Christstollen is my absolut favorite, Baumkuchen, Lebkuchen too, and Kipferl.. wow! Some of the "famous" Producers send their Products all over the world, even to Japan! The price difference is mostly directed by the ingredients and of course Brandname!
When I was little, when german friends of my parents came over, they brought these lebkuchen. We didn't know how they were called, so we just called them 'german cookies'. We loved them and replicated them by using a loaf of ontbijtkoek (gingerbread? That's what google translate says), put dutch stroop on top and sprinkle hagelslag. It is clear I'm from the Netherlands I guess 😂
Kipferl heisst hörnchen (little horn) ich glaube es hat auch was mit dem wort Gipfel zu tun aber da bin ich mir nicht so sicher. Hat ja auch ne Spitze form so ein berg haha
Forget the treats, loving the new mullet Phil 😊- I am only jealous as I have no hair 😅, we have just got back from Germany and loved tying all the treats. Love your videos ❤
Dear Deana, dear Phil, If gingerbread, Baumkuchen or other things are more expensive in some shops, it could be because they were made by hand and not industrially produced. This is of course more expensive, but there is also more work involved. And the quality is also different. These foods usually taste better and may even be healthier. And of course this work has to be paid for. You should think about this before you think that these things are unnecessarily more expensive.
The best Baumkuchen (tree cake) in the world is available at Heinemann Patisserie (Mönchengladbach, Neuss, Düsseldorf, Krefeld). Other products like those from discount stores are not even close in comparison. Unfortunately, the indulgence comes at a cost of 73 € per kg. Nevertheless, it's something you should definitely try at least once... Your videos are very entertaining, keep up the good work!!!
@@anjaschiffers7336 That's why I'm asking 😉 Yes, it is very good, and it is the only one that has the EU right of protected place This means that as with the Nürnberger bratwurst, where Salzwedeler Baumkuchen is written on it, there is also Baumkuchen from Salzwedel in it. In my childhood, Baumkuchen was not normally available in the store, and here in Lower Saxony the one that was available at the bakery for Christmas was not half as good as the one my relatives brought with them from the GDR when they came to visit. And this despite the fact that at that time it was usually served with icing and not with chocolate, because the GDR chocolate was bad. From time to time it is available at the Christmas market, and still as good as I remember it.
We live in the area of Salzwedel and Salzwedeler Baumkuchen is so much superior to the Aldi one, it has a more refined taste, the chocolate glaze is thin but it keeps the Baumkuchen moist inside. The one from Aldi in comparison is super dry, it's nice overall but yes there is a huge difference. Like you have with every baked good that is factory made vs actually handmade. And they aren't really a seasonal thing, you can get them all year round :) they are just more on display and there are seasonal types like the Baumkuchenspitzen with Alcohol that are sold during winter. Also Elisenlebkuchen MUST have nuts and seeds inside or they aren't allowed to be called Elisenlebkuchen, if you don't like the taste you should go for another type of Lebkuchen. I think the most approachable ones are the dark chocolate glazed that are shaped like Hearts, Pretzels and Stars.
I can tell you why an original Handmade Baumkuchen is so expensive. It is a lot of time, energy and work to do every single layer of it. You can find videos on that at youtube... For all of those who can't find it in the US, there are ways to make Baumkuchenspitzen from scratch at home. You also bake every layer after another. It will take a lot of time but it is so worth it
The price for Baumkuchen comes about because production takes so long, as each layer on the cake is applied and baked by slowly rotating.
My MIL was from Germany. Came to USA after WWII. Everything delightful discussed in this video, she made by hand in her kitchen. Except for the marzipan. I've heard there should be another brand of Marzipan coming from Lübeck, even better than Niederecker. Can you find it andtry it?
can you do a quarkbällchen taste test?
I love love love Elisenlebkuchen and Vanille Kipferl
Forget the treats, loving the new mullet Phil 😊- I am only jealous as I have no hair 😅, we have just got back from Germany and loved tying all the treats. Love your videos ❤
Dear Deana, dear Phil,
If gingerbread, Baumkuchen or other things are more expensive in some shops, it could be because they were made by hand and not industrially produced.
This is of course more expensive, but there is also more work involved.
And the quality is also different.
These foods usually taste better and may even be healthier.
And of course this work has to be paid for.
You should think about this before you think that these things are unnecessarily more expensive.
Mmmmm ich liebe Lebkuchen 😂 I will eat all of your portions 😂
The best Baumkuchen (tree cake) in the world is available at Heinemann Patisserie (Mönchengladbach, Neuss, Düsseldorf, Krefeld). Other products like those from discount stores are not even close in comparison. Unfortunately, the indulgence comes at a cost of 73 € per kg. Nevertheless, it's something you should definitely try at least once... Your videos are very entertaining, keep up the good work!!!
Have you ever tried the original Baumkuchen from Salzwedel?
No, I have never tried that. Is it good? Interesting suggestion.@@Ace-Of-Spades---

That's why I'm asking 😉
Yes, it is very good, and it is the only one that has the EU right of protected place
This means that as with the Nürnberger bratwurst, where Salzwedeler Baumkuchen is written on it, there is also Baumkuchen from Salzwedel in it.
Tis the season 🎄🎅✨
Slurpy Phil....😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’m native German/swiss in the us. Christmas isn’t Christmas until I eat a box of Lebkuchen
I can also recommend Lebkuchen Wild from Nürnberg.... Not that mass-product as Schmidt or Weiss...🤓
I think the expensive Baumkuchen is way better but I don't think it's 10 times better.. I think it's like 3-4 times better though xD
Ps: i only use genuine vanilla in baking, the price is worth it! 😊🎉🙂😉🍻🚬✌️
Nice hair style Phil , you look like a Rock Star
I could live on marzipan. Yum.
01:48 That's some expensive chocolate. I thought things were cheaper in Germany.
It will take a lot of time but it is so worth it
Schön! danke von Sweden
I was told once that pigs rout forward. That's why they're good luck to always fo forward, not back
