Completely free power as long as you have a $12 stainless pipe, a $238 muffler, and a $400 wire feed welder just laying around. What's more simple than that?
In order to keep the AFR at a safe level without ECU tuning you should keep the catalytic converter and replace the muffler and resonator only, essentially installing a "cat-back" system. Since the Z900 has the resonator connecting directly to the headers it is best to just install a muffler and leave the cat and resonator in place, creating a "resonator-back" system. Also, it is important to note that removing the catalytic converter is illegal and can result in a 10k fine. Since you removed the catalytic converter and installed a free flowing muffler an ECU flash is needed to adjust the AFR to correct and safe level.
The Catalytic Converter is where most of the restriction comes from. How can you think this is any better than a full system replacement and will not require a retune? Getting rid of the breadbox will also shaves weight off of the bike.

I have the same beer can Leo Vince end muffler. And just to correct: the bike WILL NOT RUN LEAN. This is not a carburetor bike. These modern ECUs adjust the air fuel ratio accordingly. You just have to ride it a bit.
Thanks for the feedback! This is are a suitable option for some people. To play devils advocate, let me share why I didn't consider this option myself. I got a full akrapovic system on my z900 2018 and I would not say that it is stupid loud .. it sounds like a motorcycle, taking the db killer out just lowers the tone .. but yes a ecu flash are not official recommended from kawasaki but the bike will run much better after a ecu flash
How is this basically free? I thought you were just going to remove the bread box and replace with straight pipe, which would be low cost if not actually free. You removed the cat. Didn't that require a tune? You installed A Leo Vance slip on. Where can I get one of those for free? BTW, which part of this are manufacturers unaware of?
In the vid I mention I ran the stock muffler for a while as it's unrestricted. In fact, I didn't end up keeping the Leo on this bike as it was a bit loud for my preference. I spent a couple dollars on the piece of pipe ($12 total I believe) but you're correct about using a mid pipe if you prefer to not have welded. Can also bring to local exhaust shop to weld up to save money.
Hi. What if the bread box is removed and the cat is left. Would it improve sound?would it affect performance? I mean. Instead of removing what you did. Only Remove the bread box and adding a straight pipe that connects to the exhaust. Is that a good idea to improve sound?
Question: would keeping the stock muffler and simply replacing that middle pipe section still increase the sound loudness or does most of the change come from that leo vince slip on?
Both mufflers do a pretty good job of reducing db. Most of the sound increase comes from replacing the first muffler and the CAT. Very little sound difference just doing the slip on
Still need to flash it to the ECU, 100%. Doing this you’re running risks over time to the engine. Get it married up properly after, it’s not that pricey to flash it but while you’re there you might as well remap it 😂
Hi really a great video! I really want to try it myself. But i have one question, why doens't it need an aftermarket tuning after deleting the katalysator? The sensor will messure different values right?
Thanks Man! Technically you don't NEED a tune after even a full exhaust, but I like to do it. Taking out just the cat doesn't affect the AFR much at all on this bike. If you do the delete, checkout my video on 2wheel dyno works for your tune, they are great guys!
awesome explanation and video man. i have a question! i have z900 2019 model and i have cut down the bread box but did not cut the CAtalytic converter. i still have the catalytic converter on the bike. i am using an after market slip on after cutting down just the bread box. Do I need to use a power commander or remap the ecu now?
You will hear many opposing views on tune vs no tune. Its not that one is not right and the other is wrong, it just depends on your personal goals. If you are after best performance, than of course you will want an aftermarket tune. You really cant compare a bike with exhaust changes and no tune to a bike with mods and a tune, the difference is huge. If however, you are already satisfied with your current performance or your changes were minimal its not going to hurt the bike to run it with the stock tune. Hope that helps!
Superb you are. Thank you for replying. I was worried about engine issues later so thought of asking... I hope I won't have any engine issues with the current set up
I really liked your video, so thanks for doing it. It was pretty difficult to tell from the video, but did the volume of the exhaust go up after the modification at all? I know the sound changed, but I would like a bit more noise out of my SC Project exhaust and am wondering if this might be the solution. I don't like an exhaust that is obnoxious but I like to be heard. Also, did the modification do what you expected it would? Increased power, no popping? Thanks again!
Yes volume increase is noticeable but minimal (maybe 2-3db). It does increase power but not as much as full header would. My top recommendation to anyone wanting power and sound is headers. I really like my clone headers. Cheackout my “Akro Clone” video, I describe how to do the AIS blockoff which will prevent popping.
@@DirtGearTv I watched the clone akro video and after spending over $700 CAD on my slip-on I may try just the de-cat mod as I want to keep the cost down as much as I can. To be honest, after spending that much in the slip-on I was really disappointed with the sound. It is still a really quiet bike. I'm also less interested in power gains (it has good power) but the torque is fantastic. BTW I had to change the chain and sprockets recently so I knocked it down to 14 teeth on the front sprocket and went to a 520 chain.. the torque is nothing less than addictive. I would highly recommend doing this to anyone with a z900.
Yes unfortunately slip on alone doesn’t do much for these bikes in terms of sound or performance. I think you will be please with the sound improvement by deleting the CAT. Certainly for the cost of it it’s well worth doing 👍
Bro! Can you show sound is now without a second exhaust ??? On my Z900 I use the original lower exhaust only, I want to see how the sound changes if i make a pipe like you did, Thanks!!!
Don't think your bike is going to run great, u need a tune and definitely u need to disable your lamda, only thing u gain is noise, lots of it, just got of the dyno with my z900 from 2020, only put a slip-on and a sport air filter on it, disabled the pair valve (to get rid of the popping sounds) and disabled the lamda in the tune, makes 134,7 hp and 104 Nm torque (got the graff to prove it) the on-off is gone and got lot's off more power in the mid and high rev's. More sound = not more power!!! And a small tip, before u tune your bike, get a better front and rear suspension, i got the andreani inner front fork and a hyperpro rear.
That’s all I want to do as well. Are you sure no tune is needed? I have an m4 slip on and k&n air filter as well. I really don’t want to have to tune and flash ecu. I’m just looking for some more sound and want to make sure this won’t screw up anything? Great video and please let me know how it worked out ?
You should be fine without a tune, it’s deff not going to harm your bike but you’ll want to do the AIS block off to prevent decel popping. You should like the sound with a slip on and cat removal, not going to be loud but will have good growl to it
Ok perfect 👌🏼 I would do a full tune n let them dyno if I had to buy, honestly just like I said I want a lil more growl is all. Not interested in changing the response because I love it ! If there is a link for Ais I’ll order now 👍🏼. Now it purrs nicely and neighborhood friendly but, they will survive! Lol. 30-40percent meaner and I’m good. I definitely don’t wanna lose my bottom half. Thanks in advance. I’m getting both arguments from my group but, the ones I trust are with me lol. Love em but, some friends have no clue. I check n check ✅
Honestly, removing the CAT did more for the sound than the slipon as well as power. One of the reasons I made this vid was because of my disappointment with a slipon only. Watch my video on the clone header system if you want the best budget option! Good luck
I believe this is the one: www.ebay.com/itm/113533165622 I think you'll be happy with this mod. Also as a followup, I'm currently working on another "mod" video that will accompany this very well. Will be a killer combo, so stay tuned!
If I removed the primary muffler and replaced the secondary muffler with a slip-on, would it be too loud? The reason I want to do it that way is because then it’s still legal regarding emissions.
It will be quite loud. Depending on the slip on. Mine is very loud. I bought it that way though. I would suggest listening to exhaust videos if they are available.
You need to adjust A-F ratios otherwise the engine will run lean and overheat. Best case scenario it goes into limp mode. Seriously guys don't decat you bike, most of people will not be able to use the extra power and even with a power commander, it will only increase power at the top of the RPM range. Moreover, modern engines are built with the catalytic converter(and the backpressure thereof) in mind so it doesn't neccesarily "hurt" engine performance.
Back pressure isn’t a thing for making power or torque. Basically every bike makes more power bottom to top with a flash tune and opened up exhaust. Furthermore, just because you can’t ride your bike doesn’t mean the rest of us have that problem, the extra power is better to have and not need.
Man, you made this video noticed the shit sound… and you think hmmm i just Write some nice text and say sry for the Bad sound quality… but this is Beagle all about the sound. So u expect people to do the same with not knowing how it will sound. Would it be to difficult to take another shot?
