Kiel is the capital and most populous city in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein, with a population of 246,243 (2021).
Kiel lies approximately 90 kilometres (56 mi) north of Hamburg. Due to its geographic location in the southeast of the Jutland peninsula on the southwestern shore of the Baltic Sea, Kiel has become one of Germany's major maritime centres, known for a variety of international sailing events, including the annual Kiel Week, which is the biggest sailing event in the world. Kiel is also known for the Kiel Mutiny, when sailors refused to board their vessels in protest against Germany's further participation in World War I, resulting in the abdication of the Kaiser and the formation of the Weimar Republic. The Olympic sailing competitions of the 1936 and the 1972 Summer Olympics were held in the Bay of Kiel.
Kiel has also been one of the traditional homes of the German Navy's Baltic fleet, and continues to be a major high-tech shipbuilding centre. Located in Kiel is the GEOMAR - Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel at the University of Kiel. Kiel is an important sea transport hub, thanks to its location on the Kiel Fjord (Kieler Förde) and the busiest artificial waterway in the world, Kiel Canal (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal). A number of passenger ferries to Sweden, Norway, Lithuania and other countries operate from here. Moreover, today Port of Kiel is a popular destination for cruise ships touring the Baltic Sea.
Kiel's recorded history began in the 13th century. Before then, in the eighth century, it was a Danish village. Until 1864 it was administered by Denmark in personal union. In 1866 the city was annexed by Prussia and in 1871 it became part of Germany.

•The Germaniahafen in the Kai-City Kiel in the Schleswig-Holstein state capital Kiel is a harbor basin for guest sailors and traditional ships in Gaarden-Ost, which was completed in 1998. The Germaniahafen is 28 meters wide and 130 meters long. It is located directly opposite the main train station, can be reached directly from there via the Hörn bridge and is practically a side arm of the Hörn. During the construction of the port, special attention was paid to ecological sustainability. In the immediate vicinity, the high-rise center at Germaniahafen was completed in 2007.
•Holstenplatz is a rectangular square in the suburbs of Kiel, encompassed by the lower Holstenstrasse, the Ziegelteich, Andreas-Gayk-Strasse and the Schevenbrücke. It is part of the pedestrian zone in downtown Kiel.
•Theater Kiel is a theatre company in Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is jointly funded by the city and the state. The company produces opera, musical, ballet, plays, and theatre for youth and children, in three different buildings: the Opernhaus (completed in 1907), the Schauspielhaus, and the Theater im Werftpark.
•The Kiel City Hall is the city hall of the Schleswig-Holstein state capital of Kiel. The 106 m high town hall tower is one of its landmarks.
•The Hiroshimapark is a green area in the center of the Schleswig-Holstein state capital Kiel. It is located between City Hall and Kleiner Kiel and commemorates the first atomic bomb dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
•St. Nikolai is the name of a Protestant parish and its church in Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is the town's oldest building, at the Alter Markt. It was dedicated to Saint Nicholas. In the 19th century, it was remodeled in Gothic Revival style. Destroyed in World War II, it was rebuilt with a simpler contemporary interior.
•Kiel Maritime Museum is a museum in the German city of Kiel. It was established in 1978 in what had been the fish-auction hall in the Sartorikai area of the city. It shows the maritime history of Kiel.
•The Kunsthalle zu Kiel is an art museum in the German city of Kiel. With 2,000 m2 of display space, it is the largest museum in the city. It is north of the city centre on Düsternbrooker Weg. It has a lecture hall, a small cafe and a sculpture garden.
•The Old Botanical Garden in Kiel (German: Alter Botanischer Garten Kiel) (2.5 hectares), also known as the Old Botanical Garden on the Fjord (Alter Botanischer Garten an der Förde), is a former botanical garden and arboretum located at Düsternbrooker Weg 19, Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is open daily without charge.
•The Kiellinie is a promenade in the Düsternbrook and Wik districts of Kiel.
