@@gmodderr just wait. He probably will. I already hate the fact that he destroys good vintage stuff. I’m gonna be mad af if he breaks something like these
guys just let the guy do his thing, he isn’t doing anything fucked up sure it’s kinda sad he has smashed many old speakers but whatever, move on with it, don’t be a dick for no reason
On a second speaker there seem to be something between voice coil and magnet, that's why it does sound like this. I have experimented with a lot of soviet era speakers and most of doing like this has some stuff, mostly iron dust, between voice coil and magnet causing scratching sound with low frequencies. Nice collection, thanks for upload.
DAM the Henry sounded amazing....kinda sounded and looked like a vintage JBL...just think if that bad boy was in a cabinet....with a powerhorn tweeter !
Thanks for posting! Dont get to see many of the European speaker/horns and working too. It is very interesting to hear what historic speakers sound like. They all have amazing designs.
A tip, instead of rotating over the top (thus turning the camera up-side down, which is very confuzing to watch) then simply go around the speaker and film it from the front/from with the camera at it's correct position, it's very interesting to watch the old speakers and I'd like to see them filmed better. :) You still get a thumbs up for having such a fine collection.
I'm amazed how good most of these sound in the vocal range. None of them wanted to go below about 200 Hz without distortion, but the voices were amazingly intelligible. if combined with woofers and tweeters,(using these for the midranges) they could be made to sound better than anyone would expect. It would be a lot of fun to try that. In my opinion, the free standing Henry electrodynamic speaker sounded the best of all of them, by a close margin. There was one, in a wood enclosure, that sounded "metallic" to me, so it's not one I would consider. Even the horns sounded like they could be high fidelity midranges. As midrange speakers, I would run them between 400 Hz, and about 5,000 Hz.
those are high impedance speakers, >1 kohm so you can't use it directly to any moder amplifier, you need a transformer to step up the 8 or 4 ohm from the source amplifier to the one matching your speaker.
Thanks - The original quality is always the same, music is from the same CD. But: the speakers are not all restored and repaired, they don´t sound all, as they could do.
Excellent work! A tip, I suggest playing old songs and new songs. I don't know the quality of the original recording of the music, so it is difficult to see/hear the quality of the speaker. Thank you!
am i the only one that wants to take a pair of those beautiful Henrey Magnos speakers out on a date? vintage audio equipment really is so romantic after all.
Would you please be so kind as to put a song list together as to what you played? There is some here that I don't know the name of, but would love to play for some swing dance nights. Thanks :)
speakers back then had a lot of style to em and verity also with each having its own style of sound compared to today's which nearly are all black and simple which is nice but these old ones had style to em
I bet that those speakers sound more naturaly and nicer more than half of todays speakers. In that days people listened MUSIC not a vibrating air which is called dubstep or something like this
Are you impedance matching with these systems? These can't just be driven by a modern amp, or you get the awful sound you seem to be getting. Modern speakers use a high impedance drive on a low impedance load. These speakers are expecting the opposite, and impedance matching means a 600 (or more) ohm output impedance.
The Blue Vintage Some of the moving iron speakers literally took the high impedance plate circuit current of the audio output tube. No audio output transformer at all.
fascinating amp pre mosfet pure and powerful. timewarp speakers give u a crook back in the day. MULLARD schematic as mechanical to mechanical vibrator, rollover Baethoven and then there was light.
Where are the enclosures for some of these? Many look that they've been pulled out of a cabinet or maybe from behind a wall. Bass response is poor running like this.
Many of these old speakers were made to be practical and not for reproducing music. Many of the better speakers of that era were huge horns, like RCA cinema speakers.
They're more better for reproducing speech not music weighed down with heavey bass some of them date back to the early 20s when Crystal radios where invited
I simply love them for wild nature hi hi. They do what were supposed to - 0,75 W power pushed with middle frequencies. Unfortunately today they are loaded with bass too. It was forbidden then. But overall impression overpasses most of today's crap. Nice non fatigue treble and middle. My last construction I made with German drivers made in 1959 -tweeters too. Already some audio lovers press me to sell them but no way - I want them for me :). I will make video later. My project before (with modern drivers) You check and listen in my videos "Ultimate reality speaker system"
No. They have a very high Qts due to their low Xmax and low compliance. An infinite baffle or open baffle is best suited for these historic speakers. Otherwise they would sound best in their original enclosures.
thumbed down because you spend 90% of the video showing the back of the speakers and only 10% showing the front and even then its at a weird frustrating angle. Why can't we see what they look like head on?
using the old horn-speakers .... please cut the low tones or at least do NOT boost them! They were totally not produced to render under 200Hz! I wonder also what wattage you're driving those! Most of those speakers can (only) handle 1 up to 2watt. (some up to 10 watts) Never use a speaker-chassis without at least placing them on some board or in a baffle. Sorry, but you are a "speaker-killer" and not a speaker-lover!
There's something nice to see a vintage speaker being used and not smashed up Garrett
Luckily he does not smash up these kinds of speakers though
hated that fuking garret

