Suzie-"I've never even heard a guitar do these things?!" said everyone ever hearing an Eddie solo the first time. lol
100% true statement my friend. First time hearing Running with the Devil made me a fan for life.
Imagine hearing this in 1978 for the first time? He’s been copied for over 40 years.
I saw them in ‘93 just because I hadn’t seen a concert before and left a fan and Eddie’s solo is why.
Amazing.
@@warrenyoung4978 1986*
@Antione Carle seems pretty fake my dude
Greatest guitar solo ever played. No one will ever be this good. Period.
A M E N
He's pretty amazing for the second best guitarist to ever live...
I honestly cannot watch this performance by the GOAT without the tears flowing...there will never be another
Same.
What an era to be a young person.
A privilige.
@@svenlima he's talking about being alive when it happened. This is when we grew up and we got to see any first hand genius playing. You obviously don't understand..
Amen
I tear up for many reasons. First, that he has passed. Second, there are millions that will never hear his greatness and passion. Third, because he’s gone on to pleasure those in the heavens!!
This is why Eddie was the greatest guitarist that will ever be. He did things with the guitar that no one had ever done before and no matter how drunk he was during a concert it was exactly like it was on the record when he first recorded it unless he was purposely making changes to extend the performance for the enjoyment of the fans. There is a very good reason that GUITAR WORLD MAGAZINE gave him the title of "Guitar God!" No one will ever play as creatively or as jaw dropping as King Edward did may he never be forgotten. ♥️🌹
Stevie Ray Vaughn.
@@rickmolmen178 lol no
@@rickmolmen178ROFLMAO!!
Greatest Guitarist? Hmmmm. Can he finger pick? NO! Can he play slide? NO! Can he play Jazz? NO! Let's just say he's one of the best. Even the masters have masters. I will say this though, he was the most flashiest, most innovative electric rock guitarist since Jimi Hendrix.
He's finger picking at the begining...He could probably play slide with his eyes closed and go listen to the albums, his rythym has elements of swing, jazz, blues, basically every style of music so go hate on someone else because Ed is God@@bobsebring2819
Nobody ever said "hold my beer" after Eddie played. When he was done, it was over.
SRV!!
"Hold my beer."
"You drank it all."
"Then hold the cup."
@@JohnSmith-mu4to lmao..stop..
Instead of "hold my beer", it was "I need another beer because Eddie is _still_ going."
@@JohnSmith-mu4to not even fuck!ng close you joker
Eddie was actually very humble. I met one of Van Halen's roadies and he said Eddie would sit down with kids and play for them before a concert and basically told them he doesn't know where it comes from. he said he is just channeling something from the universe. Something just flows through him. He didn't take credit for it.
NOBODY ever heard a guitar make those sounds until the world was Blessed with the Genius that was Eddie Van Halen...he forever changed how the instrument is played--RIP EVH...
Jimi? :)
@@stephendavis5530 he was the best but evh imo made sounds nobody had heard not even jimi
dont forget Tom Shultz who created alot of pedal tech.
True.
You're right
Lest we forget he came up with much of his playing in the 70s, when no one played like this. He is the Godfather of shredders.
absolutely. all the guitar gods at the time were like WTF??!! I remember Eddie said Ted Nugent asked if he could play his guitar, like it was a magical guitar or something. nobody could figure it out. They thought eruption was done on a keyboard. hell the guy wrote half of their songs when he was in high school. I played the guitar and practiced Van Halen for like 12 years and I still can't get it right.
Ummm, I would have to mention Jimmy Page and the lead guitarist for deep purple, sorry his name escapes me. So many greats from the 70's and unfortunately, it does seem like a dying art, or is that dead.
@@barbararees604 Page and Blackmore are fantastic guitarists and pioneers of the craft, but they do not qualify as a shredder. Different style of playing.
@@barbararees604 lol page isn't top 20
As crazy good as his skills at shredding were, his biggest strength were the rhythms he wrote for VH songs. (IMO) RIP brother. You will never be forgotten.
You’re right. Solos were amazing but I enjoy listening to his rhythm guitar work. Take a listen to One Way to Rock on Live Without a Net when he and Sammy exchange solos toward the end. His rhythm guitar while Sammy solos is amazing. Same for Little Guitars.
