PO-33 Meets SP-404SX // Lofi without a cause

- Tucked the SP-404 SX away for a while and didn't even realize it. Out of nowhere i went for it and along the way grabbed my favorite travel gear the Pocket Operator KO aka PO-33. Utilizing both these samplers to chop and resample themselves to create new rhythms is so much fun. Its a go to when it comes to destroying samples or getting that lo-fi hip-hop sound.

Apologizing to gear is a trademark we should all be fond of.
you should see how i treat my op-1, i'm like a helicopter parent
Gear apologies and dog hugs. Gotta love the kind hearts.
I find myself always apologizing to my gear for lack of use. Too many options. 🤦🏾♂️👍🏾✌🏾
I can imagine Ricky on a long flight, grooving away on what looks like a calculator to the person sitting next to him.
They must wonder why he has his headphones plugged in, tapping away and head bobbing!
Likely giggling to himself as well - as some of those beats are bizzarre as heck lol 😆
As an 80% software/MIDI dood, it's a little funny that my favorite channel on youtube about production is yours. Always great stuff :)
Stray Medicine yeah. In my head, I’m dawless full time. In reality I own 4 full DAWs and I’m a wizard in 3 of them with full suites of plugs from Waves, NI, IK and AAS. but if I can learn workflow that I can apply to my production, even in software, it’s always worth it. But I do love my hardware setup something special...
Orlando Pergamo I mean, maybe if you’re on FL or something, but using Reason devices definitely has a workflow (esp if you bounce to audio), and even in Logic or PT or whatever, you can resample your work. Ableton makes it simple to record audio from one track to another and then cut that audio up and put it in a drum rack post-processing, etc. Maybe by “workflow” you’re thinking of which physical buttons you press along the way? I’m being a bit more process oriented than that and just like hardware, I’m trying to use my ears as much as I can instead of relying on numbers I see on a screen.
@@ftj4441 You're trolling right? I can't stand software with how short my attention span is but there's a workflow for pretty much every method. Really just comes down to preference.
@@JamieClark what's wrong with fl?
Bar Mor probably nothing - but I don’t see it as having a “workflow” that you can equate to using hardware synths and sequencers and audio on tape - it’s a bit more “excell” in that regard. But I’m sure it’s a fine tool and has its own “workflow” for creating music, just not as cross-compatible with other DAWs or hardware (imo based on trying it and being confused asf even tho I’m super competent with a bunch of other cross-platform tools)
‘’They’re ok’’ - Better than anything I’ve ever made
22:08 tall glass of acid LOL
as always, watching you sharing your passion with such enthousiasm, cleverness and kindness is a genuine pleasur. thanks a lot !
Thanks for sharing Ricky! Huge inspiration to us and always appreciate your craft and steez.
Means a lot to have channels like these. Just a good space to hang in. And lots of I inspiration.
It's fun to watch you work; it's good to see someone more accomplished run into similar troubles with gear. Love to see more videos about how you handle things like getting into a rut with sound design, or even song construction. Thanks for what you do!
this sounds amazing! I always leave these videos feeling super inspired.
Thanks for posting Ricky. Life's been crazy as of late and I haven't touched my SP or PO either. Now I cant wait to hop back in. Thanks for inspiring
Hell yea! Keep it easy brother
Thanks again for the push I needed. A musician friend of mine who I respect a lot told me its all about finding the joy, and that's why I like this chanel.
Thanks for all your videos Ricky...I allways learn something new!!! This stuff and all the compact creations series are so inspiring!! Respect
Great video.... I like watching the workflow. Those POs are sick and worth the money!!!!
Such a fun video dude! Thanks for sharing your tips and techniques!
Thanks for this vid! So nice to see you mess around with those sounds. Very inspirational!
You got a sub. I'm in the market for a 404 and what I love about this vid is how freaking raw it is, mistakes and all. Thanks for this
Was just watching your SP-404 vids AND your PO-33 vids earlier this week. Great timing!