His story about air/fuel ratio is incorrect. Nowadays bikes have lambda sensors to adjust the air/fuel mixture dynamically through a feedback control system to a set ratio by the manufacturer including any set limits by any goverment regarding emissions. In otherwords, Kawasaki engineers set a target air/fuel mixture in the ECU of the bike, the lambda sensor registers the emissions (before it is filtered by the cat), then sends it back to the ECU to adjust the mixture. Then why should you tune your bike anyways if thats the case? To adjust the target air/fuel ratio, because the best mixture for the most favourable emissions is not the same as for the most powerfull setting or the best economical fuel consumption setting. If you dont believe me, google a bit about lambda sensors and especially search some emission charts.
Ramses19912 What story? All you did was simply repeat what I say to people in my videos. Checkout the video on 2WDW and why an aftermarket tune is important.
@@DirtGearTv 1:10-1:45 yes you have to tune if you want to get the most out of it indeed. However, at 1:25 you state that you are going to lean out your mixture with a full exhaust system and that you have to throw more fuel at it (with a tune I assume you meant). This is not true as your ECU will automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio to whatever it has been set to in the ECU, it will not run leaner nor richer. On the practical side, you do need to account indeed that the bike will startup lean after an exhaust system/air filter upgrade and requires some time for the ECU to recover its air/fuel ratio. So in short, what I understand from what your saying is that you lean out your system by upgrading your exhaust system and that you need a tune to get the air/fuel ratio back on track (or better). What I’m saying is that it’s not necessary to tune your bike after such an upgrade as the air/fuel mixture will be restored by the bike it self over time (say 30mins?).
Ramses19912 It’s a common misconception that because a bike is fitted with a narrow band sensor the factory ecu performs the same functions as an advanced fuel management and wide band O2, in short it does not. Your factory narrowband sensor is not giving you an advanced reading of AFR it’s basically telling you it’s lean or rich and is very limited in its mixture adjustment. An aftermarket tune is a completely different, if it were the same thing dyno tuners wouldn’t be in business. So yes once you make any changes to exhaust you’re already outside the parameters your factory ECU will compensate for, this is why as soon as you change your exhaust the bike will pop on decel and we correct this by plugging the ais
DirtGearTv if the mixture adjustment is very limited then it wouldn’t make sense a tuner could fix that. The only thing a tuner does is adjusting the target AFR to what the wishes of the owner of the bike wants (more power/better fuel economy). It doesn’t make sense a control system is not capable of controlling its own system. A lambda sensor, doesn’t provide data about AFR, it provides data about emission particles as each AFR has its own composition of different emission particles like NOx and CO2, the ECU then translates this to an AFR and indeed concludes it is running lean or rich compared to the target AFR. But as we are speaking about a control system, which it clearly is, otherwise theres no need for that lambda sensor, it adjusts its AFR to converge to its steady state response. I own a z900 from 2018, when i took out the cat i had pops and bangs like you described, then went to a tuner because i wanted a smoother power curve and yet i still have my pops and bangs on decel. So if your theory was right this shouldn’t happen.
I have an fz09 with a cat on it, I was gonna take it off when I got the bike 30k miles later now its still on there Lol I'm going to do it soon I swear probably not though 😅
It's not entirely free power mod if you're going to cut and replace the cat converter with a stainless pipe and a Leo Vince. I'm sorry, misleading video.
Why would this do more than 9x % of aftermarket systems? A well dynod akra or scorpion full system will outperform your garage solution any day. But yeah, remove the cat... why even bother with low emissions right...
Why do you think the cat is there? Maybe not a bright idea to remove it. in US it might not be a thing, but if u remove the cat from bikes or cars in EU, you get a huge fine when caught, due to the EU 5 emission/polution standard.
@@louieg5766 it was a compliment buddy, don’t get your panties in a wad. He looks very young in that Tee as compared to the shirt. That’s all I said. Relax.
Isn't that irresponsible to remove the catalytic converter? I thought it was there to convert all the unburned fuel in the exhaust to prevent it from getting into the environment.
Ok first of all that's ass back words if you remove the cat. YOU DO NEED to tune the bike for what you want you should leave the cat cut off the exhaust expansion box or as you call it the bread box then fit a pipe from the cat to the muffler that is the right way to do it with out a tune. and will give you about a 10 hp increase taking out the cat. will lean out your bike getting rid of everything after the cat. will but the stock ecu will correct that small amount and yes i do have a z900 its a 2017 and i do know what i'm doing not trying to be a dick just stating the facts i mod bike for a living fyi. here is a vid. on the right wat to do it. ruclips.net/video/H37K7kH3f_c/видео.html
This is one way to do it, definitely not what I would call "the right" way. Also you can buy a connector pipe for like $60 on ebay for this mod rather than turning the bike into a chopped up turd. So I agree with you in part, however the ECU will not correct this much of a change in exhaust, it was never designed to. If it didn't require a tune than why does it lean pop after the change is made?
I dont see how you wont need a tune cutting out the cat.....u basically got a shitty header straight pipe with 2 open-ish mufflers.....a dyno run and with a tuner checking fuel would convince me
lost me at the welding part, as soon as i saw a mig/mag torch i was like seriously? seriously not gonna tig weld it instead? then on top of that some (...) quality welds being grinded the shit out of, nah man... not gonna take any advice from you thats for sure! xD
don't be farm mechanics pls. being wise or experienced in one field doesn't transfer that know-how-why to all other areas of one's life :} the gains are more on the feelings' side of things than actual bike performance in most cases of mods. (proper suspension setup makes the most noticeable improvement in any wheel based machine) is there a noticeable difference in performance between a full tank of gas and 1/4? that's 20lbs weight reduction and yet it's unnoticeable. who's able to gauge how much gas is in the tank by 'how torquey' the engine feels? even a best case scenario mod w/ 10% power increase is the same (a pipe can't do that alone)... racing is different because the machines are pushed to their limits. be nice be safe have fun everyone ps that's a nice exhaust tone.. but it's loud, it gets old quickly if you don't live in a loud city :}
Holy shit you don't know shit about modern EFI. In no way does a full exhaust cost you HP. It always results in a gain. The ECU adjusts air/fuel live. So opening up the exhaust will cause the ECU to compensate. The reason why a tune really opens up the HP and Torque is because from the factory, bikes are tuned for better fuel economy and emissions to meet Euro 4/5 mandates. Either a plug and play programming ECU pigtail (dynojet) or having a Dyno tune from a shop will change the factory air/fuel mix to something much more aggressive.
Think I'll stick with virtually every engineer and engine tuner and even exhaust manufacturers who have a huge r&d department over your none scientifical and un proven idea......
I think you ought to understand the purpose of the catalytic converter before making that biased comments. Hint : it is used in industrial chimneys and wind turbines. So umm, research, maybe?
I don't see the fascination with loud exhausts and silly little tin cans racer boys add to their bikes that sound like crap to everyone around you (except to your deaf ears). De-catting is illegal in some places and if you have smog regulations, you will fail the test. Don't forget your warranty - no right minded rider will want to void an already crazy short warranty these awesome machines come with. This type of mod only belongs in one place - on race only bike used exclusively on a track. If you are so concerned the police will know when you come and go and how fast you are going, then just slow down, drive reasonably. If you have nothing to hide, who cares if the police know or hear you. Paranoid much? Now with all the criticism I just laid down and before you delete my comment, I want you to know I really enjoyed the video and you seem to know your stuff. Thanks for sharing the video, I found some good info on it, even though I will not be doing this anytime soon on my beloved Z.
I don’t delete comments for people who differ in opinion, I like feedback. De-catting a bike is more common than you may think. What’s the first aftermarket move people make when you buy a bike? Exhaust. So the overwhelming majority are already “decatting” in reality no one cares about it on the bikes except maybe California. It’s a bit of a stretch to call me paranoid though. I’m close with the dozen or so police officers who are also my neighbors, who I also rode bikes with. People don’t buy sport bikes to always stay under the posted speed limit, neither does anyone buying a car for that matter, so let’s get real here. Maybe you’ve never broken the speed limit, but for the %99.9999 rest of us, i’m just trying to be respectful towards my neighbors 😜