@@theroider I'm the one, women in love, 5150, best of both worlds, every song he ever recorded!! I've always felt he was the best Rhythm player! If the human lifespan wasn't so short, I bet he could riff for a millennia!!
@@shannonmcdonald6959 I heard an interview with he and Alex about the library of music he's written in his vault no one has heard. Alex said and I quote, "there is enough for well over 1,000 albums." The guy was a humble, gifted, musical, genius who simply loved music and didn't care about the fame or fortune, meaning it was not his driving motivation. Throw on top of it an incredible father. Did he have his demons? Who doesn't. Unfortunately his dad gave him alcohol and cigs to calm his nerves at age 12 when gigging with his pop. Little did they know back then. To your point though, I totally agree.
I totally agree
R.I.P EVH
Yes not only were his solos mindblowing, his whole work for Van Halen was like the foundation of modern rock. I think their kickass track "I'm The One" is a great example of that.
Did you know that Eddie and his brother Alex actually started with each other's instruments? Eddie had a drum kit and Alex had a guitar. It was only when they swapped over for fun that they realised their respective talents, and swapped for good. Or so the legend goes.
It wasn't for fun, it was because Alex used to come early from school and went straight to the drum kit. Eddie got fed up with it and one day said to himself "ok, you stole my drums, I'm gonna steal your guitar". The rest, as they say, is history. : )
@@Module79L Good to know! When I was in a band, whenever our singer left the room, I used to swap my guitar for the drum kit, the drummer got on the bass guitar, and the bassist took my guitar. Our vocalist was so self obsessed we could be halfway through a song before he noticed lol. Sometimes I wonder if I wasn't a better drummer than a lead guitarist. Couldn't have been much worse!
@@Module79L It wasn't home early from school...Ed had a paper route, and while he was out doing his paper route, Alex would sneak on the drums. Eventually, Ed came home one day and found Alex on the drums, and Alex was better at playing Wipeout by the Surfaris. So Ed said F it, I'll take the guitar.
@@randomhockeyguy9149 It wasn't Wipeout, it was Surfer Joe. Lol, only joking. I'm enjoying this journey into the fine details.
The story is Eddie had a paper route to pay for the drums while he was out doing the route Alex was playing his drums. Eddie was mad at 1st then realized Alex was good on the drums. So he picked up the guitar
Almost 40 years later and it's still amazing to watch!! I present to you the GOAT!!
Guitarist's are still trying to figure out his intro to "Mean Street" all these years later. R.I.P. Legend!
The Mean Street intro is all one big pattern. The patern itself is not difficult, it's the timing and putting it together thats the problem.
@@ajreynolds806 Like most of Edward's playing. It's not the technical side that gets you, it's the technique of doing it. lol It's in his fingers and everyone else has to earn it.
It's basically a slap bass thing. One time I went to a Billy Sheehan bass clinic where he was showing some slap technique. I asked if he could demonstrate the opening to Mean Street. He replied, "Man, if I had a nickel for every time a guitar player asked me that..." *cue audience laughter* It was at that moment I realised I had just outed myself as a guitar player in a room full of bassists lol. But he did kindly demonstrate it perfectly on bass.
He designed his own guitar to get the sound he wanted. Pure genius. Yes, you said it, he's a prodigy! May he rest in peace!
No body touch him..on his level...he's GOAT.......
RIP Eddie! He is a legend. Saw him in person and its just nuts!
I was able too watch him several times both with David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. There will never be another Eddie Van Halen!!
🎸🙏🎸🙏🎸🙏🎸🙏
Makes me want to take my guitar to the dumb.
Rest in peace, Eddie!
I saw them live for 5150
There's a million shredders....and then their are the greats ....Eddie is one of the greatest....
There is no question about it. Edward Van Halen is the GOAT.
I saw Van Halen with every singer they had and Eddie is the greatest guitarists of all time
How do you guys not know the greatest guitar player of all time? EVH not only a great guitar payer but probably the most influential innovative game changer in rock music. Modern day Mozart.
Showing my age here but I saw them play in SoCal before they ever had a record deal and Eddie, RIP, will forever be the greatest rock and roll guitar player ever!!!!