Love your videos man, your beats are always hypnotic.
your constant focus on the po-33 makes for great content
Been waiting for this very video for a while, great as always!
this video has really helped me a lot! Thanks Ricky.
Appreciate the combination of these two. Great video bro
Are you kidding me, those PO33-Beats are Dope af!
This is my new favorite channel. Beautiful!
I really like your channel! Quality and topicals always on point & I like how you don’t waste our time with a fluffy intro!
My gf got me a PO-33 for my birthday two weeks ago without knowing I'd been watching your videos religiously (despite not owning a single piece of your gear). Each of your Pocket Operator videos is like watching someone build a car out of household objects. I have the thing. I have hands and ears and eyes. But I'll be effed if I can make it all work together.
Check out a RUclipsr named Gar Hoover - he makes complete songs on the PO-33 and then does "how I made it" walkthrough videos. You'll learn a lot
This video very much inspired me to start pairing these two and uploading more videos. Thanks!
Ricky I look forward to ur vids every week! Makes my weekend!
hey Ricky i just wanted to let you know that you're a huge inspiration
Thank you for the support! It really means a lot :)
You know, every week, I'm waiting for Saturday, for my RT show.... It's just become part of my week. I'll have a couple of cocktails, and then settle into bed with my phones on. Always a nice way to end the week. Thanks RT.
Ricky you nailed it when you said just mess around with it! too many modern samplers (even though they have a place and time) are about menu diving. Creative mistakes and discovery (love it)
That end result was actually phat as hell, me likey
this entire time i’ve been making loops on the 404 by listening to the entire sample and hoping it has a seamless loop. the reverse method is probably going to save me tons of time, thanks!
Pure gold! Thanks for sharing and inspiring :)
Love your videos! Subscribed! I’m just getting started and your relaxed approach never makes me feel like I can’t learn something
Man that sounds sick. U got an ear for beats Ricky. I just received my mpc one but I like ur set up even more
Always Interesting to watch a new video by you.
“Do I need to go hug a dog right now?” That needs to be on a t-shirt or a sticker 😅
Great video once more, also the studio setup lately is looking pretty cool.
Love those beats I often make wonky stuff like that too, just great to have fun with. That 2nd one though I really enjoyed can't wait to see the rest of this
I was not expecting the beat at the end. Woah lol. very sick. gritty af
Never heard of a PO-33 until today, thanks Mr. Tinez!
Pocketoperators are lil gems 🔥 the po33 is definitely one of my favorites. Great video! 💜
one of the wonderful things with the POs is that you can sequence entire songs. And yeah, I've done it a few times. I think I'm overdue make a recording with it.
hey i always enjoy your videos.. can't wait for more dreadbox typhon details... peace!
I wish you'd live stream just hamming. You're such an inspiration and a cool dude.
I love watching you're videos man 😁👌
Couldn't have been more perfect of timing. I JUST combined these two as well!
I have no idea what your doing but just came to listen, the things you can do is mind boggling. Sounds superb also. 🏴👍
20:19 “I gotta go hug a dog.”
so pretty unrelated to the video contents but i just picked up a circuit after watching your videos a lot for the last few months. excited to see where the hardware route takes me ♥
fricken sick Beats as always, Ricky Oof! 👏👏👏👏🙏
just got a sp & bs2 (in the past year due in part to your equisite, wizardly showcasing. ✨⭐️✊🙏
Big fan of running external drums into the 404 - LOFI and DJ LOOPER FX ALL DAY! Been having a lot of fun running the model cycles into the 404 lately. Love the track and video!
I'm all about that 112bpm life!!! 👊🏼 Helluva way to end it that was hot. When you put that vinyl sound underneath it was over. Salud!
I’ve been looking at the sp 404 for years, this video made me wanna instantly buy one with a po33
Cheers bro! I've just bought a Deluge off a mate off mine so i'm messing around with it! I'm liking what i'm seeing....
Crazy inspiring video as always! Bought an sp because of this vid and this is the best musical purchase I've ever made!
