I watched this movie in my biology class. Unfortunately, I was probably the only kid in the classroom that actually paid attention to it. It's a very moving film. Awesome music, too.
One of the most beautiful movie I've ever seen. This final scene is so sad. The music is so deep... Tears are about to roll down my cheeks everytime I watch this...
One of the best science fiction movie I ever saw. Without much of today's CGI and other special effects, this movie touches to the soul and mind while uplifting the human spirit and self-determination.
I watched this in Biology class, like a lot of other people. I can remember all the small gasps and murmuring as Jerome climbed into the incinerator...
I see it the exact opposite. It shows what anyone is capable of despite their disadvantages. It is probably one of the best movies to showcase that the human spirit is powerful. Nothing is impossible.
it's extremely rare for me to cry while watching a show/movie i struggled to hold back my tears when we watched this because i didnt want to bawl my eyes out in class that says something about this movie. it's fucking beautiful.
I've yet to see another film which encompass what true dedication, sacrifice and passion look like outside of Gattaca. When you see Vincent's face the first time he sees the rocket going up as a janitor while Nyman's "The Arrival" plays in the background; until this moment when he's finally going up you feel true joy for Vincent. If you've faced adversity to something you truly, madly, deeply desired then you know what it feels like in this moment of the film. The blood, sweat and tears it took to get there and what it means to see a dream become a reality. There is nothing more surreal. This is the type of hero that we seldom see out of Hollywood but, ironically enough, it's hero most would be inspired by or even identify with. Definitely one of the most underrated films of all time.
Eugene may feel a sense of relief and contentment knowing that he lent his credentials to some willing to do great things, and who will be eternally grateful for the opportunity. He could have all too easily been paired with a well intended underachiever, but instead he's helping make history.
I agree with you about the details. Pressure suits are needed, of course. But this moment in the movie is not literally about a liftoff of a rocket. It's just a symbolical representation of getting where the main character wanted to get in life.
I remember during my high school biology class, my teacher showed us this film. At the time, my appreciation for art was sub-par compared to the other students. At the beginning of the film I wasn't too sure, nor did I care, what I was watching. As the movie progressed, I started paying more attention and got sucked in; this film embedded into me. I finally put time aside to watch it, and really absorb the cinematography, the beauty, the message, and even actors performance. This will go down as one of my top ten favorite films.
I cried hard when i saw this movie first time in Jan 2020, I was rejected for a job in 2007 because I am a HBV carrier, I had to ask my friend to had blood test in stead of me, so I could get a job at that time.
In my opinion, this is the best movie because when u see it, you forget what u are, you are IN the film, actors are talking about You, MANKIND, Thats is the best because it's not a movie, it's more than a piece of art, It helps mankind asking good questions and it help ANY HUMAN to travel in a world that you can understand even if it's not real, it s your world.
I love this movie. I've seen it more than once but every single time - I'd find myself tearing up during this scene. It was just beautifully done. The music, the acting, the voice over (script) awesome
Perfect in every aspect of translating the deepest most inner emotions of the human spirit. The music mergers perfectly with de message.. And the beauty of the language of emotions come to the surface in all its splendor..
GATTACA IS THE MOVIE OF MY WHOLE LIFE, tHANK YOU, It shows you how life is hard and so beautiful, there is no word to explain it, pictures and emotions speak more than words. Sometimes, a man can make a Movie, that is 200 % perfect, that's to muche, that's why you cry,you breath as the actors breath, All my life I ill be marked by this thing.
I 1st watched this movie when i was vary young now that im older i understand the movie better and it really gets at my heart strings. (Love the movie.)
Yeah there was also a Coda at the end which combines with this makes you tear up more. It flashed up some of histories greatest minds and then their genetic illnesses. The subtext is clear: If Gattaca was real they might never have existed.....then it flashes up the Vincent moral: There is no gene for the human spirit.
That's a pretty cool take on it - I saw the suicide as a kind of 'merging' of Vincent & Eugene; from the moment of departure, there is just 1 identity, built from Eugene's genetic passport and imperfections with Vincent's dreams and passion.
Earlier in the film, Vincent refers to Jerome as 'facing the burden of perfection' which also explains the silver medal he wears when hes about to kill himself. In the end, he still couldn't come to terms with being second best. Great movie.
This movie is one of my all-time favorite too but I can't see how there could be a sequel or what could possibly justify one, as far as the story is concerned. Sometimes, things are best left as they are in order to preserve all their beauty.
