When a large hammerhead or tiger is near, smaller sharks will often bolt, and you have done nothing to scare them away. You probably will not see the large shark. If you see stingrays or turtles that are too afraid to even run away from you, then you know they have seen something that frightens them more than you do. This will help you be on guard and to perhaps leave an area where you know you are being stalked. Just my advice to all divers out there. 20 years spearfishing and never been bitten. Talk about a real life horror movie can you imagine being in his place? We really can't. That's no way to die, and having to die alone, so as not to put your friends in immediate danger. The young woman too, her faint little yelp as she was taken...just too much.
@Pat Luxor Kinda funny but it didnt make sense cause theyre in the water and cant stand. Plus the joke doesnt pertain to the situation itself. The guy isnt in a negotiation or debate, he sacrificed himself to save his friends so how doesnt he have a leg to stand on?
When I was a child and still believed sharks like to eat people this used to be a recurring dream for me taking a bath washing my hair then a shark breaks my bath from below and eats me.
Wow that unprovoked tripple attack was crazzyyy. Imagine yourself being in such a situation to begin with but seeing 2 of your crew being eaten after you got bit is Just wow insane.....
Love your Stories! I used to work on Boats in the Gulf of Mexico (100 Miles offshore) I used to dive off of the top of the boat, 1 day they told me to come to the back of the Boat, overnight they had caught a 7 foot Shark, another Shark (The Captain thought it was a huge Bull or Tiger Shark) had ripped the entire midsection out of this 7 foot Shark (Probably 3 to 4 feet) That was the last of my diving off of the Boat

I am going to have nightmares tonight..16 ft Tiger consuming those 2 people..Brrrrrr! (Shivers) I saw how slowly they follow people, and my blood just froze! Great show Hal ,great show !
Mate I've been spearfishing since I was 12 years old surfing since I could walk. I have had interactions with all sorts of sharks thankfully all of them peaceful, a few hairy situations but all from personal error. Hal just wanted to say mate that alot of what say is not only logical but accurate. You are able to assess these incidents and see them for what they are. Sharks arent out to get us but we do tend to look at them through rose tinted glasses, at the end of the day they are wild animals and ofcourse they need to feed and they attack when threatened. I feel like alot of your hypotheses for these incidents are absolutely spot on. Love watching your content cheers for the hours you've kept me entertained!

