Stayed there twice as a child, once when it first opened and can still remember the red tartan carpet all through the hotel! It was a beautiful hotel in its day. Great video sad and haunting
I have followed your vids for a long long time. But this has to be one of your best ever coverages and most colourful I have viewed. I'm from Ireland and the Atlantic can throw the worst and best at you. I do think this hotel is beyond saving. Guys keep up the good work. I'm an avid admirer. You are not trophy hunters but modern day archaeologists without the shovel, trowel and brush. But the Camera Lens is your tool of choice.....well done.
This means a massive deal! It's brilliant to read that despite the high amount of videos we've made, we are still producing what you would consider our bets to date. Makes us very enthusiastic to continue for a long time :)
Late last year (2020) it was announced that this hotel was to be redeveloped as part of a large refurbishment and redevelopment in and around Bunbeg. The newspaper reports I saw said that the company concerned would change the use of this building into separate, own-key apartments for holidaymakers and other visitors. The proposals seem to have been welcomed locally; and I suppose they are much better than having two decaying hotels in your town. (Yes, there's another one.) As so many commentators here have said, the site is stunning; and from my own visits I know how beautiful the whole area is. A beautifully filmed and edited video. Thank you!
This would make for a perfect filming location for HBO's #TheLastofUs. If you've seen the videogame, you'll know what I'm talking about but if you haven't it's basically about infected people living in a post apocalyptic world. It would cost the production team thousands to recreate the look and style that this hotel offers and yet it's here in its untamed natural beauty. Thanks for taking the time to film and sharing your experience with us.
STUNNING photography of some of those rooms. Ireland is so beautiful and that site is extraordinary. I hope someone is able to reclaim the property. Thanks!
Wow lads what a video. Stunning choice of location, but for me the level of decay and the property's prior use as a hotel and its slow return back to nature made it outstanding choice for your video. Your captured video footage fully highlighted the transformation from its past to the present and also gave us a glimpse of its future if its not restored. Outstanding work guys and thanks for letting us join you on your travels!
No problem, happy that you enjoyed the video. We aim to showcase the transformative decline of buildings like this so it's always nice to hear it worked out
Three hotels in that area went in to receivership and were sold over the course of a few years. Two have come out of it with dedicated new owners, new facilities, an extra star rating in the case of one of them. So there is business, if you have the right owner and the cash to put in to it... too late here.
Thanks guys that was incredibly interesting to see how nature in such a short time can take all those rooms over with the foliage, but it looks like the building was built of concrete possibly and definitely the worst thing that could’ve built it with was a flat roof on an exposed place like that it must’ve cost an absolute fortune in heating with those large windows but that was a typical 1970s look
Such a waste of a building, but so much beauty in the decay we need to have so much respect for nature. As nature gave us so much but can take it all away only in time
Industry and leisure go hand in hand I think. Look how many pubs and social clubs have shut over the years with the decline of the mining and manufacturing industries, particularly in the north. They were built to serve the working man and his family.
Location, location, location. It needs levelled and rebuilt with modern materials that can withstand the Atlantic coastline and I'm certain that it would be a goldmine. The beauty of the area is stunning and with proper marketing the hotel would be a terrific asset to local tourism.
Wow! Stunning location and what fabulous views. The decay in some of the bedrooms is beyond belief and absolutely spectacular but what a shame. It really would take a mammoth amount of work and time to restore this one. Great work guys!
Ah the Ostan. Holidayed there as a boy. Tragic. Ran into the ground by the family after the father passed. Apparently it's to be torn down and replaced with a health spa and gym. The other hotel up the road is also abandoned. Same family.
Seaview, yep. Gaoth Dobhair used to be hoping with tourists when I was a kid. My family is from there. I'll be buried there next to my dad, with Errigal looking on. Not yet though. 😂
I stayed there a few times when it first opened in the early 70’s and attended a wedding there years later, it was a beautiful place in a fantastic coastal location in Derrybeg, west Donegal, sad to see it go to ruin like that .
A beautiful location. The decay in this hotel is amazing. It goes from one extreme to the other. I assume it's either plumbing that's failed or the usual leaking roof one gets with these flat roofed concrete buildings. Somehow I can't see this building ever getting saved. The cost I think will prohibit anyone renovating it. Well done for bringing this video to us. You do a fabulous job
We are pretty sure that it was a roof fault or lack of service during the building's period of activity that caused the leaks as you say. Some parts of the building could be saved but the majority in a brutal state of decay will make it very difficult. Thank you for the support.
