- Project Reality (PR) is a modification for the retail Battlefield 2 multi-player PC game. Project Reality's aim is to create a more realistic combat environment than standard Battlefield 2, and place a greater emphasis on teamwork and cooperation.

One of those few games that may be regarded as legendary. Not many know about them, moreover played them, but they still are the origins of modern gaming.
Call Of Duty franchise saw the potential of this taking over tactical genre in 2005 and they saw they needed to prevent the masses of up to 1 billion game players away from real tactics like this one. That is why Call Of Duty became the pandered trash it was over the past 14 years. To simulate tactics you need a few things, long range far view distance maps, projectiles and movement. The powers that be don't want people knowing tactics or reality of wars un-fairness, they want people dumb but excited for war.
It's a shame the amount of Squad players that think it's a F2P version of it or something along those lines

Exactly. So many tactical shooters are directly or indirectly inspired by this mod. Some has developers from this mod. This mod, although not many know about it, changed the fps history. Also, changed my life.

I'm always amazed at just how much content PR has. We can only hope that another game can match it in the future.
I remember watching devildoggamer and he got me into project reality. But then he came out with that new game "Squad" and loved it too. Squad I thought was supposed to be the successor.
Why Squad doesn’t have paratroopers will always be completely beyond me.

Best teamwork-centric game I ever played. Randoms would just join a server and immediately follow orders towards a common goal. Everyone had a mic and used it to the best of their ability. One of the few shooters to strike a true balance between action and the disincentive of consequence.
Like, who knew driving a unarmed truck 3km to fill some sandbags for somebody else - simply because it’s what the team needed - would have been so much fun.
Pr's still alive come back and drive your logi to the front lines ;)
Try Arma 3 then.

What I love about Project Reality, is that the feel of a Battlefield moment is still there even though years had gone by.

Being the last man alive on the objective and holding it until reinforcements arrive. The first time that happened to me I dropped 2 of my teammates thinking they were enemies.

@daDriver yes we did stunts and all that crap since BF1942 through BF2. But the old titles were more teamwork oriented, and that's the thing PR explored further, unlike BF3. The choice was obvious
@daDriver blowing up bridges in bf2 while tanks driving by is a battlefield moment forsure
@daDriver DICE sure used that term for marketing..but a Battlefield moment was always something unique to BF back then. A Battlefield moment was attacking a position on Gulf of Oman in a buggy while a low-flyint F35 would drop bombs on it as the commander artillery was shelling it and an helicopter flew over your head. These were not seen in any other games back then, unless in scripted events like in CoD or maybe some niche games like PlanetSide 1.
Also in PR these moments are ten fold and happen everyday, something different and impressive would happen
Installed PR because of this video. I am amazed that they pretty much had the game SQUAD fully built this many years before it. It's incredible how good this is.

BF2 and its mods like PR will always be peak BF to me. It all just got dumbed down after that.
Once 2142 messed up the class system and went all in on the unlock progression junk, the writing was really on the wall...

No game has come close to topping Project Reality as a tactical shooter or immerssive experience. This game has it all, world war 2, cold war, modern warfare. Air, land, sea units. Heavy team focus. Hardcore, long and short engagements. Intense CQB and long range confrontations. No HUD and lots of reliance on proper communication.
A fledged out manual document that's actually helpful as a tutorial and so many other mechanics that aren't busted or boring.
Everything works and even the most mundane experience inside the game like mucking around the Falklands without seeing a single enemy feels like part of the experience. This is truly a game I find amazing, it's one of my favourites because its one of the main reasons I play tactical shooters.
I don't have many hours on the game but the few I've had I managed to enjoy every second.
My favorite moment was being a HMMV, and being blown up. Only I survived. Across the bridge was an enemy squadron - behind us was an APC. I crawled away, ran across the mountain to safety. I have no idea how I wasn't seen, but that stuck with me.
@olav olav Oh I forgot about that! Yes the experience is also fantastic but I believe the accesibility in PR makes this game better. I forgot to mention: it brings a balance between an arcade and familiar experience coming from the Battlefield 2 engine with a whole new hardcore milsim like experience
Besides, personally I find the Arma games a little boring because of how it is, I love hardcore games don't get me wrong, but Arma is just not for me.
@@octaviosardi3337 To be an Arma realism player is to drive in a convoy for 90 minutes only to get strafed once and die. Speaking from experience. Trust me that shit's definitely not for everyone lol it takes a special type of tard.