Great show Hal, There is something really eerie about those super sharks,(the really huge ones) that slowly size up and decide where they are going to bite the person. Same way we size up a triple meat hamburger before we take a bite. Really gruesome.
I think I'll have nightmares about that triple attack. I can't fathom how that survivor dealt with it. Horrific by every scale imaginable. How he had the fortitude to keep going after witnessing two attacks seems nearly super human.
My wife and I were just watching it, shut it off with a 1/2 hour to go, will finish it tomorrow night. And then I find a new SHARKS HAPPEN episode, excellent. Serendipitous. The Reef is a pretty damn scary movie, its under my skin.
Puerto Rico…back the 60’s…guy swimming off a beach in San Juan shot at a Mako shark with a speargun. Pissed off the Mako, the guy somehow manages to evade the sharks attack, gets up on the beach and the Mako beached itself trying to get him. The report should be in one of your books.
If that's true, then they know what a spear gun will do to them. The fact that it tried to exact revenge...does that indicate a higher level of intelligence than we think they have???
@@kleague41 Uh…no…it’s an animal…I have seen barracuda attack bait floats out of …anger… I guess. They just associate the float to the hook they just threw. It’s best just to assume that Makos dont take any crap, and leave it there…
'The reef' underwater footage of the huge Great white combined with the murky music was heart stopping! It wasn't a perfect movie, but it had its moments!!
I like how you do not sensationalize every story. You just give facts, and I appreciate no gruesome pictures. I am fascinated with sharks, but can not handle some of the gory details in pics. Sharks are amazing and should be protected, but they scare the crap out of me.
There are very little gruesome pics of said attacks. Even so, they wouldn’t be allowed on RUclips. As far as I know, the only video of a fatal shark attack comes from just the other day in Sydney.
@@ananonymoushen4339 oh you'd be surprised. There are some videos of the aftermath of motorcycle accidents on here that you would really not expect to find on youtube. Years ago we were about to go in the water at Monastery beach south of Carmel when two divers came out with a look of fear on their faces. When we asked what was wrong they said they were out spearfishing and when coming in a huge great white was following them. They let it have their stringer of fish and hoped it was happy. It’s exactly how I’d imagine someone’d react to knowing something unknown is bumping up against them. (And How awesome izzit that there is and is going to be an influx of viewers scoping it out on AmPrime? 😄)
Hi Hal, I understand where you are coming from. I have been on multiple dives with tiger, bull, lemon, reef and hammerhead sharks in the Bahamas. Honestly speaking, they didn’t seem to care about humans at all underwater. We took 3-4 dives everyday, each dive lasts about an hr. The tigers were very very calm and relaxed and came up right next to me.
Totally different situations. Those sharks you were around have been accustomed to seeing people dive among them. The Bahamas is among the most popular places where a person can dive with sharks and watch them being fed _fish._ These three unfortunate folks were capsized, lost their boat and had to swim on the surface back to shore in Australian waters. Have you ever fished by trolling?
@@watchmanschannelofdespair both can be true, one does not negate the other. And sharks are already accustomed to humans in beach waters, surfers encounter them the most often, and sometimes without even noticing them the entire time. Of course in this case, unfortunately all the odds were stacked against them.
I grew up on New Smyrna beach. The so called shark attack capital of United States. I now live in between Daytona and New Smyrna. I’m 50 years old and have never been scared of the water. I’m always aware of what’s going on such as bait fish jumping, birds going crazy and have even seen a whole lotta small rays jumping out of the water. That means get out. I’ve surfed, at Bethune my whole childhood and have seen my share of fins. Still not scared. I respect the ocean and everything in it. Thanks Hal for these amazing videos! 🤙
Well, my friend, all I can say is that you are a different beastie than I be. I was fearfully awaiting a shark to grab me in Lake Michigan in 1988...haven't been back since. 🏊🦈🥺
@@spongemonkeysooz lol I’m sorry you had that experience that! I was raised on and in the water. My dad taught us about all the dangers of beach life and is rather wade out in the ocean then ever jump in a river or lake in Florida. To me alligators are way scarier than any sharks. 😂
@@keylimekelly2354 You're sweet, but I was just saying what a chicken 🐔 I am. G'day Hal, I live about 20-25 minutes from Snapper Point. We used to dive and spearfish all along the coast, except the drop off at Aldinga, that's a no go. I would've thought the depth chargers would've destroyed some of the sharks sensors and would make it flip out of the water in spasms and easily bite someone, in that last case. Imagine swimming past an exploding depth charger with all those sensors. Love the channel too.
Hey hal, you every realize looking through the older files on how many people get taken and eaten immediately after falling off a boat? That was What surprised me the most. Almost like they were just waiting for that to happen.
LOTS. Check out the South African shark attack files, lots of guys falling off boats and getting chowed immediately, especially in harbours. There was a guy a jumped into a harbour here last month, he surfaced and then disappeared. IIRC he still hasn't been found... There were legends of MASSIVE GW's resident just outside Durban harbour, especially in the old days when the Whaling station was still operational. Plenty guys got taken in that harbour never to be seen again. Some MASSIVE Zambezi/Bull Sharks and Tigers off there as well.
@@SharksHappen Yeah. I've seen a car number plate among other things come out of a Tiger Shark's stomach... they eat ANYTHING. Bull Sharks not so much, although they are opportunistic.
I was bitten by a bull shark it took a chunk off my upper arm and a bit of my chest. They grafted the area with thigh skin. I was 12 years old I’ve never been ashamed of my scar. My brother was swinging me around in 4 feet of water it grabbed me just as he swung me away from it. We didn’t see it coming it was just good timing or it may have take my arm and shoulder. This was in South Africa in the 70s It was a bite and tear not deep like I said because I was in motion of being swung away from it. We were able to get out of the water right away. It stung a lot that I remember.
Been working on getting sober and this show really helps me get out of a bad headspace. I'm so interested listening to Hal and that keeps my mind off of bad things, especially at night before going to sleep. The show is very engaging. Please keep 'em coming, Hal Thanks
I watched "The Reef" ... how horrifying ! another movie was "Open Water" when I was a kid, at Zuma Beach, Cali. I'd swim beyond the breakers and float, tread water, it was like paradise.....NEVER will I go back into the ocean !!
@@soookimbo6571, I was stalked by a cougar once in the Pacific Northwest... it's a really creepy feeling knowing something wants you for lunch! Primal fear.
I remember when the New Venture tragedy happened. I cant imagine how terrifying it would have been for them :( I was in high school at the time. We live on the Nth Qld coast just south of Townsville and hear so many stories from people who go fishing at the reef how big the sharks are...and how plentiful.
In late October, 1998, my son, Son-in-law (active duty US Coast Guard) & I were pulling our boat up the ramp at the Sandy Hook Coast Guard Station (NJ). I was in the stern on the port side. I thought I had backed into a submerged piling. I was bumped hard by a 6-7 foot bull shark between my shoulders. I stared right into its eyes as I darted from the water (4, maybe 5 meters to the sand). The shark swam almost to the beach after me. We threw small peebles& rocks at it and it swam off. The largest great white I have ever seen was from the Breezy Point Jetty, Queens, NYC. I saw the fin and realized it was moving against the current. It swam right under the rock I was standing on and I estimate it at about 5 meters long. I tried to hook it (snag it). It would have stripped my reel. On another day, a scuba diver was spearing blackfish (tautog). He had a nice bag of them. He went back down and came flying out of the water. His bag had been bitten in half by what he identified as a tiger shark. So much for NYC waters not having sharks. There's a great white breeding ground right off Rockaway, Queens, NYC. GWS'S (JUVENILES 5-7 ft) often caught off rockaway.
There's an interview with the tiger shark victim while in hospital, in the documentary Tiger Shark, Thug of the Sea here on RUclips. He seems to still be in shock during the interview, but it's right afterwards so probably the most accurate version of events.
Hal, I consider your diagnoses on these shark attacks to be pretty accurate. Most researchers label shark attacks as a mistaken identity. However, you are far more accurate listing them as predation. Thanks
It's there ocean when do people realize just leave the poor animals alone they beautiful majestic creatures and we need to respect them humans are the worsed predators