Can you still use your stock muffler and still gain power by just cutting out the cat
Hi. What if the bread box is removed and the cat is left. Would it improve sound?would it affect performance? I mean. Instead of removing what you did. Only Remove the bread box and adding a straight pipe that connects to the exhaust. Is that a good idea to improve sound?
I’ve seen this mod and it does increase sound a bit. There are 3 system restrictions, cat, breadbox and muffler.
Nice Video. Did you think the bike has more than 91 db at 4750 rpm ?
Question: would keeping the stock muffler and simply replacing that middle pipe section still increase the sound loudness or does most of the change come from that leo vince slip on?
Both mufflers do a pretty good job of reducing db. Most of the sound increase comes from replacing the first muffler and the CAT. Very little sound difference just doing the slip on
bolt standard silencer on if you don't mind that's the way i want to go how does it sound ???
Cats are in the header too. Stock header very restrictive
Hi good day.. question! I own a z650 2018 and i want to upgrade a fork of z900. Do you think it’ll fit? Is it plug and play only? Pls reply.
How about the slip-on muffler do you need to tune it or no need?
awesome explanation and video man. i have a question! i have z900 2019 model and i have cut down the bread box but did not cut the CAtalytic converter. i still have the catalytic converter on the bike. i am using an after market slip on after cutting down just the bread box. Do I need to use a power commander or remap the ecu now?
Zero.1 my friend doesn’t run a remap and he is fine, no noticeable power loss! Just an amazing sound
Where do I go to get a free Leo Vince slip-on?
It can be even more fast?
That’s all I want to do as well. Are you sure no tune is needed? I have an m4 slip on and k&n air filter as well. I really don’t want to have to tune and flash ecu. I’m just looking for some more sound and want to make sure this won’t screw up anything? Great video and please let me know how it worked out ?
You should be fine without a tune, it’s deff not going to harm your bike but you’ll want to do the AIS block off to prevent decel popping. You should like the sound with a slip on and cat removal, not going to be loud but will have good growl to it
Thanks for quick reply. This is all I need n feel the same as you. Don’t want obnoxious loud I just want a lil more growl. Ya have link for ais?

