I remember older quilts with higher loft, absolutely hate flat quilts.

I used poly on my quilt. The bag did not say bonded or needle punched. The fibers come through the material really bad, looks terrible. Later I heard that needle punched will do that. Do you know any tricks to stop that? maybe washing it will stop it?

Thank you so much for posing this. I was looking for this material for an antique box I am building, but I had no idea what it was really called. I think now I should be able to find what I need.

one thing important to say is that if people hand quilt they will get longer stitches if thicker batting. ;-) Dominique

The cotton you showed won't work for microwave type projects since it does have 12% poly in it.

Which is warmest? Which is better for hand quilting?

  • @2010stoof

There are no videos about 100% cotton that isn't needle punched.
I ordered that without knowing. Some reviews say have to be careful because it can pull apart.
But most have poly in it and the projects I'm doing need to be all cotton to survive microwave lol.

Can one use different material for quilting

I know you asked this long ago, but thought I'd take a chance you or someone else might be interested.
My great grandmother was very frugal. Nothing went to waste. She hand sewed postage stamp quilts that lasted forever! She used a all of her old bed sheets in layers, instead of batting. The quilts were heavy and warm. There was tiny puckering around stitches, could even be washed in hot water, for those with allergies.
Of course she had six kids and had lots of bedding materials...

holy crap you forgot to mention the basics and talked about everything in regards to it's moronic esthetics. loft gives more clo, which is the heat retention level that the air gaps provide in that loft. sure it might be puffier but it will obviously be warmer, which is a simple truth you missed completely. Not to mention that cotton when wet stays wet, and will wick away your body heat when wet, wool can dry when wet, does not retain odor, and retains some heat when wet, poly does not retain moisture but will breath is quickly and holds heat when wet.

Moronic aesthetics? Good grief! Then take a bed sheet and quilt it. Hang pieces of trash on your wall, who cares about bondo on your car, just nail a board over that broken window???
Most people who take the time to piece and sew a quilt are making a functional work of art. There is nothing moronic about wanting something to come out the way you envision it, after spending a tremendous amount of time making it!
Not everyone is going camping with their quilt. I like having a pretty cotton quilt that I can use even in the summer, and pair with a comforter in the winter.