Another one from my home town of Aldinga , although I haven't heard of this one before , I stopped swimming at the beach after the young bloke got taken up at west beach I went snorkeling with two other mates the day after the west beach incidence , freaked myself right out thinking the worst , that was the last time I set foot in the sea.

Some people get hung up on going too hard one way or another. Let's be real these are real dangerous predators that you should take seriously and they have hunted humans but there's also cases where they haven't.
I just appreciate your candor and honesty. It’s sickening how we are being fed lies, by people with an agenda, about these sharks that are killing people. “No matter how paranoid or conspiracy minded you are, what the government is actually doing is worse than you imagine.” William Blum
They’re just doing what big predators do, you can’t blame them. And people do sometimes lie about it because they want tourists to keep going to these beaches. Fact remains that most sharks won’t attack you, but to say the odd rogue doesn’t happen now and then would be a lie. And re the government, I dunno, I can imagine quite a bit.
~ HI Hal ~ Beyond expectations for others to risk their lives for people getting attacked, and yet, it happens over and over again. God bless each one and RIP to the victims. LOVE your passion for sharks and enlightening us so well. Take care.
It's surprising that the sharks almost never go after the rescuers. I wonder if they see them as a competitor trying to take their food and decide that it's not worth fighting over. Anyone have any ideas about this ?
There's an episode of I Shouldn't Be Alive about this guy whos boat sank. He was lost at sea for like 3 months in this little life raft that had like a tent over the top to protect him from the sun. Maybe around day 50 he was sleeping and all the sudden BAM he said his little raft just gets flung out of the water and through the air. So he lands and scurries over to the opening. Keep in mind this little raft sits right on the water there is no distance between him and the ocean. He sticks his head out the opening and he says the biggest Great White he's ever seen just comes cruising right in front of him. And the shark has tilted its body so half of it is out of the water and he says he's staring right into this sharks huge black eye and the shark is just staring right back at him. So then the shark swims off maybe 25 meters right on the surface turns and comes at him. All he has is this laughably small spear gun. So he grabs the "spear" which I'll call a fork and gets ready for this massive Great White. So the Great White comes at him and he's poking it with this fork trying to keep it from biting the raft and this goes on for some time. I don't recall all the details but it's about the most terrifying experience I can imagine. You should check that episode out.
I'm thinking of a different episode actually where a ship went down and ther were 5 people on it and they were stranded at sea for 10 days but 2 of them went crazy from thirst and started drinking the salt water which then made them jump in the sea where they were both taken by sharks, then one girl died in the raft a few days later and they pushed her over the boat and the sharks took her body too. Sharks are no joke. They eat meat and that's what we are ! Why wouldn't they! A lion prefers a juicy gazelle but we all know they would eat us , why are people so shocked when a shark eats a person! Especially a 15ft fish with a huge mouth !