You will NEVER see anyone play a guitar solo better than that....NEVER.....EVER.
He does the famous solo on Michaels Jackson's " Beat It " :)
I used to think he played the whole song but only found out recently that it was Steve Lukather playing the riff and Eddie playing the solo. Lukather even said Eddie re-arranged the song slightly to better setup for the solo.
👏😱👍🙏😍
Congratulations you have discovered the greatest guitarists of all times
Eddie is the GOAT. Hands down. Period. All guitarist looked up to him.
Eddie was extremely drunk in this video and has publicly stated he has no memory of ever playing this
Genius
back in the day that was a nightly thing, nothing new there. Alex the drummer once said He hardly remembered many of the performances because of being drunk.
@@DISRUPTOR40 You can Google it and hear it from the horses mouth himself if you think I'm full of it.
@@DISRUPTOR40 Dude, I hate to be THAT guy but you are on an Eddie Van Halen reaction video filled with die hard fans who've been there since day 1, been to countless live shows, read every magazine interview, and watched every televised interview. I can confirm that Ed said this from his own mouth. Do your research before you bash true fans in this comment section.
@@DISRUPTOR40 Nope, he's right and we didn't even mentioned the drug use.
The whole "Live Without A Net" concert is freaking awesome !
Niccolo Paganini ( 1782-1840 ) violonist , composer , was called the "devils violonist" for his amazing playing . So EVH is the.... rather i say the angels guitarist.
EVH might be Paganini reincarnate
Oh, btw, the solo are solos off various albums. 316, Eruption, Cathedral, Mean Streets intro, Spanish Fly. With some EVH noodling in between.
Yes, But he never played the same solo the same way every show!
There are moments when the sounds he pulls out of that guitar feel other worldly. I can find no better words to describe it.
He basically turns the guitar into a cello for one portion of the solo. Amazing.
I wore the VHS tape OUT back in the 80's! I damn near destroyed this part of the tape rewinding and pausing trying to figure out how Eddie was playing what he did. He re-wrote the book for guitarists.
Same
The greatest of all time!!
Eddies best guitarist of all time
Saw vh 33 times and was never disappointed eddie is definitely the GOAT!
My favorite part was when Eddie & his guitar. Had whales in some ocean. Ask each other, ‘what in the heck is that talking’
I hope somewhere a young child. Who’s learning music of his/her choice. Discovers what electricity and said instrument of choice. Can do with imagination & dedication.
Back in the late 70’s as a Jr high kid. Hearing this on ‘radio’. Blew our Friggen minds. Seeing it live (not same solo, but great) in 1982. Was a privilege, thank you Eddie & rest of group. RIP 😎
Miss that smile so much!! Lucky me, I seen them twice, 82' and 84' He was BEYOND his time with sounds that were just Amazing!! Rock n Roll lost a lot of musicians, but EVH was Absolutely missed by millions!! He invented so much with tyhe guitar, things youve never heard! And if you notice he clises his eyes through much of it and tgat contagious smile will be missed 💯 forever!!
RIP Eddie😇❤️🔥🎸
Eddie Van Halen he will always be remembered as the Johann Sebastian Back of the electric guitar. Just like back then, he lifts us up to heaven with his musical majesty, and now he does it on the great heavenly stage.
RIP: 1955 - 2020 See you forever master😔🤘
"He looks like he's just fooling around and yet he's hitting on the perfect spots." That really sums up Eddie. It was so effortless to the guy it was just goofing around and he loved it.
endless hours of playing. Eddie said he would be playing the guitar and Alec would go out and party all night. When Alex got home Eddie was still playing. He would actually take his guitar into the bathroom with him.
I was just thinking this is a total "hold my beer" moment right before you said it.😆
EVH SAVED MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!
Eddie always smiled for the love of of his Music!! RIP EDDIE.
That's what I always loved about Eddie too. Besides his incredible playing, he always looked like he was having fun.
If there was a Mt Rushmore for Guitar players ..He'd be right in the middle.
along with hendrix, srv, and even dimebag 💯
The man changed rock guitar forever.
a couple drinks? guaranteed eddie was completely hammered here. most people probably couldnt walk being that drunk.
how does one watch this & not weep for the talent tht crossed from our world.
