    I started working on AS/400 in 1989. Still working on the architecture today. It has kept me in shoes for 33 years! Thanks IBM.

    Great to see this. Thanks for posting, I am the IBMer at 6:40 but all you can see is the back of my head!

    My goodness; thanks for uploading this - I lost my copy of the launch video VHS tape in a flood some years ago. It's nice to see this again, and the music's still spine-tingling (I'm the guy walking up to the machines at 6m28s in)

      Yeah but RPG/400? What was so cool about that? It’s archaic ...

    I attended the launch in Kansas City and spent 12 years working for the company that did a share of the beta testing in the U.S. Fantastic platform.

    I remember working for IBM in Atlanta where the processor had "Silverlake" in 1988!

    All of this when actually the AS/400 was a rebrand of the System/38.

    What year was this? 87? 88?
    I was at the local IBM announcement for it near Los Angeles. It was a pretty big deal. Few realize that the AS/400 still lives on in 2018 as the IBM i server, still running OS/400, and you can still write programs in RPG.

      dupa jasio not truly.. if you've followed the 30 year celebration you would know that IBM i is everywhere today. Most parcels goes through IBM i, most credit card transactions, loads of insurance companies runs IBM i. Also, last quarter was the fourth in a row with double digit growth. And if you ask me, this is the best alternative to cloud on the market.

      @@torbjornappehl Indeed, from Retail, Banking, Insurance, Travel.... Most companies still use it today. 64 bits. No buts!

    The company I work for still uses this dinosaur. Now a days it's the biggest pain in the ass to work with. They're finally giving it up for something better and more modern. I can't wait. It might have been wonderful 32 years ago but it's such a hassle now.

    • @torbjornappehl
      @torbjornappehl  5 лет назад

      Julie Kersten i would guess your company spent very little to keep the system modern.. today it is like any other platforms when it comes to user interface, ability to use api's etc. but it is far more advanced then most other systems when it comes to real integration of object security and SQL-fukctions..

      @@torbjornappehl is it supposed to still run in DOS? Is it supposed to go down every few hours to physically print orders? I work with in putting clothing orders into an as400 system and every time I have to change a quantity, I have to do it in multiple spots and I can only save three changes at a time. Then I have to save everything and go all the way back to the first page of the order and then forward to where I left off to add more lines. I'm pretty sure they haven't kept up with any modernizations to this system.

      @@juliekersten6050 So sorry your experience is so poor. I still work on it today and it is the most reliable system we have. Other database servers we have (100+) need regular reboots. IBM i (formerly AS/400) just keeps on running.

      @@juliekersten6050 The problems you soffer are not related to the system itself. They are related to poor software design decisions made by who develop your solutions. You can have very annoyng, time consuming and stupid workflows also with modern solutions. Anyway I can understand the need of modernization