I just don’t understand why people don’t have a dive knife with them when they enter saltwater. I mean a lot of these people who are taken aren’t diving but I carry 3 with me when I’m diving/swimming in fresh water! Not because I’m afraid of sharks I’m afraid of getting tangled up in fishing line or getting a hook in me far from the surface. I remember working on a crab for nearly an hour on Avalon pier in Cape Hatteras. Big rascal with big pinchers! Not sure what type of crab he was but he reminded me of a snow crab. Anyway my wife’s fishing line and another guys line got caught up in the tangled mess he was in and it was stuck to the bottom. We both pulled together and got the crab and tangled mess onto the pier. I started working to get the line off of him and he could barely move one claw. He never offered any resistance at all and never once tried pinching me. He just sat there waiting for me to finish removing the line and some of the line was TIGHTLY wrapped. Anyway when I was through I just sat him on the edge of the pier, told him he was free now and I swear it looked like he took his right arm and gave me a salute then scampered off the edge of the pier back into the water. That was the only movement he made the whole time I worked on him. But I saw right then and on other occasions the need for a dive knife or two while I was in the water. Sorry for rambling on but good to see another video from you! As long as you keep posting them we will gladly keep watching them!
Yes, doesnt have to be a large knife, have had a story where the one kid went back to help his buddy hitting the white with his knife til it was knocked from his hand, but most times they will retreat when stuck

I still can't wrap my head around locals or tourists, surfing or bathing at second Beach in Port st. John's. Many people assume that it's the Western Cape, around Gansbaii, Hout Bay, or false Bay where the most attacks happen. but by far, Second beach in the Western Cape is the capital for great white attacks. Pretty sure it also has the highest attack to death ratio. It's literally infested with massive white sharks, and still a massively popular beach, surrounded by tons of restaurants and gift shops. With lots of swimming, surfing, paddle boating and snorkeling and diving excursions. The economy depends on the locals officials, as well as the mayor downplaying the shark attacks a. Anyone who has seen at least a few episodes of sharks happen has surely heard Hal mention Port St John's Second Beach attacks before today, often ending quite gruesomely and with no body to be found.
ACtually its the aftermarth I fear more than the attack itself. The recvoery period must be a humbling process. I have spend about 12 months recovery from an accident I had in 2003 - the moods I went through in the process were many and varied.
I remember reading the story of what happened, absolutely terrifying. Linda was in the life ring and the shark was swimming beside her. Then suddenly turned and grabbed her.
that triple Tiger attack was told by the survivor to a news reporter on film and aired on Australian tv - i remember seeing it as 10yr old - i can't remember which network but the interview footage definitely exists and was a big news story in Aussie back when
Love your site Hal, I just wanted to share something here. I recently watched a video on "the Dodo"...I know...but... it had a segment on a shark researcher showing him petting a large tiger shark on the head. He had removed a hook from its mouth years ago and worked with it for years. The comments were unbelievable. "oh! look how its eyes roll back when he pets it! Its so cute!!! another said "all animals are like dogs if you just show them some love and affection." Another said "they don't like the taste of humans, they're afraid of us because we could hurt them" . The level of naivete' was astonishing. The name of the site is quite telling!. I referred them to your site. Keep up the good work.
I saw the same vid. Thought it was just clickbait, but couldn't believe that dude rubbing that HUGE tiger sharks nose. He only does it with that one though, he doesn't go through the ocean like he's at the RSPCA. Probably the only good clip that's ever been on the dodo.
These stories are horrific. I have swam in Florida I have swam in the Mediterranean and I have swam off the coast of Costa Rica on the Pacific side. Not to mention surfing in Santa Monica California. I was a boy and we had a summer home off lake Michigan opposite the Chicago side, I would always wonder mostly at dusk as the sun would go down what could be swimming under all those miles and miles of water. Mind you it's fresh water not even brackish water but it does connect through the St Lawrence seaway and the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. I'm not sure if I believe that a bull shark was found in Southern Illinois or spotted; however I still could imagine that there was some giant beasts down there waiting for me. Truly what nightmares are made of.
You should check out the accounts on the shark attacks reported by Yannis Yerakis in his book about his years as a sponge harvester in early 1900 in Greece. Quite daunting. The book has been published in Greece and France, don't know if you can get it in English. Or I could send you the pages
Great show as always Hal. Really enjoy your videos and commentary. Keep them coming! I have a great respect for sharks and don't like to see them being harmed / killed as they are an essential part of our marine ecosystem. However, I don't want to be shark bait! I am definitely more afraid of them than they are of me. 😬 "The Jersey Beach Attacks of 1916" is worth a watch.
I agree. We forget that once in the ocean, we’re guests, but we’re voluntarily entering an active food chain. Enjoy and appreciate it, but don’t touch shit, don’t interfere with things, and if harmed in doing so, it was a choice. I personally don’t care for the tourism industry that involves a disruptive interaction with aquatic wildlife. Mother Nature has her way of balance.
A shark jumped straight on to beach and bit a guy. In response people on the beach beat the shark to death with sticks. Omg bro your killing me with these stories. I feel Hal could be the first shark attack comedian his material is gold.

