I just discovered what commonplace book is and I realize I have been doing that since I became reader. I usually write the tittle of the book and I keep notes as I’m reading. Now that I’m learning about commonplace book I might advanced the way I do it.

Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. (Ephesians 5:14) ruclips.net/video/kKwrdGBnMiU/видео.htmlsi=qXUCzlIQaXy95dp9
I started doing this a couple years ago to track devotions, spiritual life, art, designs, story ideas and stuff I needed reminding of. Changed my life!
One thing from college I learned is this. I took lots of notes and slowly read a book for Econ and got a C. The professor told me everyone else did well so just try harder. So I took zero notes the next test and instead consumed huge quantities or one container of preworkout over three or four days. I read like one hundred pages a day for three or four days and got an A on the test. Because I read the text for the test three times i remembered more then prior when I read it slowly and took notes.
Hey! that’s really cool information to know. Charlotte Mason has a quote in her book Home Education that showcases the same idea. Basically, simply repeating something over and over is enough to memorize it, no intense focused memorization required.
Do you still remember what you learned ? I find that cramming like that keeps information for a shorter time. Let me know if your experience differed from mine
@@THEPURRINGMACHINE I would wager that Kolton did not retain that information for very long - cramming is called that because you are stuffing data into your short term memory rather than actually learning anything (in the sense of it becoming deployable knowledge). But the note-taking technique *is* useful. I did my university days back in the time when we had to scratch our notes into stone tablets rather than using laptops and the act of paraphrasing the lectures quickly and on-the-fly really helped make things stick.
Thanks for your description of and ways to use a common place book. I’ve saved many quotes on my screen shots and I now have been thinking of putting them in to a book form. I found your video both enlightening and clarifying. Many thanks👍
My common place book is a A6journal that my retired grandfather didn't use! It was from 1989 and I had no heart to leave it empty so I started to write something. Not necessarily fancy or maintained. But to just write. Now I have my habit trackers, quotes, reflection of my thoughts, interesting math tricks, weird but interesting things about world, any drawing or a simple doodle, a list of things to research about, to dos, reminders, something that made me happy or something that I learnt new about people and places. It's like a journal cum common place book? I always write something in it everyday. Turning the pages and seeing my messed up drawing attempt on a human nose does make me giggle!
That’s really cool! I keep a similar notebook with daily to do lists, and random thoughts that pop up. I’m sure it will be really interesting to look back in a few years and see how times have changed!
Yes. I haven't written my shopping items in a commonplace book, but apart from quotes etc I use it to sketch out my own ideas as inspired by what I've just read, but also together with things long ages since read.
I’ve been doing something like this for decades; but I never thought to copy the hightlights from a Kindle to my notebooks. Good tip to reinforce what I found worthy to mark. Currently reading, Robert Greene’s 50th Law, Iain Banks’s Use of Weapons, and the Jakarta Method.
I found it really interesting that you added a dot next to an interesting quote! It feels a little awkward seeing people buy new expensive books and then write all over them lol the dot seems good for the individual and not too distracting if the book ends up being sold or gifted!
Annotating books has a long, long history; some of the greatest minds have done it. According to Ben McCavoy (sp?) by doing so you are carrying on a conversation with the author and their work and ideas. Generally, if a book is super rare, super expensive, unique, fragile, etc. then you wouldn't want to write in it. You would either get a cheap copy, or write your thoughts and ideas in a separate notebook. Ultimately, the writing in a book isn't inherently "bad" in and of itself. It is only so if one or more of the above conditions is met.
This semester my English teacher made us start a CB and I started filling in my own pages of quotes from webtoons and shows I usually put a theme, picture, some notes along with the quotes
Oh, that's a great idea. To remember something or to understand it, I need to take the time to write notes, so I write summaries on a computer. But a physical notebook for quotes and ideas that you can flick through offline is a great idea. Gotta say, that's a fabulous looking room you're in.
i guess i have a common place book too, but i saw it as just a book i collect ideas an thoughts i have in hopes i can you use them when i write my stories
More people need to be reading. I have a playlist of 65 videos of my giveway at work. I thrifted 532 books for 88 dollars and 75 dvds for 22 dollars for my book giveway at applebees ( 3701 Veterans Memorial Blvd, Metairie, LA 70002). I have given away 3200 books in 10 months to babies, kids, teens, and adults.❤😊 I love connecting people to books
I've been doing this for decades, rather without any hierarchy between worth note-taking and just clearing out my mind. So, it's an all-in-one notebook. But ... but my handwriting's often so awful that I scarcely look up what I wrote before :/
Aleatoriamente eu descobri que isso ajuda na produtividade se você anotar reflexões noturnas, mas não sabia que pessoas históricas usaram "commomplace book".
Last time I bought an English bible simple to read and for me it's helpful because I notice a lot of English people uses words difficult to understand. I'm French and I'm learning English on my own without no one who teach me . I try to learn step by step but English seems to be a big tree .American and Australian even in UK each one of them speak their own way the result is English becomes a lot of languages .is not the same I speak Spanish and exist one way to speak Spanish. I may go to South America and i understand people .English is a true challenge. Could I ask you a question please? Do you understand all people who speak English? all over the earth ? Why is so difficult English language ? I'm RICHARD coming from LYON in FRANCE
hi Richard! Yes I can generally understand English from all over, it just has a different accent depending on where the person is from. I'm not sure why English is so difficult, for me French seems difficult....
I’m confused. Five or six times have I lately seen this concept “common-place book” pop up and I’ve never heard it before. Finally I bite and watch a video on it, but to me this is just…a notebook. Does anyone use a notebook differently than is described here? Back in pre-internet times maybe, for itinerary and log books (but that’s a log book) but today? It’s a notebook. For notes. And maybe some doodles but I feel like any piece of paper that isn’t a legal document is also for doodling so I feel like it doesn’t count. And don’t say : “I just use my notebook for drawing stuff”. That’s a sketch book
a lot of people use notebooks to write things about themselves aka journaling. I think that's usually more common. I guess the difference with this is that you focus on other people's ideas rather than your own, and keep it in one designated journal.
Hello Lesya, great video! I ahve a question - at timestamp 2:10 were you writing backwards? It also seems like you were reading backwards later on. Just curious. Thanks.
Heyyy, this video was very helpful. Would you say that having a common place book digitally is the same or is a physical one in that regard better for retention? Hi! So I tried having a commonplace type of thing online and for me it didn’t really work, maybe because of how I formatted it, or because having a physical copy rather than digital feels better for some reason. I also think writing helps retention better than typing, and having a physical book to review old quotes also helps with retention. Also, thanks so much for the feedback, I will keep that in mind!
@lesyadudik Well, I highlight all the truly important places in the book. I try to highlight that only if it is something truly outstanding, so I do not end up with an overwhelming amount of quotes. I store the best of the best quotes in an app called Evernote, but there are many similar apps. That makes the quotes searchable and categorized. In the end, though, I do not know that there is any one method that truly works for me. I'm still searching... :)

I use pencil dots even in library books. Then when I make my notes I erase the dot. 😊

Unless you are a phenomenon of memory, this method wont make you remember almost anying. You are jost copy pasting phrases and re-reading them
if you reread it often enough it'll stick.
Nah, synthesizing information and making connections between what you read>how you feel>what you experience is an excellent way to improve memory.
