About the Blue Spark SL having "less bass": there are two switches in the front, the one on the left is a high-pass filter (it reduces low frequencies)... It would have been interesting to listen a comparison on how much "bassier" it would be with that switch on "flat".
I have the Blue Spark SL too and I'm sure he had it with high pass filter on. When it's off with a good preamp, trust me, your low frequencies are amazing ! I use it for voice-over, songs and other things. I have a Brauner Phantom and other mics but this Blue Spark SL is a Blue Spark with more sensitivity, less noise, high pass and pad filters. Believe me, it's a professional mic for a professional result ! In my opinion, this mic is better than my Brauner Phantom !
It was quite impossible to find the Blue Spark in France so I got the Blue Spark SL and believe me with a good preamp it's a really good mic ! I recommend the Blue Spark SL over the Blue Spark ! You can't go wrong with it !!! ;-)
The Spark SL was “brighter” (not as warm) as the other two. The Spark sounded the warmest to me, followed by the Yeti, then the SL. In my opinion the SL would be good for people with more bass in their voice (make vocals for instance), while the original spark would be better for female vocals. Just my opinion. The Yeti kinda splits the difference between the two. Keep in mind I was listening to this on sn ipad pro, but I could just barely make out a difference.
Amazing video! Great job! I think the Spark SL sounds amazing! Currently have an Audio Technica AT4040, but I might go for a Rode Procaster to reduce the echo of my room, as it's untreated.
Hey thank you so much! Ive hear the AT4040 is great mic I need to check that one out. I also have the Procaster best freaking twitch streaming/ podcast mic ever. thanks for the comment
Thanks Dude!! This was perfect!! Have you used the Bluebird too? If so how did that rate vs the Spark OG ( which was my favorite as well in this video)
The Blue Spark original is a great mic. I have MUCH more expensive mice in my mic locker, but I find myself reaching for the Spark more than any of the others. I really like how it colors the sound. Not too over the top, but it just adds some "excitement" to vocals, for lack of a better term. I record mainly rap vocals.
I've just got a spark SL and was going to replace it with the yeti pro which I have also but on usb but after watching his I won't. The yeti pro does have stereo sound where the spark is mono but the sound is deeper on the spark for sure.
i was searching about the differences between blue spark original and blue spark sl....the differences are huge! i watched a video shootout between neumann 87 vs blue spark original and i was amazed how close they were...the original blue spark has a warmth and it has a smooth top end...sounds like an expensive good mic!!! the SL version sounds like most cheap chinese mics very harsh! so...i will look for a second hand blue spark -ORIGINAL ! thank you for your video!
gotta go with the Yeti pro. Over my speakers anyway, the original spark and Yeti pro sound almost identical but the pro let a bit more bass through. The SL was definitely the cleanest audio.
Fantastic video! Just exactly what I was wondering about. Thanks so much for setting everything up so carefully. And very nice presentation style. Cheers.
I got a blue spark sl a few months ago, But hated it. My first one came out of the box broken. The diaphragm was very loose and one of the switches were broken. I sent it back and got a new one. This one was fine out of the box, but overtime the diaphragm loosened. I was fed up and I quickly replaced it with a shure sm7b. I also saw another review of it. The guy said that the switches were also broken too. I haven’t seen any reports of the Blue Spark original having a high defect rate or breaking overtime. This proves 2 things. 1. Blue’s quality control has been getting worse lately, and 2. You should definitely get the original over the sl. Thank me later.
Nice I'm looking for a good microphone for singing / RUclips videos / rapping . Do you recomend the spark SL? Also which interface with it the focus rite your using? Let me know plz
For me, the original gets it hands down. Very warm. I'm a narrator and my voice isn't quite as deep as I'd like. I like that this brings out the bass and lower mids.
hi, the video is pretty cool, I'm a sells rep at guitar center and a 13+ years studio professional I'm just curious, did you have the low cut switch (the left switch) toggled on or not (flipped left is on) I noticed that after the sound test it was toggled on, if so that would explain why you hear less lows, which would be the equivalent of the "focus button" (little orange button on the bottom) on the back of the original spark. Just a thought.
ahhhhh thanks for the insight yes i kept it on the left as thats how i use my other Mic's I was trying to research low pass filters but couldn't find proper information into exactly what they do. Thanks for the info!