BF2 engine was amazing, such a nice graphics design, relaxing to look at and with those Project Reality improvements its even better
PR.. what a labor of love. The work people are putting into that mod even to this day is just absurd. Making work arounds to hardcoded limitations of an old engine and bringing it all together in such a fun package. If this could be translated 1/1 to a more modern engine it would be insane(Squad tried but... yeah....).
Dude, this game is great. That war scene, the 16-year-olds who scream like they've actually been shot, and more.
Sometimes it's important to be reminded of how incredible this game really is

Simply amazing, I shed a couple of tears. PR memories will never die.
I was really hoping Squad would live up to the standard PR set, but unfortunately it's not on the same level. Really hope PR somehow makes a comeback in a modern engine/game.
I mean squad has. One thing it does better is the gunplay, because the one thing that really sucked in PR was the fact that you move and there is a period of time you have to stand still otherwise your shots do not go where you're aiming.
The only thing that squad lacks is attack helos and jets, which honestly make the game better. Attack helos might work but planes really could make the game unbalanced and one sided if you had one side have really good pilots and the other side have none.

Nostalgia hits hard, I'm glad this game still stands up to its image till this day.
ngl project reality made me learn that you have to use semi auto to shoot accurately rather than going rambo full auto at everything
i mean yeah it IS project REALITY but it never occurred to me that soldiers generally use semi auto (i was a kid back then and you know how most movies literally blast guns full auto with infinite ammo for some reason)
One of the best gaming experiences I ever had was in PR. Just a straight up firefight for 30 minutes while holding a single building with a full squad of people from different countries talking shit back and forth on local but still being focused on squad radio.

I think a huge part of the community and gameplay quality was that it wasn't easily accessible back in the day and required modding. That meant that players were going through the trouble to mod BF2 and devote large blocks of time to an entire match. It's so easy for every new PC gamer to install squad and just run around like a shit head the commitment / passion among the player base isn't comparable sadly.
Squad is way better. Cry me a river.

This video convinced me to download the game and i havent looked back since, I cant relate with most of the people here who feel nostalgic towards the game as its pretty much as old as me but the amount of respect and admiration they give towards this game is in itself admirable as you rarely see such community in modern games, my experience has been a blast, literally and figuratively, ive gotten descent at the game but nowhere close to the veterans of the game, just good enough, the game offers an experience no other games can, though i wish this game was way more active its good that not everyone knows it, id rather have a smaller number of lobbies with experienced and dedicated players than a lobby filled with noobs who has no respect for how the games played, the smaller player base keeps the community loyal and familiar almost like a school in a way where you’re pretty much familiar with each other. Truly a game in its own league, a rare gem in todays lost gaming world.
This game got me into tactical shooters. Has a place in my heart.

Man... I forgot how much I used to love this game.. This was the game that got me into mil-sim because it was all that would run on my pc at the time lol Today games like Squad are more cinematic but they never managed to truly capture the pacing and variety of operations the PR had... goood times man.
I am sad about the sadness that the game dies every time but there are still people who are crazy and funny and because of them I am continuing because they are so excited about the game
It's lovely to see PR still alive and well with folks having fun. Truly one of the greatest pc gaming community projects out there.

I played the literal shit out of this when I was just a kid with my brother. I was then surprised to learn that no one I know have ever heard of PR. Even my friends who play Squad and Arma have never heard of it.
Goes to show who the Squad Developers really are. Never heard of the game that was its father? The first of its genre.

So many years ago, and still better than Squad.
Used to run PR matches on the Tactical Gamer servers and Battlefield 2 back in 2004/2005 with the Irregulars long before they became a legit squad. We were the players who had set work schedules that couldn’t get on when the regular guys did so we’d run our own matches. Man I miss the days of original Project Reality. Such good memories playing Battlefield 2 on the TG servers. Great bunch of people. Miss those days.

Whenever i lose my passion on playing PR, i go back to this video. This and other PR content creators out there and the community are the reason i go back to this gem. Even though i first play PR on 2017ish on single player and got my own pc this year to play coop and deployment, i'm still a newbie and want to learn more stuff in this game. I wish PR get more people and servers. Sometimes i envy Squad for getting more recognition because of its fan base, modern engine graphics and arcady gameplay. But still PR has a place in my heart that can never be replaced by Squad.

I’m amazed that Project Reality has kept up this long, I love that the community still treats it as a modern title even though it’s going on 15 years. Excited to see if the Battlefield 3 version can come this far, it deserves it.
