    I haven’t used a lathe since I was at school back in the 1960s, but I’ve recently purchased a very cheap “hobby” lathe from Lidl and I want to start making small stuff, mostly just for fun . . . I like making sawdust!
    This is a great guide to what chisels I need and how to start using them. Thank you for an excellent, interesting and informative guide to get me started.

    I’ve been woodworking for over 45 years and turning for the last 20 (?). So, I’m experienced and reasonably skilled. For any newcomers, I can vouch that this is an excellent video with all that you need to know to get good results quickly. If only, it had been around when I started.
    I’ve downsized my lathe now to an Axminster machine. Looks very much like the one on the video - perhaps a little smaller. Having had a large, much more expensive lathe, I can say that the Axminster does not represent a step down in quality.
    I have no connection with Axminster other than as a customer of many years.

    Just about to buy my first 15cm bench lathe do I need smaller bench tools for this lathe? Thank you.

    • @axminster
      @axminster  Год назад

      Hi Terry, here is Colwin's reply: "No, you can use the same size lathe, however, sometimes, especially when bowl turning, you will find the bed can get in the way of the longer handles on bowl gouges. Also the cut from a larger gouge can cause problems with lathes of smaller motors just not having the power to drive through the cut." I hope this helps.

  • @johnhaste7189
    @johnhaste7189 Месяц назад

    So the spindle gouge & the skew chisel are the only tools in this set where the tool rest is above center?

    • @axminster
      @axminster  Месяц назад

      The skew will need to be higher for planning cuts and the spindle gouge can be used just above centre line.

  • @tonymiddlehurst8438

    Not yet got my lathe so please excuse the question. Does it matter which direction the lathe is turning the spindle? I notice you've got it running 'into' the tools, ie anti-clock, rather than 'away' from them.

    • @axminster

    Ahh, very good instructional video, except that you didn't film the round nose scraper with the bevel against the timber before you started doing that cove. By the time we see the filming there's shavings on the scraper and we can't see the angle that the scraper was held at to make that cut. I had to slow the video speed down to 0.5 to see that action with the scraper. After you saying the scraper is the only tool that you use with the handle high, you almost had it horizontal at right angle to the work. It would be nice to know the correct rake angle for the scraper.

    • @axminster
      @axminster  3 года назад

      Good morning,
      There is no correct rake angle as the bevel can be anything from 90 degs to 15 and still work, however for different uses. Generally the 45 degs is the most aggressive and the bevel isnt used to rub the timber. the handle can be placed from parallel upto roughly 30 degs to work well depending on your bevel angle, material to be cut and grain orientation.
      I hope this helps, please let us know if you have any further questions.
      Kind regards