The Song, is just perfect , only the song could tell you the story, it doesn't need any word, you listen it and you cry, u see it and you cry again and each time u see it, u will cry, impossible to get bored, no way, it's only genius, pure Human Genius in his Pure Form. Perfection of mankind in it's pure form are the words.
Gattaca! the most overlooked of all sci fi films. looks better than Blade Runners retro future, deals with similar issues, and does so so much better, without all the fuss and sci fi visual cliches. Although it wasn't Blade Runners fault that every film that followed looked the same, that's what happened. When I first saw Gattaca I was overjoyed that it broke away from the BR legacy. It's worn so better too, still looks great. lets face it like 2001, it transcends the genre of sci fi and is simply just a great film. And yes I always cry, the ending is genuinely moving a d Hawke is brilluant, as is Law. There's a very subtle homoerotic thing going on between Vincent and Eugene. ...and it has the great Gore Vidal to boot! Along with 2001, my favourite film!
i agree with you- for ever! this is the greatest movie ever! thanks for sharing your words! i feel just the same! i carry this movie in my heart, every second, until one day i can be one with the stars. greetings from germany- jose
It's a known fact that three-piece suits and ties are far better than those bulky pressure suits that that NASA astronauts wear. The highly polished wing-tip shoes are great for zero-G. The moon dust wipes right off. When this movie was made, they had stopped issuing fedora hats because they wouldn't stay on properly during high-G maneuvers, but I think that decision was a mistake. Stylish headgear is what gives space travel such panache.
One of my favorit movies. Not only because of the topics in the movie like "never give up on your dream" or the quite interesting way of seeing god and the fate in ones life. its also about finding out what place you have in this world and what is it what makes you the person you are. No man and no "handicap" can diside who you are, what you are capable of and what is your limit. In a very abstract way it have a lot in common with Fight Club, don't you think? ^,^
EVERY ATOM IN OUR BODIES WAS ONCE PART OF A STAR LOVE THE THOUGHT OF THAT Its very sad to say ive not seen this film came across this because i love M Nymans music
i saw this movie in school and me and ma bff were soo into and amazed by it ...it really is an AMAZING movie and the ending made us cry ...we will never see another movie like this in any of years to come
Tbh I think that was the point in terms of story arc. Since Vincent was leaving (without any indication that we would "be back") there was nothing left for Jerome to do, in which gave him the reason to "leave" as well. Very poetic when you think about it. They're heading to their final journey.
Also means the msg of love, bravery, humanity behind gestures, attitudes... The beauty that hides in every sound, and means so much and comes so much from within... The true religion, the true reason for our existence, create, evolve, feel, the elements, that surrounds us, breathe every fraction of Life... There is a way, a language that hides behind this symbiosis of emotions... I haven't mastered it yet but I feel the... It fills me... It touches me... The reality of life unfortunately makes me not always awake, but when I stop, I turn off the time, suddenly it's there, enveloping me, calling me. And at these times, I understand myself... I understand the meaning of Existence...
After I saw it, I was another man probably 4 ever. No need to see other movies, this one is just what make human life so wonderful or so bad, that's what life is really, no lies, no super power, no bad scenes to remove. Only The TRUE, the Only One. I thank my english teacher to prent me this, thk u th eman from who this story start. It should be a great man.
Watching this film and then watching Inspiration 4 launch it makes me realize that we may be heading the right direction. Thank you Elon Musk for giving us an all civilian launch, for making space a possibility and inspiration for many Vincents out there who are not astronauts but have always dreamed of going to space.
He was in the wheelchair because of a failed suicide attempt, which most probably came about due to unforeseen depression about being second best in a society where perfection is encouraged in all forms ('I wasn't drunk you know, when I stepped in front of that car. I guess I couldn't even do that right'). Part of the irony the film plays on is that even engineered beings aren't 'perfect' and may end up worse off out of a desire to feel so.
I think the suicide attempt could apply to Vincent when e realized he could never achieve his dream through the proper channels, hence how he unexpectedly beat Anton for the first time.
This movie wasn't about spaceships. It isn't "science fiction" in the sense most people associate with the term. The story so happens to have elements of science and fiction but they weren't trying to tell a space drama. If you watched this movie and all you got out of it was a nitpick about the implausibility of going into space without proper gear you missed the whole point of the movie all together. In that case you should stick to things that easier to understand... like Star Wars.
@luislehder for me, its not only the song, but overall, theirs more into it!! its one of my favorite, i cant explain how i feel, its just that everything in this movie inspires me, and makes me stronger. and i agree the music is so damn powerful! this is one of my very very favorite movie of all time. and i really love these soundtrack as well

