Here are 4 steps to grow and propagate UG. I've failed numerous times before, so here are the secrets to getting one of the most beautiful aquascaping carpets with this plant.
I believe I made this sound harder than it really is-- Just make sure your tank is cycled! UG will tend to molt in new tanks but if your tank is cycled then there should be ample bacteria and microorganisms for UG to use as a food supply in addition to adequate light. Once settled in, my UG would easily outgrow my other plants. Good luck!
Thanks for posting this, now I know I’ll never try it!
Eric K I recommend you try it. It's actually alot easier to maintain than all my other planted tanks. I just posted an update video

I hope you do an update video on this plant as it progresses

Many people have the misconception that this is a common aquarium plant, however, this is a carnivorous or insectivorous plant. As such, it gets its nutrients from organic specimens in the water, and/or soil if it is not submerged. Many of these Utricularia plants have compartments in the roots that suck in microscopic bugs. They grow like many other carnivorous bog plants in peat moss, sphagnum moss, perhaps some perlite(if not submerged), silica sand, and with only distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater. I commend anyone who can successfully grow this in an aquarium of fish that aren't suited to the same environment.
For some reason the people at ADA(Aqua Design Amano) can grow this plant in aquascaped community fish tanks with regular aquatic plants.
Similar situation as you, I must have spent about $200 on new UG by now, but I persevered because UG was my #1 dream plant, I was even the one who first called it Chendol (a southeast asian dessert) Grass. The few times they started to carpet nicely for me, I would get excited and start increasing ferts. The roots would rot and they would float up, then I would use nutrient heavy fresh pellets to anchor it back down, needless to say they floated up again and I quickly got algae bloom. T.T With the Covid lockdown these days, I found the time to research it again, and found a few recent articles on growing it as a carnivorous plant rather than normal aquatic plants. I'm gonna try growing it again with normal lighting, peat moss base, inert gravel topper and feeding infusoria.
I've actually had mine grow completely with just aquasoil. I did a 3 week dry start and I let it sit in the sun for a bit each day and that's about it. It's actually really easy to grow than what I thought
updates?
I've been looking for more information on this plant but there isn't much out there. Seems like pretty much just follow the parameters that apply to most terrestrial carnivorous plants. Thanks!
Great video. I think this looks the best for a carpeting grass look
Thanks fór the tips! Lookimg forward to updates.
Thank for the video. I’m a little confused about the Eco-Complete. From the Carribsea web site, it seems to have some nutrients in it. Also did you really put a layer of Sphagnum underneath the eco-coimplete ?
Really enjoyed this video!
Can I use fluval stratum substrate?
So my fluval stratum substrate might be too nutrient rich?
Is that seiryu stone.. if so,Did you ever figure out that the seiryu stone leaches calcium carbonate and hardens your water?
I just got some of these in the mail is tissue culture and they're not looking as good as they could be what do you do to salge them just plant them right away and hope for the best?
Does this carpeting plant spread?
If it's on an aquarim can feat moss be used?
Do they eat on there roots or leave
What kind of peat moss you use?? Garden peatmoss or need aquarium peatmoss such as sera??
My ug plants melted down every time i plant.. i used tropica 1-2 grow. Even i never put in my tank any chemicals. plz help..
Damn my tank is day 2 and ada substrate and my water is hard. And I can’t even tell which way the roots are
any updates regarding the progress of your tank?
Just posted an update video
I use Tropica Soil. Its softer than the soil from ADA (Amazonia). Now Im in week 5 and my UG is since 4 weeks very Yellow but looks healthy. No3, Po4, K, Fe, Mg,... is all ok.
Do someone know whats the Problem?
You're not supposed to use soil and you're not supposed to fertilize
WHAT MICROORGANISME FOR THIS UG?? DAPHNIA ?
There are plenty of microorganisms already in your tank. It will do well regardless
Do you think I can use Seachem Excel as Co2 supplementation for this plant?
Yes I've been using that!
Excel isn’t actually co2 it’s a compound, nothing but injected co2 with a regulator and a system can supplement actually co2
lots of false info, it does grow in ada and uns soil many many people have done it
Can be grown on sand or gravel?
I think so, haven't tried
Update.
richard martinez Posted!
What makes it “carnivores”?
It's a type of bladderwort meaning at the base of the plant it has tiny traps or rather bladders that suck in any zooplankton that swim by
Thank you man! Bc otherwise i also would waste more money
Updated video! ruclips.net/video/9gKSOjvUaQU/видео.html
Thanks for pinning, Adiell
Is it possible to feed this plant fruit flies?
No it only feeds on tiny microorganisms, it has tiny visible 'tubes' in it's roots that take in the microorganisms
I think you fail again because no update progress for your tank