@kaisersozee6541 did you end up removing the bread box?
What about the close together gearing?
So the exhaust fumes are more toxic now am I right?
Yes, exhaust not being processed through a catalyst anymore
Great video, looking to do this as well as get the ECU flashed by dyno. Could you let us know how long the replacement pipe is you are adding?
I measured the length of replacement pipe right around 145mm
Amazing video! So by putting the straight pipe you gained more low end torque but did you also get an improved sound??
Thanks and Yes, the sound was a pretty substantial improvement!
DirtGearTv ok thanks! Do you think a slip on exhaust would do the job for the sound or a full system will be better?
Honestly, removing the CAT did more for the sound than the slipon as well as power. One of the reasons I made this vid was because of my disappointment with a slipon only. Watch my video on the clone header system if you want the best budget option! Good luck
DirtGearTv ok thank you very much!
Do you have a better microphone? I would like to hear the sound after!
Thanks
I do, but the bike has been changed at this point so the sound wouldn't match if I record the current setup, sry
Any codes thrown by removing the cat?
Nope
Will the check engine light come on? If so, what do you recommend?
It shouldn't come on, if it does, put some miles on it and will go away
What kind of welding machine did you use? TIG? Thanks!
I'm currently using the Harbor Freight 170a/240v wire feed setup for mig. Its a surprising good little welder. I use it with flux core and gmaw