It could mean a few things. It could be Jerome's way of saying "farewell" since a lock of hair is usually given to someone so that the giver can forever be thought of. The way Vincent looks at Jerome's lock of hair is very telling, since he KNOWS that it's Jerome's way of saying that they will never see each other again. It's such a touching, poignant, truly powerful scene. All the more powerful because there aren't any words. This is such a beautiful scene and an incredibly awesome conclusion to a true work of cinematic art. A masterpiece, IMHO.
what if we had only 100 years to leave this paradise? what are you and I doing now in this life to make it not necessary for us or your descendants to worry about needing to leave?

Sameeeee
Vapa
Same, I also watched in biology class.
Same bruh
One of the most underarted movies ever. Great story, music and concept!
Why underrated? It generally get super good reviews! (which are well deserved)
One of the most beautiful movie I've ever seen. This final scene is so sad. The music is so deep... Tears are about to roll down my cheeks everytime I watch this...
At 2:14, you can see Jerome's silver medal turn to gold. I always loved that fine detail.
Also, the medal is two individuals swiming, just like Vincent and his brother.
Wow guys i fell so dump, i never noticed that or the 2 brother icon in the medal. i even didn't know Spoiler:
That he burned in the oven.
I never saw that!!thank you!!
Mourning Flesh wow, i didn’t notice that. so much detail went to this movie
Oh really ??!! I never saw this amazing detail !! Thanks for sharing this !
I cry no matter how many times I watch this movie
I also couldn't hold my tears...it managed to touch my numb heart.
Absolutely gorgeous, emotional film, acting, writing, directing, cinematography, score, art direction, all of it.
Damn near perfect, isn’t it?
The ending always gets me.
This was an incredibly depressing movie in many ways, and not just the ending.
I see it the exact opposite. It shows what anyone is capable of despite their disadvantages. It is probably one of the best movies to showcase that the human spirit is powerful. Nothing is impossible.
Gorilla Jones yeah that’s actually the same feelings I took from it, great film
Quite the opposite for me. I found it really uplifting.
God I feel like crying every time I see Jerome get into the incinerator
it's extremely rare for me to cry while watching a show/movie
i struggled to hold back my tears when we watched this because i didnt want to bawl my eyes out in class
that says something about this movie. it's fucking beautiful.
Same... watched it in class as well. It was so difficult to contain myself

You described the main character in every Damien Chazelle film.
@RMutt1 So beautifully said! This is definitely an extremely underrated film but maybe that also contributes to its beauty.
I wonder if nieman in whiplash is a nod to nyman’s score and this film.
Mostly contradict everyone in everything they say but i got to say this is the true feeling of the message from Gattaca
Eugene may feel a sense of relief and contentment knowing that he lent his credentials to some willing to do great things, and who will be eternally grateful for the opportunity. He could have all too easily been paired with a well intended underachiever, but instead he's helping make history.
This awesome soundtrack, one of the greatest, wasn't even nominated at the oscars... One of my top 10 soundtrack and movie no doubt.
curious for the other 9

Yes its the science-fiction film itself. Greater than great.
It is one of the all time greats. There will never be another movie which will ever replace this. Simply outstanding, in more then one way.
Cant describe my feelings watching this movie, listening to this music, seeing this faces
I always cry when I watch this scene and the MASTERPIECE of a score from the highly talented Michael Nyman gets me everytime.
I cried hard when i saw this movie first time in Jan 2020, I was rejected for a job in 2007 because I am a HBV carrier, I had to ask my friend to had blood test in stead of me, so I could get a job at that time.
You have a good friend. I don't know you. But cheer for you.
Watched this when I was young and still one of my all time favorites. Every scene is so profound, especially this one.
The hardest moment in the movie...
My favorite..

Great film, great scene, great lines, magical lyrics.... A masterpiece!
The ending makes me so sad, it's really bitter sweet.but I love this movie.
This movie is so profound. So many beautiful relationships explored. Truly a masterpiece.
I love this movie. I've seen it more than once but every single time - I'd find myself tearing up during this scene. It was just beautifully done. The music, the acting, the voice over (script) awesome
One of my favorite films.
Jerom was a very interesting character to say the least, the whole movie was a life changing experience.

i LOVE ethan hawke in this movie
This movie is way too underrated.
Both return to where we all are from, star dust...
this movie shows humans cannot being limited to their dreams
do the impossible

Never, ever discount the human spirit !!
Tears. Iconic.
probably the best scene in the movie, i think.
...and i remembered Jerome saying "i only lend you my body, me your dream"
:'(
Why can't i stop crying?
...meraviglioso...emozionante...profondo...
I was really close to crying when watching this...long live mr. nyman and human spirit:-)
This movie is one of my all-time favorite too but I can't see how there could be a sequel or what could possibly justify one, as far as the story is concerned. Sometimes, things are best left as they are in order to preserve all their beauty.
I'm from the streets and I cried. I can relate to this.

Struggente. Grandi attori.
How can you turn on a furnace from the inside though...
I think i got a piece of onion in my eyes
The moment I realized the ending of this movie mad me cry with tears of joy and sadness.
What instrument is used here?
i love this movie i still watch it over and over. it never gets old. but i still don't get it. why in the hell jorome killed himself? does anyone know why?
yeah I thats the imagery that they were going for.
Masterpierce!
What does the hair that Jerome gave to Vincent symbolize or represent?
It could mean a few things. It could be Jerome's way of saying "farewell" since a lock of hair is usually given to someone so that the giver can forever be thought of. The way Vincent looks at Jerome's lock of hair is very telling, since he KNOWS that it's Jerome's way of saying that they will never see each other again. It's such a touching, poignant, truly powerful scene. All the more powerful because there aren't any words. This is such a beautiful scene and an incredibly awesome conclusion to a true work of cinematic art. A masterpiece, IMHO.
Can we in gattaca now
the launch company is spaceX 15 years from now
Water from my eyes, wtf
Jajajaja. Nohelys, no sabía que también te gustaba esta película.
Why'd Jerome have to die? :(
Not to make the movie look like a pure fairy tale
what if we had only 100 years to leave this paradise? what are you and I doing now in this life to make it not necessary for us or your descendants to worry about needing to leave?