Note this, practically every rock or metal guitar player uses many things Eddie invented, widely recognized to be one (if not the) most influential and innovative players ever.
Fact!
One of the 2 best live concert films: this, Van Halen Live Without A Net, and Metallica Live Binge & Purge Seattle '89.
Well.....Priest Live '86 is a clear runner-up.
I think your forgetting Led Zeppelin the song reminds the same 1973.
I love Susie’s reaction. The jaw drop was priceless.
He is the G.O.A.T!
EDDIE VAN HALEN/GUITAR GOD! Suzie , LOVE the dark hair ❤️
The G.O.A.T and watching this brings a smile to my face and then tears cause he is gone to soon. It's amazing to see your reactions as well.
The legato harmonic palm slide still gives me goosebumps to this day. It’s so easy to do, but in the hands of Eddie it always just sounds so much better
Do you happen to know who did that first? I always thought is was wicked sounding and he was the first I ever heard do it.
Mojo Dojo wouldn’t be shocked if it was an EVH original since it requires not only the technique, but high gain amplification to make the harmonics really pop. Nothing comes to mind otherwise
I'm so glad "kids" at your age enjoy this music like i did ;)
Yes Eddie van halen is a true legend in a time of new thinking he brought a sound a mind set that define an era most of the wicked guitar sounds and techniques done today leads back to him and his influence on all the young guitar player wannabes out there where stunned by what he did he a true legend still to this day showing a lil lol
One of my favorite things... watching reactions to this video... Every single person sits there with their head tilted in disbelief... trying to figure it out lol. Great reaction. Thank you. 😊
He was the Master of the hammer-on technique.
I love watching peoples reactions to this solo, seeing the jaws drop and the look on peoples faces of "no f*** way!! what!?!? how??" lol
he made love to his guitar and thankfully shared it with us. TY Eddie!
The face of the two guys... so fun. RIP Eddie.
So glad you finally watched this thank you
Fun fact: Floor jansen and Eddie Van Halen are both Dutch
Ed was half Indonesian
@@elephantsnod 1/4 to be exact. His mother was 1/2.

"Are those lighters"? lol... No one had cellphones back then.
Lighters and spray cans of anything flammable for a big effect was all we had back then.
Yep! I've even seen flaming rolls of toilet paper flying through the air. Ahh.. the good old days. Lol. :-)
@@GunChronicles Ain't that the truth man! I'd give anything to go back.
Saw him 8 times in concert, met him once with a back stage pass, shook his hand and spoke with him for 5 mins as he autographed my Ibanez RT650. Had front row seats with my 65yr old dad who also seen VH 14 times since 1978. I bought the 5 star VIP pack in 07 during the Roth reunion tour just so my dad could meet his idol ... David Lee Roth. It was a dream come true and a night I will hold dear to my heart til the day I leave this earth. Thank you so much for reacting to this fine moment in rock history and paying respects to a man who changed the world as we know it.
Wow...I feel ya brother.
Take the time and watch the whole concert, and then realize that he didn’t stop playing for about two hours. Except for the drum and bass solo, of course. Here’s my number one.
FOCUS- HOCUS POCUS LIVE '73 Jan Ackerman, one of the best guitar players from that time..
Going through so many creators who have watched this is fun. Likes for all too. Eddie was amazing and in a class all by himself. R.I.P.. brother.
Just think WVH has this VERY guitar that he played during this concert. Absolutely priceless.
saw him live a few times from the guardrail and one thing that always got me that not many people mention was unlike most guitarists even while playing crazy hard stuff he only looked at the strings once and a while he would be watching the crowd and the hot women, at where he was walking, or where his drink was and it just made it look like it was so easy for him. also he never lost that smile from his face like he was having a better time playing that night than we did watching him. one of the greatest players of all time he will never be replaced. RIP Eddie
I see everything. It's my gift. I keep forgetting to point out his Sense of Humor. PAY ATTENTION. Right after he jumped off the stage and started eruption, watch what he does. LOL., He takes a deep breath. Just watch. Hard to explain. LOVE IT. 7:37. He was my High School crush. Glad I went in 2015 to see him one more time. We, from this generation, loved Eddie. He was one of us.