I just been over on holiday around this area of donegal my mother and late father are from this area not to far away, I remember being in this hotel with my family and relations who live very close by.i took a drive up the tarmac ramp with my brother, just sat there for a short while remembering how it was back in the day,so sad to see its demise, but hearing from the locals I have that spoken to they were saying construction work is going to take place into next year would be great to see it back to its former glory.
It’s as though someone just simply locked the door and walked away.. it’s eerie how the beds still have bedding on them, paperwork just laid as it would have been and crockery in the kitchens..
An incredible explore. I've never seen anything like this, in all your explorations or anyone else's explores. Was very beautiful once, although the architecture looks at odds with all the old homes in the background.

I have to say lovely drone footage thank you for what you do weather it’s industry or not it’s just as beautiful Why do people have to vandalise places like this Whoever does vandalise properties like this they should be ashamed of themselves
Stayed there soon after the hotel was built. It was a very striking and futuristic building for the time. Maybe not to everyone's taste, but I think that the deliberate contrast of the building and its surroundings somehow worked. A bit like a spaceship on the moon. If you've watched early 1970s Sci-fi you'll get the idea. The original interior was also very beautifully done. Details like dark wood complimented a stong design focus and colours. The hotel lobby, the gift shop and details like bedrooms doors seem to have been all altered at some point from the original - with 1970s style round brass handles to white doors with modern ones. I think the hotel later lost some of its better design features to these changes over time It certainly would have been amongst the first wave of purpose hotels in the west of Ireland. The indoor swimming pool was a fairly luxurious addition for the time. Sadly there seems to be few if any early photos of the interior. Around the time of the hotels later closure and financial difficulties - there were also a number of compensation culture type claims. One involving an unsupervised child falling off the balcony and another for a relatively minor injury some considerable time after the alleged incident. I think as a hotel it was a building of its time and is now being reclaimed by nature - though it would be good a thing if those who visit just to deliberately destroy things up and make a mess - would catch a grip.
I remember as a young boy visiting this beach, Bunbeg/ Middletown on my summer holidays in this Irish speaking area called the Gaeltacht. I was there to learn Irish. I remember when this hotel was being built and in the years that followed was horrified with this ugly structure. It didn't blend in at all with the surrounding landscape. Back in those days there was nothing more than little welcoming cottages. As the years progressed and the local inhabitants started to build hideous developments all around.. It didn't look so bad. Their lack of anything edifying made it a jewel in the crown. I even stayed in this hotel on two occasions and enjoyed the outside porch on a lovely day. I'm sad to see it in the state it's in but I do hope it brings other structures of its ilk with it.

We were always given a beach view bedroom.Great memories !!! It would be fantastic to see it refurbished and open for business again.
HI JOHN JUST READ YOUR CAPTION , I AGREE TOTALLY WITH WHAT YOU HAVE SAID ,AND NOTICE YOU SAY YOU DROVE UP FROM [ CORK ] THAT HAPPEN'S TO BE WHERE MY FAMILY COME FROM .
My family and I spent many holidays in this area and were in the hotel quite a few times. Many days spent on the beach below. I loved the way the hotel sat majestically there above the beach. It is a beautuful mellow looking building and the white colour it is painted is striking. I am surprised that the building was allowed to decay like this as this area in Co.Donegal is one of outstanding natural beauty. Could the local council not do something to save the Ostan Gweedore - Hotel Gweedore?
I was there as a child, pity to see it like that now,but great for you too document it,ps the bedrooms are gone green as the roof has major leaks and the glass is missing
Amazing! Those rooms look like Stranger Thing's 'upside down' has broken through in Ireland. Great exploring and insightful commentary. If nothing else should win best Urbex video thumbnail of 2021! Thanks everyone 👍📸🔦😎
I had many a great drink in the hotel over the years. Beautiful location. I was last in this hotel in September 2013 ...you had the feeling it was on it last legs...nearly empty on that evening. Sad.
This was bewildering in the extreme, the decay was so random in places. Besides that, why is this building in this state? I would of loved to have spent a short break here the view was something else...one of your finest films..I enjoy the industrial sites you film, you really get a feel for what went on there for them to be productive. Great film as always.
Couldn't agree more Jo-Jo. Must say this video was out of this world, Had me hooked from the 1st second. Those 23 minutes just flew right by. If only I had the creative talents on Show here😢 Get yourself to Hollywood broski Definitely potential to be the next Spielberg
Water. It will totally destroy a building left unchecked. The west coast of Ireland gets enormous amounts of rainfall and we don’t get enough hot weather to dry things out. But a roof won’t leak equally everywhere so the decay is localised with other parts being relatively unscathed.