I think you'll be happy with this mod. Also as a followup, I'm currently working on another "mod" video that will accompany this very well. Will be a killer combo, so stay tuned!
Hi, does this mod need a ECU tune/flash?
Nahidul Haq It’s not absolutely necessary, however it’s a good idea to tune after exhaust changes are made
awesome, great video, very imformative
thanks this was so helpful
Glad it helped!
Great video!
In my state (PA), bikes are not tested for emissions.
@@kirkleidemann5051 Cool.
In my country, people sleep in beds.
Bro put the stock silence How sound...

Thanks dude!!
Lol that weld. Interesting mod.

A well dynod akra or scorpion full system will outperform your garage solution any day.

in US it might not be a thing, but if u remove the cat from bikes or cars in EU, you get a huge fine when caught, due to the EU 5 emission/polution standard.
And yet 2 strokes are in abundance in EU which produce 50x the hydrocarbon emissions

Isn't that irresponsible to remove the catalytic converter? I thought it was there to convert all the unburned fuel in the exhaust to prevent it from getting into the environment.
Depends on your local laws. No race vehicles use catalysts and when you put an exhaust on a bike you're removing it anyway
If it didn't require a tune than why does it lean pop after the change is made?

don't be farm mechanics pls. being wise or experienced in one field doesn't transfer that know-how-why to all other areas of one's life :}
the gains are more on the feelings' side of things than actual bike performance in most cases of mods. (proper suspension setup makes the most noticeable improvement in any wheel based machine)
is there a noticeable difference in performance between a full tank of gas and 1/4? that's 20lbs weight reduction and yet it's unnoticeable. who's able to gauge how much gas is in the tank by 'how torquey' the engine feels?
even a best case scenario mod w/ 10% power increase is the same (a pipe can't do that alone)...
racing is different because the machines are pushed to their limits.

You did realize in the video I'm advocating for "opening" up the exhaust right?
Free? We're did you get the free muffler, BTW sounds like poop

CAT removal “non proven” good one 😂
@@DirtGearTv well said. Much respect for you. Sorry for being so harsh in my post. I dont speed and the Z900 is plenty fast for me. Cheers.