I got to see them in concert during this tour (1986) and in 1988 with my mom and our minds was completely blown seeing him perform live. It was an experience that I will never ever forget.
Eddie and Jimi....the best of all time.
Another Dutch legend!
Most of this created in the 70's and still untouchable in 2021.
I was at this show, New Haven Connecticut, they on the radio that day it was going to be recorded, I bought my ticket weeks in advance , I was in the 2nd seat in front of Eddie, between him and Randy Rhodes, my ex went to high school with Randy Rhodes my 2 favourite guitarist
New Halen!
I saw the previous tour before this video. It was the 1984 tour,it was their last tour with David Lee Roth and I was 16. I am blessed to have witnessed him perform his alchemy live. Imagine hearing what he's doing but at arena level volume! There's no way to describe it,really. He was just pure magic. But what made Eddie so special was when you watch him play he's always smiling. He made playing guitar look fun, like any great rock guitarist should. I can for sure tell you this; A million years will pass and in that time there will NEVER be another like him. I guess God wanted to start a band and got the best guitar player he could find.
Great job you to really a fabulous job And Eddie Van Halen don't get me started on him can listen to VH every day day and night and it never get old never will get old anyway great job again to you both and Suzie you looked absolutely amazing girlfriend wow 😳 Super Sweet And Fine
Watching these two observing the GOAT of guitar skills just leads me to one term for them....goobers; they have literally no idea what they witnessed.
RIP Eddie!! Your Art WILL LIVE ON FOREVER!!!!!
And folks that's how its done!!!!!
ROCK IN PEACE EDDIE VAN HALEN........

Seeing Eddie play live was incredible. Great show! Lol... how many fingers were burnt holding our lighters up.
I was a huge EVH fan in high school back in 1980 and spent years trying to play the stuff he did when he was only like 20. I still can't play it right. the guy was a total freak. :) when I saw them in concert, couldn't believe how he played everything like it was nothing. he was jumping around and almost like he wasn't even trying
For those Eddie Van Halen people the Legend is living on through his son Wolfgang, check Mammoth WVH has album coming out in June, Don't Back Down is out now kid is amazing ✔️😘😎🎸🎯
It's great he's doing his own thing and not trying to follow in his dad's shadow! I have yet to listen to all Wolfies music!
The most influential Dutch guitarist that ever was!!!!
Good reaction. The man couldn't read music. A God given gift. He's playing somewhere better now
I'm an 80's graduate! It was a special time in historyfor music!
Wtf 2020 we lost Eddie. One of the most iconic and influential guitar hero of the century . Rest in rock Legend 🎸🎶💔
...and each one of those solo sections connects the VH fan to a different song or album...it's a hit parade of VH history...just beyond belief
LET THERE BE ROCK, LIVE AT THE RIVER PLATE!!!
Eddie was fucking awesome!! He designed his own guitars for that sound!!❤️❤️❤️❤️🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
best guitarplayers from the netherlands
Saw Van Halen in Roanoke about 3 months before this show in 86. Magical.
Eddie always had his guitar with him he was not comfortable unless his guitar was with him whether he was doing an interview on a radio show or wherever if he didn't have his guitar in his hand it was almost like he was naked it was just part of him, so all those crazy sounds and everything he does he invented all that stuff which guitarist nowadays take for granted because it comes in a simple effects box he did that all with
delays Pedals, Distortion, and twisting his volume knobs, his hammer on technique, finger tapping tone harmonics using his whammy bar to create that diving effect, he did so much for rock guitar, I was fortunate to watch it from the very beginning and remember it, and as a kid I was just so blown away by him, love to see you guys get into this music, you guys really appreciate good rock and roll or just good music in general, as long as it kicks its good!
Vai ,Eddie, and Randy Rhoads has to be my dream show. Zakk and Dime as special guests.
It's also amazing knowing that the guitar he's playing he built out of parts!!
He was a genius. RIP brother! The song "Eruption" is nearly a guitar-solo.
He’s one of the best! But do Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Flood live. Your jaw will hit the floor. He plays behind his back and sings...
I like your reaction videos. Even better when it's Eddie Van Halen you are reacting to. We all honor him by watching this.