Thanks all! Put a lot of work into this one so good to hear it was well received. We wouldn't have minded if this was the BNB on our trip either - such a stunning building in a picturesque location.
@@Dreyno If you build too near the sea, the sea could flood and destroy any property which is to near. Look at the flooding of houses that we hear about on the news: this happens because the houses were built too near a sea or some other large body of water, which overflows because of too much rain and the residents' living-rooms get flooded. No matter how beautiful the sea is, it is never a good idea to build too near it.
Beautiful, but what a waste of resources. At least they could have given the blankets to the Red Cross, to help people in troubles after an earthquake or a tsunami. Thanks for the video, it's fascinating to watch through a window open onto the past and see how we were then 😊
Great content and even greater reminder to us all of the sacred power of Mother Nature, through all that concrete, brick, wood and glass, she comes to reclaim.
Thanks for exploring this place, I live in Dublin and had the privilege to stay in it many years ago at a Christmas do, it was fantastic in it's prime 👌
I've seen more decay in a room bedroom too in a house close to me in Northern Ireland and I love it it'd beautiful, plants growing from the bed and moss and greenery everywhere even tho the rest of the house isn't as bad
The beach next to it was the first place I ever drove a car, used to go to a nearby smaller hotel on family holidays but don't remember the area around that hotel being all that busy, that would've been around 2008 - 2010.
Cannot believe you would let a hotel in such a beautiful coastline just sit there and rot away great video guys if I had the money I would certainly snap.it up and restore it better do the lottery this weekend here's hoping.
beautiful hotel ,such a shame its been allowed to get in this state ,it could be converted into holiday or private apartments they would always be occupied with the gorgeous view .
I remember it being built in the 1970's, looked out of place back then and hope it gets demolished soon as it's more of a blot on the landscape. I hated when those wind turbines were put up on the hill, but have now got used to them, but can't get used to this eyesore. It never had any soul as a hotel and hence the reason it never survived.
The west coast of Ireland has numerous hotels situated in bays and coves like this I’ve worked on a few and because of the salt air and Atlantic storms rolling in the hotels need a lot of maintenance, check any hotel on the west coast and admire the sunsets, as for the vandalism it’s about time people began to take pride in their own area and start robustly charging vandalism as a hate crime
Who ever allowed this building in such a great place should be charged and thrown off the cliffs... I've seen prisons with better design. I'm glad nature vandalized it :p
The Very famous shipwreck is like 20 yards in front of this hotel. I always think Innishsirrer would make an amazing abandoned youtube video, for which, there are very few video's. Time to borrow a Currach!. Thanks for sharing
Its not called the 'Wild Atlantic' for no good reason that's for sure. I was just showing my son Bad Eddie here in Belfast who says it 'Looks Cool', so, its on the 2022 bucket list with Donegal's Inishboffin & Tory both looking amazing, wild, & incredible, with an awesome history to boot.
Post-Apocalyptic film-set in places, never seen anything quite like it. I can think of several reasons for the massive water ingress over a comparatively short period of...8 years? 1- Right on the water's edge, hammered by the Irish weather which is, if nothing else, wet and windy at times 2- If there was any lead or copper flashing/gutter linings on the flat roof the lower echelons of the gypsies would have been in like a shot, ripped it up and weighed it in at the local scrap merchants. 3- If profits were falling the management would have neglected general maintenance, and probably ignored the roof (out of sight out of mind) knowing that the bomb would drop sooner or later. 4- There's generally some sort of acrimony when a place of that size closes down, and it's feasible that someone took vengeance on this the most vulnerable part of the structure in their last week of employment, on the basis that 'if i can't have this place, no-one is going to have it- let the rains do their stuff'. Architecture from the fifties through to early eighties has a reputation for being fugly, and it does shock me that a design that looks like the control complex for a soviet radar installation managed to get planning permission in such a beauty spot (funny handshakes or wads of hard cash, presumably).....Or perhaps there's something underneath it that needs to be hidden from justice.. Cue conspiracy theories:
I spent the night before I got married in this hotel. Unbelievable to see it looking like this now. But also strangely hauntingly beautiful too. I remember falling asleep with the curtains open so I could see and hear the sea.
What’s the name of the hotel?