I don't know about anyone else but I like the way these old speakers sound
Thanks for the wonderful video giving a look back. Great to see and hear them working!
The Henry one is the best, the Philips both rattle but could be fixed and they sound good.
Thank you very much for sharing this interesting loudspeaker collection, it really is a great pleasure to watch!

@ 2:50
That Philips speaker doesn't seem to rattle as much as most of the other speakers. Nice video's by the way! :-)
he guy posting this is overloading the speakers.Plus probably pushing on the low-end with some tone-control.
Thanks for your comment. The music seems to be recorded this days, but I don`t know when it was played first...

My mother liked that sound. Reminded her of scratchy 78's.

is the "Brown" a dynamic/moving coil or a reed/magnetic speaker? looks like a strange hybrid between a cone speaker and a horn speaker...
Great video that shows how technology first started to change and hiw it ended up where it ia today.
How do you use the Speakers? I have one from 1929 but the plug has 4 metal prongs it’s a ATWATER KENT F-4 Speaker.
those are high impedance speakers, >1 kohm so you can't use it directly to any moder amplifier, you need a transformer to step up the 8 or 4 ohm from the source amplifier to the one matching your speaker.
have you tried playing modern music on that stuff
If you put a wooden plank or box around around the front part the sound will be much fuller: a modern speaker without sounds +/- the same
super thank you very much gr jan
The Henry Magnos is a 15inch speaker, total dimensions [cm]: 39x41x22, the magnet has 8,5x16(d) cm
Thanks - The original quality is always the same, music is from the same CD. But: the speakers are not all restored and repaired, they don´t sound all, as they could do.
Interesting, but why didn't you move the microphone on-axis for some of the speakers?
Excellent work!

Thank you for letting us hear those rare old speakers.
They are all interesting. Some are very attractive.
Is the music played as old as the speakers?
That Henry Magnos had one heck of a sound! I was quite impressed by the high end extension it had! What was the size of the speaker?
It's a 15.4" Full-range AlNiCo driver. Probably rated for about 25-35W of power but I could be wrong.
15 inch probably used as a cinema speaker
Whats the name of the music from 5:46 ?
Esse alto falante Henry Radio tem um grave macio suave de ouvir

I agree very impressive
most speakers have no cabinet and still sounded fine.
On what impedance these speakers operate?
Yes, it´s a moving coil system
speakers back then had a lot of style to em and verity also with each having its own style of sound compared to today's which nearly are all black and simple which is nice but these old ones had style to em
You can real tell the difference between the wound voice coil and the old needle driven cones.
I bet that those speakers sound more naturaly and nicer more than half of todays speakers. In that days people listened MUSIC not a vibrating air which is called dubstep or something like this

did you repair it?
I haven´t yet repaired all of them, some sound not good...
no, it has a permanent magnet with a coil, a telephone-system
they're pretty awful for sound but I think they would be good for a electric guitar speaker.
I loved all of’-em! I would’ve amplified my TV audio with every speaker, I could find! 🧔🏻
6:00 that speaker, was the beginning of the sub for cars xD
Does anyone rebuild vintage electrodynamic speakers? I am wanting to restore a 1929 RCA radio.
For my taste a speaker from behind is much more interesting, but the front and back views could be more balanced...
Again, several speakers sound as though they are either mis-adjusted or over-driven.
number 3 is SO quiet!
Killer super cool

this speaker was when they bought them €100,- per one!
when bass were for luxury !
Play bad karma then we will get some bass rolling
They would like to say these from other planet
I bet if you play some drum and bass on these speakers, all you will hear is the drum.
Many of those speakers need baffles to sound as they should.
No. They have a very high Qts due to their low Xmax and low compliance. An infinite baffle or open baffle is best suited for these historic speakers. Otherwise they would sound best in their original enclosures.
not vintage enough for my taste. ;-)
This is why nobody bothered to buy iPods back then.
There wasn't even a Steve Jobs Back then for them to find any I pods around.
what is the name of the song on 1:58?
The song is Wabash Blues.