Btw, looks like timestretch "buffer window" is the second knob (length or smth).
Great inspiration to my morning coffe beats👌🏽 👊🏽
these off kilter beats are fuego af bro. The real sadlib out here
The funny thing is, you are having so much fun with these that I have decided to get a K.O! even though i do not actually listen to the music genres that use samples*, so I have no idea what am am i "supposed" to to with these, which is part of the fun
* - except maybe for some _very_ occasional 1990s drum-n-bass and jungle like Prodigy and stuff
Thanks RT for fun and inspiration ! 🐂💨💨💨
Bro diggin the samples homie! Dope!
It’s great to see you mess up sometimes and not just skip over things that are a big part of producing
You have a really nice downtempo style. I like your content. Great work.
OMG 😳‼️ Love this video 🙏🏾‼️
You make screwing up look fun. Makes me rethink my own workflow. I'm going to set up FL with my Electribe and just screw around.
damn man... all your content on the PO-33 sold me. Thanks for the links so you can get some :)
This is a fun little setup
The P.O-33 & SP-404 setup is all i have. I love how its just a random idea for you & everything you make with it is infinitely better than anything i could ever do with it 😅😅😅
not true! with every beat we get better and better. so go make some hot traxx
@@RickyTinez 100% agree, i brought my 404 to work today for the downtime. Try & be better every new day
Making me GAS for both of those, Dammit Ricky!! 🤗😁👊
I love how improvised his videos are
Another fun one!
Ah yes, I love the Pocket Operator stuff you do!
The best intro I've ever seen (listened)
I love that you keep in all the bits that other people might have taken out, like forgetting to press record and all that lol, makes it more human
Seriously! I’m taking notes over here.
Good on ya for the DichStudios.com case on your PO-33. I recommend them all the time. Great protection and vastly improves the ergonomics of the device.
These two are among my favorites to work with together.
The last bit there was siiiiick.
3:15 is why I have my Po33 and Sp 404 :) So many unique ways of making music! I love it lol
My favorite part of Saturday, and maybe even the week -- new video from Enrique! Small request - can you do a video on the Octatrack compressor? I find it to be tough to manage at times. Cheers!
I loved where you said "we're going to pitch that up" add the effect and it's pitched down "OK that works". Happy accident for the win!
Btw your channel is my favorite. It makes me want to buy everything and go broke
Man that last beat is right up my alley! You need an 404OG or a 303 next to the SX to keep that compression going 😁
Awesome vid! There's a thing I've found out about the DJ effect on the sp. When you use the pitch, you can set the length with ctrl 1. When ctrl 1 is fully up, the pitch down will sound like a timestretch. When ctrl 1 is fully down, the sample will jump when pitched down. It seem like ctrl 1 is dividing the sample into smaller parts. I figured this out when I was using the "tape stop" effect followed by a beat repeat and it would leave an open gap. I noticed the open gap isnt there when ctrl 1 is completely open when you do the tape stop.
I love destroying and playing with my software, as I’ve been doing it for years. But I just recently picked up a mpc and it’s a complete different beast. It’s a lot of fun making just about anything and experimenting with.
Amazing!
"do I gotta go hug a dog right now?"
Asking the real questions.
Murky triphop , love it
Reminds me of early DJ Shadow
That repitch also sounds like it bitcrushes the sample. It’s a great sound design feature of the 404. Great for adding grit to hats and snares.
Very nice!
Cool. As usual. Guess I'll be adding to my TE family of products soon after watching this.
That second beat was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
More of this! Dope beat. I want a P.O now
27:30 - Sickadelic. Almost reminds me of Lukid.
Cool stuff!!
Man, this „I promise I’ll try not to get carried away with this“ moment is something every (bedroom)producer can relate to! 😂
I love that po case! Where did you get that?! Great vid dude. Always love your stuff.
Not many synth RUclipsrs got sauce like you!
Absolute mad man
The Bob Ross of Sampling, absolute phenomenal stuff, much love from Germany! Keep up the good work :)
