The frame on a zero turn breaking on a hill could easily fuck up one of my coworkers and even a break on flat ground that they didn't notice until end of day had me pulling my own Miller MIG in over the HF bargain basement welder we have at the shop. I ran my shielding gas dry on that just to avoid a disaster as they mow steep grades with no room for error.

    The flux on outside of rod needs to be hot to exclude oxygen from weld. Pulsing an arc/stick welder will lead to a dirty weld. Please remember a tack weld is just to hold the items together before the proper weld process. Mig and tig use pre and post flow for the gas to eliminate oxygen stick or arc welding does not so it is a bit more dirty if you put lots of tacks together. Please remember there is a skill to knowing when your weld is a good flow with mig as its called crisp like bacon frying. Not like a fat old steak. Listen.......

So I feel like everyone saying this is wrong should really help me understand how I can actually properly weld without tacking on the thinnest of metal using stick. I’d appreciate that. I can almost guarantee you that all the welders saying turn the amperage down and use a thinner rod stick weld thick metal exclusively for a living and have never stick welded thin metal. And the ones who do weld thin metal are the ones saying to use a mig or tig machine. But if a cheap stick welder that doesn't have a whole range of adjustments is all you have, well you gotta piss with the cock you got. I really don't see how penetration is an issue in this case because you're doing a series of tacks because the electrode is literally penetrating too much to do a whole bead

    • @igorkevorkian16
      @igorkevorkian16 3 месяца назад +2

      Tack with a 'tombstone'. I guess.
      Anything else learn to adjust your machine properly and use proper angles on the rod. Don't use hard penetrating rods on thin stuff.
      Guys sayin MIG probably don't know that won't help you either.
      My old job was working railcars. Stick and MIG on everything from 20g galvanized to 1" thick structural steel.
      A series of tacks will make metal stick together but I wouldn't suggest doing anything important that way.

      Penetration is not the main issue it's contaminated brittle welds that's the issue. Those tacks don't give the flux on the rod time to burn and eliminate the oxygen from the weld area before the arc is cut so every one of those tacks is contaminated. And I'm not even talking about the slag inclusions... Sure piss with the cock you got but then don't be surprised when it fails and the fuckin toilet falls apart and dumps everywhere cause your welds were all dog shit. Use the right tool for the job and you won't ever have problems. If you don't have the right tool maybe it's time to reconsider whether this is a job for you to be doing at all. I mean, go buy a little flux core box for $100 it will handle this shit all day long and actually produce solid dependable welds instead of hacking it like this.

    If the thickness of the iron is 2ml then just use 40-50 amperes, and never use above that because that is the power that produces electrical energy.

    Welding very thin sheet metal may be outside most welders experience. Guys welding cars with mig frequently use these techniques to weld rust damaged panels together. There is no option to use less power / thinner wire. You need a certain energy to fuse steel.
    Car are actually built of spot welds , not runs. Is anyone going to argue there in no case for intermittent welding of thin steel?

      @@marekbarycz4397I’ve got stick and mig, not tig. I can weld a continuous bead on thin steel with the rust clean off with MIG. No chance with stick, even with 1.6mm rods. Spot weld are intermittent and cars are built out of them. You’ve just got to piss with the dick you have, not the one you’d like.

    There is a knob on your welder. Try to turn it down. And you can also try thinner electrodes on thinner metal. Dipping the stick for a 1/4 of a second will only lay the weld on the top of the metal.

    Is there an actual professional welder who can comment on what was done wrong or right? Someone with experience in mig, tig, and stick welding. Im curious on how to weld this properly if the second weld was incorrect. Was the temperature too high? Was the stick diameter too thick? Should they have used a different welding type or technique?

    My personal preference in this scenario I wouldn't use 1/8 rod. I'd opt for 3/32 or 1/16. Then I would run it flat. But to be honest, I'd rather use a Mig or Tig on anything under 1/8" thick.

    I cant call that a technique. If you were to hold the arc from the top material to the bottom along the way you'd get perfect fusion and the weld would look very similar but wouldnt have undercut issues. Also turn down the amperage about 4-5. ifykyk