It must be tragic seeing a memorable building for you in this state. Can only imagine evenings spend hear with the sea roaring outside!

Wondered it be a hotel or apartment s
Tbh its a supposed €15 million investment in 2 hotels in the area. It will take every penny of that to get this close to useable. Probably be levelled and a construction built in modern materials..

This had an air of sadness about it. Shame to see such decay.

This hotel did locate in a wonderful coast and I think it is still worthy for a refurbishment.

Lucky if the council fix a pothole!
Stunning location, the decay is just beautiful.
the music suits this video, perfect choise who ever chose it.well done boys.
I was there as a child, pity to see it like that now,but great for you too document it,ps the bedrooms are gone green as the roof has major leaks and the glass is missing
2017 and 2018 I explored here, the decay since then is amazing. Shame about the vandalism.
Amazing! Those rooms look like Stranger Thing's 'upside down' has broken through in Ireland. Great exploring and insightful commentary. If nothing else should win best Urbex video thumbnail of 2021! Thanks everyone 👍📸🔦😎
That was along the lines of what we were thinking! Glad you liked the thumbnail image and video :)
Amazing...thankyou
I had many a great drink in the hotel over the years. Beautiful location. I was last in this hotel in September 2013 ...you had the feeling it was on it last legs...nearly empty on that evening. Sad.
Those ferns are crazy! Great video guys 😀
Much appreciated
Just WOW! 😯
If only I had the creative talents on Show here😢
Get yourself to Hollywood broski Definitely potential to be the next Spielberg
Nice lamp at 15:26.
Lovely Donegal
Beautiful, but what a waste of resources. At least they could have given the blankets to the Red Cross, to help people in troubles after an earthquake or a tsunami.
Thanks for the video, it's fascinating to watch through a window open onto the past and see how we were then 😊
The Ostan Gweedor. Stayed there on a family holiday in the early 70s, just after its completion.
Very sad to see it like this.
Surreal 💚
Great content and even greater reminder to us all of the sacred power of Mother Nature, through all that concrete, brick, wood and glass, she comes to reclaim.
Tis greener than the Emerald Ireland itself! 😳
Beautiful ferns
Thanks for exploring this place, I live in Dublin and had the privilege to stay in it many years ago at a Christmas do, it was fantastic in it's prime 👌
Enjoyed this video very interesting it's sad and I find it haunting, bet that has seen a few squatters over the years.
Isnt it beautiful how nature reclaims what was once hers .
Spent most of the day watching your videos you have just got yourself a new subscriber I like the way you go international with your videos
Cannot believe you would let a hotel in such a beautiful coastline just sit there and rot away great video guys if I had the money I would certainly snap.it up and restore it better do the lottery this weekend here's hoping.
I've literally texted my aunt the same thing just now. She lives less than a minute away. All my family are from that area.
that fence tells you how welcome you are , and how abandoned it is.
Amazing shots and experience. Do you have any images to share - ferns in the bed for eg?
Decay? or growth? Well done for anonymising the locations on your videos.
I used to spend my summers swimming there in the leisure centre lovely hotel
Wow!!!
beautiful hotel ,such a shame its been allowed to get in this state ,it could be converted into holiday or private apartments they would always be occupied with the gorgeous view .
amazing vid well done . shame its gone the way it has .hope someone has the sense to restore it have a great xmas and new year
I had a fancination in abandoned buildings. Especially, Asylums that are just creepy.
I'm really surprised that a place like this, in such a beautiful spot, would be closed. Quite sad to see...
Great video guys 👏 so sad to see what was once a lovely hotel, left to decay 🥺
I remember it being built in the 1970's, looked out of place back then and hope it gets demolished soon as it's more of a blot on the landscape. I hated when those wind turbines were put up on the hill, but have now got used to them, but can't get used to this eyesore.
It never had any soul as a hotel and hence the reason it never survived.
It lasted almost half a century though.
Bád Eddie is the name of the boat. We used to swing from it's metal ropes in to the sea when the tide was in.
@@ashleyhaslett2528 It's "Bád Eddie" meaning Eddie's boat.
Post-Apocalyptic film-set in places, never seen anything quite like it. I can think of several reasons for the massive water ingress over a comparatively short period of...8 years?
1- Right on the water's edge, hammered by the Irish weather which is, if nothing else, wet and windy at times
2- If there was any lead or copper flashing/gutter linings on the flat roof the lower echelons of the gypsies would have been in like a shot, ripped it up and weighed it in at the local scrap merchants.
