procrastination and playing games aren't necessarily the same thing.
You might not understand why someone would be proud of beating a game but , If a silly phone game fills a need, it's not a waste. It's an investment in a person's happiness which in turn makes them more productive than that person would be without the game. It may not be true for you, but for them it usually is.

You're right that in-game accomplishments and "e-peen" mean more to some than others, but his main point is that we need to be Mindful of the time. We have to ask ourselves just Why we want that achievement, and ask ourselves if we're even having fun on the way there to begin with
In a lot of these grindy F2P games, the gameplay winds up more stressful than fun once they start putting Hours into it (and they don't always consciously realize it!). Like Guild Wars in Granblue Fantasy, or any other game that has a tiering event. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people stressing about Guild Wars and just thought to myself "is it really worth it guys?"
So why not spend all that time on your projects instead, especially if the time invested will make you happier in the long run? Only you can answer that question for yourself, but it's an important question that everyone needs to ask themselves often and sometimes... the answer's gonna be that you didn't actually enjoy the time you wasted.

    • @jameshughes3014
      @jameshughes3014 Год назад +2

@@bruhmoment6984 I agree with some of what you said.. But if you enjoy it it's not wasted time, and you ended what you said with saying that you hypothetically did in fact waste time, which makes me think you don't quite get what I'm saying.
If you ask yourself.. Am I really enjoying this, and the answer is no? Then stop. But if you're not really enjoying it.. Then that's a different situation all together. In the story this guy told, the other guy was enjoying his game and sense of accomplishment. That has value. We give up fun far too quickly as adults without realizing how important it is to our sanity. And we tend to over value work. Life needs balance. work, fun, rest, social connections. But our society pressures us to live without balance, to put no value on half of that. And then we wonder why depression and heart disease is so common

I agree now, that was kind of a weird part; sure the guy who spent 10 hours on Puzzles n Dragons didnt make that extra 60 bucks, but also doing an extra shift comes with its own set of caveats
Sometimes you just wanna relax and play a game, hell, oftentimes we NEED to goof off if we want to use the rest of our time well (I definitely still agree with the main point of the video tho ie. be Mindful of your time)

For me, the biggest time waster is the "idea pool".
As a game developer, I constantly get new ideas for games I want to make and either start a new project for every one (leaving me with a hundred started projects and none finished) or debate with myself for hours on what idea to start developing (leaving me with nothing done)...
In order to fix this I've started forcing different limitations on the idea pool in order to decrease its size (such as graphical/stylistic limitations, gameplay/genre limitations, topic/story limitations, console-style limitations, etc.) until, ideally, I only have one idea left in the pool and can just start working on that until I finish it.

However, if you would want to make something like that, maybe look into the history of Earth and/or the history of mankind, I'm sure you could make a game from that and keep expanding it indefinitely with new periods, new lands, new species, new ages, new frontiers... and so on. You could call it Life the Game and make it an MMO so everyone could play it together.

Someone might work a standard full-time job that doesn't have many options to pick up extra shifts or money so they convince themselves that there's a limit to what money will be available. I've learned that a lot of people are really skilled at certain things but they just don't know how to market that skill so they never make money from it.

He was spending 10 days doing his accounting and he needed half a day of work to pay for the accountant fee... He couldn't agree with that for some reason.

    • @Kalsifere

@S S Yes, but I think that there is a limit on how much of an expert you can become for something you do once or twice a year. He will probably never be able to do it in half a day. On top of that, what he is able to charge as a physiotherapist also increases yearly so the gap between what he can earn as physiotherapist and what he saves when doing his accounting might never close. If he wants to get new skills, there is a ton of trainings he can get as physiotherapist that might boost his income. I would understand if he enjoys the accounting part. I have learned a lot of skills that are not related to my job but they are hobbies to me. I don't when he struggles and complains about it.

I would say one thing for people who likes to listen to music, watch series, shows, movies, or even play games, and if you are the creative type, you will get ideas randomly at times.
For me, I do a little bit of everything depending my mood, and if it is just right, I get some ideas that I am more proud of than "brute force" it trough. It have helped me to not only be more creative as a writer and as an artist, but also be more knowledgeable when I search up information on Wikipedias about the world, concepts that are both low and high, learning something new every day.
So in my eyes, any entertainment with an imagitive mind will net you some results, but you will still need to be mindful of it, as if something takes too much attention from you, you will not be able to do what you love until you take a break.
For people who want to take notes, just take a phone or a notebook wherever you go, write down anything you can think of, let alone you are walking, at a resturant, or on holiday. Ideas comes and goes, and it is a powerful element to embrace.