@@outlawzzrdr Yep!! The whole thing was staged. but for all that it was a rattling good story...

The story that "The Reef" was based on is a freaking nightmare. The movie was well made. Very scary.
I imagine it paled in comparison to the real situation...I'm a land lover for a reason.
Years ago we were about to go in the water at Monastery beach south of Carmel when two divers came out with a look of fear on their faces. When we asked what was wrong they said they were out spearfishing and when coming in a huge great white was following them. They let it have their stringer of fish and hoped it was happy. Needless to say we didn’t dive that area that day

The Tiger had eaten lunch earlier that day!

What do you think people are saying about sharks that are lies? In general you should be at least reading the research and make up your mind?
They’re just doing what big predators do, you can’t blame them. And people do sometimes lie about it because they want tourists to keep going to these beaches. Fact remains that most sharks won’t attack you, but to say the odd rogue doesn’t happen now and then would be a lie. And re the government, I dunno, I can imagine quite a bit.

I will check that out. Crazy story for sure
I've seen that and wondered why it wasnt famous. I'm sure the shark or sharks took 3 people
I'm thinking of a different episode actually where a ship went down and ther were 5 people on it and they were stranded at sea for 10 days but 2 of them went crazy from thirst and started drinking the salt water which then made them jump in the sea where they were both taken by sharks, then one girl died in the raft a few days later and they pushed her over the boat and the sharks took her body too. Sharks are no joke. They eat meat and that's what we are ! Why wouldn't they! A lion prefers a juicy gazelle but we all know they would eat us , why are people so shocked when a shark eats a person! Especially a 15ft fish with a huge mouth !
That hilarious. University of Florida takes over the Navy Shark Files and officially becomes The Useless Shark Attack Files

I'm not going in the water again without one. A big sharp one .

Petting sharks not for me. People do it tho.
@@SharksHappen I wonder how many draw back a nub.😆
I saw the same vid. Thought it was just clickbait, but couldn't believe that dude rubbing that HUGE tiger sharks nose. He only does it with that one though, he doesn't go through the ocean like he's at the RSPCA. Probably the only good clip that's ever been on the dodo.
Hal! Our shark Pal! 🤙
Solidarity! It's still playing from last night! :) It kept right on rolling overnight
Something tells me, there's to many people out that don't believe that, you should be more afraid of sharks, than they are of you. 😳😊😂
This series Hal, has me remembering to respect the ocean and all that is in it. Thank you for doing such great work !!
Brilliant as always Hal
Interesting. I;d like to check that out.
"The Jersey Beach Attacks of 1916" is worth a watch.
Amen!
Gruesome stuff. I was always skeptical every time it's dismissed as mistaken identity.
Yes! Thank you, Hal for the video.
Tigers are so scary looking. They are the black mambas of the shark world.
Another great show!! Thank you!!
I am still laughing…… I BET IT WAS HIS COLORFUL ROCK OMG TOO FUNNY!!!!
Listening to these stories confirms my decision to stay out of the ocean. If you want to swim go to a pool but why mingle with monsters?
When that guy pointed his spear gun at the shark, the shark took evasive action and went to plan b.
Hey Hal, Just found your channel and had to subscribe after watching this. "The Reef" is my favorite Shark movie!!
☺
A shark jumped straight on to beach and bit a guy. In response people on the beach beat the shark to death with sticks. Omg bro your killing me with these stories. I feel Hal could be the first shark attack comedian his material is gold.
He was harpoonin sting rays for tiger shark bait in shallow water, caught a 16 footer, bronze whalers & a 21foot great white,, those were the days, where is this footage? Best fishing show ever,, I must see this again before I die please
Sharks Happen 🦈 - can you do a video about the legend of the great white called Submarine?
Thank you very much!
that was staged i believe
@@outlawzzrdr Yep!! The whole thing was staged. but for all that it was a rattling good story... The only thing that disappointed me a little was the bit of nonsense of how a couple of packets of milk powder in the water could blind a shark of that reported size and speed... I watched it with a friend who believed it was true, so I told her to go and google it.
@@lynnd1874 yeah and the photo of the dead whale was easily a photoshopped
I’d be terrified for every nanosecond being the last of a group left after *any* shark has picked off my buddies. That in itself is enough to keep me out of some of the most beautiful waters in the world. Well that, and the cost.
Another great one Hal 🇬🇧❤️🇺🇸👍