One very important to thing to consider is how you spend your free time and avoid guild-tripping yourself over the past. A one simple, but powerful quote that I learned from Internet is: If you enjoyed your time doing something (like playing games, etc) - it's not a waste of time.
I played many games in my past - more than I should have, but it's exactly because of that now as a character artist I can see more clearly in which direction I want to grow, and in what projects I would love to work in!
I wanna do many things in my life, so rn I'm trying to dedicate more work time into various stuff and convince my brain that it's a normal life now. So every month I add a little more time limit to how much I work on stuff (1st month 1h, 2nd month 1h 15m), and then I try to maintain such schedule.
Being a perfect machine mentally drains tho, so recreation is a must, I do not really advise anyone to null fun in their day schedule as it's a tough - rn I dedicate 1-2 hours into games/movies, and weekends as a full-game/fun activity time, soooo

One thing to do is it figure out how much you want to get paid for your game and work backwards. Once you have that, you can get your hourly rate you would pay someone to do the work for you. Then, when you see a sale on a bundle or something that would save you time, you know it is a deal compared to how long it would take you to do it.
Also, It is going to take you a lot more time than a professional to do that work. That is something to factor in. At the end, if it is something you are selling, will it look as good? Probably not. So, you'll probably have to hire a professional to fix your work.
I try to remember the Red Adair quote - "If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur."

Hey, great video! I loved the way you explained why time is important and how we should value it more. However, I do have a slight difference of opinion on one part of the video.
At around the 3:08 mark, you talked about how your friend grinded for 10 hours to get some stones in a game, for me you made him sound like an idiot for wasting his time but that's just my opinion! also I don't think you fully understood why your friend was happy about his accomplishment.
In my opinion, your friend probably had fun while grinding for those stones, even though it did take up a lot of his time. He enjoyed the process and was satisfied with the outcome. Plus, he might be playing the game for free, so buying items might not be an option for him.
Therefore, I think it's important to acknowledge that everyone has their own way of enjoying things and achieving their goals. Buying items in a game might be a good option for some, but for others, the process of working hard and grinding for rewards is equally rewarding.
Overall, great job on the video and thanks for sharing your video with us!

Well, I personally think the 4 years I have at my job is wasted time at this point, but I can't seem to leave it, so I really don't know what that means.

If I don't apply the lesson from this video, can I consider watching it wasting my time? 🤔
But serious comment: Regularly thinking about your time:money ratio is amazing advice. Also works well for the opposite of what you mentioned-how many hours do I need to work to afford this?

Because life not threatened, so you have extra time from against disease and how today work more brutal to soul than body itself,
You either pick fight against people in harmless but enough to stressed about it
    Or
You go outside do what old time do and get 50/50% ..with guide or lost.

So, does this mean I should pay the $900 for the full version zbrush instead of spending the time to learn blender? I've heard zbrush is much more user friendly.

Meh, up to you. I like Blender because it's at a price I can afford (lol).
I think zbrush has a trial or something, you could try.

Only if you plan to sculpt full time professionally. Otherwise, I'd recommend either just going with the monthly plan, or just stick with Blender -

If you don't have a lot of extra cash laying around, just keep learning Blender. It is sufficient.
If you really, really enjoy 3D sculpting specifically and have a lot of money, I would buy Zbrush. The permanent license pays off in the long term, but only if you stick with it.

The problem man, its that i WANT to be productive. But i just sometimes cant. Sometimes, i enjoy being productive alot, but then... i just wanna play games. I dont wanna be productive. I wanna do what i want, and when i try to be productive anyway, i feel bad, like some kind of dread.
    Will this ever go away?

That feeling of "dread" when you need to do something is a symptom of ADHD. A ton of people have ADHD without knowing it.
      I have it.

Go outside for a walk, short run even if its 5-10 minutes, come back as your best self. A little blood flow to the brain shows in FMRIs that we just need a little push sometimes to get a go on in life. The feeling will subside, starting is the hardest part, even harder when the mind is tired and sleepy. You've got this!

Its not that simple... Its so much more complex in that you are equating all tasks with the same level of spoons (the mental effort it takes to do the task) for a lot of people it is easy to drown 10 hours into something to get a base level of dopamine just to function, yet when it comes to tasks they are resistant too its extremely hard to do them. Think of it like this: 10 hours of time playing that game for a cosmetic costs 0 psyche, working for 10 hours = -80/100 psyche points per day. Psyche points don't fully recover after a rest at a guaranteed or steady rate. Therefore the burnout of that hussle is a cost you are ignoring.

I think we missed the point of MEANING here, it is not all about money. For example, for those business men who make 1M per day will probably think we are wasting our time to master out CG skill, which make much less money.

I really hope the Story at 2:50 is as fabricated as it sounds.. While I 100% agree that if you are trying to monetize your work, there is no faster way to do it then to take shortcuts and buy the work that someone else already did. On the other side of the isle, there is 100% no reason to buy things if your goal is to learn how to make the things yourself. If that story was true, I feel so, so, so sorry for you and anyone that thinks that way. Your friend may have 'wasted' his time in your eyes, but he felt more real joy at that moment than you did while working to also 'waste' that money in the same thing he did. So at the end of the day, who is the real loser? He felt pure joy. you had to deal with Gerry for 8 hours, and then when to waste the 8 hours of earnings to make fail point.
TLDR: If you want to make money off of your art, yes buy addons and shaders etc. If you want to feel real pride in your art, 'waste' the time to learn how to do it yourself.