On the b-roll at 4:34 I see that the bass roll of switch (left) is activated, and that is probably why the Spark SL sounded a little bit less bassy. (if it was activated when recording)
Did you record with the pad on or off for the SL? I think you did record with it on, but just wanted to make sure. If you did, could you tell me any differences that you hear in the mic (when pad is on). Do you get a better low end from the mic when you turn it off (the pad)?
Hey Mike, yes you are correct. someone else also mentioned this to me (like i said i really know nothing about audio ;) ) and i was able to get more fuller sound out of the Spark SL
I agree with you review... I seem to like the sound thats coming out of the blue spark original.. I'm trying to decide what to buy right now.. thanks for the review..
Hey dude! Nice video. Strengths: The camera work, mic quality, subtle background music, quality of your video cam and lighting. Weakness: The slight mic echo is not very noticeable, but if you want to fix it get some sound repression foam (not sure of the exact name) for your room's walls. good job!
Do you still have these Mics? People keep saying you had a filter on the SL so can you redo the test if that was the case comparing the SL and the original?
I had it on 4k quality, and i honestly could not really tell who was a clear winner. I'm wondering how the Bluebird SL might compare. Thanks for a really good video on sound review quality.
the blue spark OG, has more warmth, the sl is clean....and did you use the focus button on the spark? you should try it to tighten it up bit but keep the low end
I have the classic Spark and have used it for a few years now. I have always wondered if there is anything i can get better for both price and convenience. The newer BlueRaspberry seemed like a good choice as well but i can't get a better sound than the original. You comparison proves the point in my opinion. Blue Spark Original 4Life!
I am however purchasing a Blue Rasberry today to test it out. It's on sale for $159 at Best Buy and it is worth the 30-day return policy to see if I can audition on the go through my iPhone. I wouldn't narrate a book with it. I would really like a Baby Bottle ...
It seems pretty cool. I just really want to try the Rasberry for some reason. The thing is voiceover is like having good hair. It just looks good and sometimes the mic makes a marginal difference. I just listened to all of my audible 5 minute retail samples and you can tell when I used the snowball I returned. I can remember the room I was in when I recorded each and a total difference from the beginning until the recent books when I stepped up my home studio game. Its like golf too, overanalyzing can kill your game ... Voiceover is like hair and golf.
The spark sl is supposed to sound the same. Also the sl had a bass cut switch which was active. Which is why you think there is no bass. And the filter maybe turned on. The sl is an update to the spark being given more music applications by using bass roll-off and high-pass filter switches
i'm listening via headphones, in-ear-monitors by shure. Spark SL sounds BETTER. was super pleasing to my ears. its more even and consistent and no clips, which, i found with the original oneS you like better. THIS video was super helpful. thank you.
Great video, thanks for sharing! .. I don't think that 4k vs 1080 has any influence on the audio codec that is used.. it's basically compressed as a separate entity; if you checkout defaults on premier they both encode at the same bitrate.
Yeti is more coarse, grainy. Spark original is smooth with a touch more bass than SL. Spark SL has a touch more clarity; carves out the words more but a bit less low end.
well, a low pass is the opposite of a low cut (hi pass) which could be why you couldn't find out what effect it would have had on a voice. It would be great to hear the comparison with both mics unaltered, the spark SL definitely has a more defined and articulate upper register. I'd try it here at work but we don't have any original sparks and the listening space pretty much makes everything sound good.
Hey Teezo, a hum is definitely not a normal thing, it’s possible you have some bad wiring or a shielding problem. Could be a microwave in your home a wireless phone or the volume could be up too loud. So many factors but I would def send it in to get repaired.
When you plugged the Blue Yeti Pro into the audio interface. Did you call the two XLR inputs? Using the cable that came with the Yeti Pro, which separates right and left? Thank you.
I stream off My iphone, currently have a blue yeti hooked up to it through a power hub to USB lighting adapter. I was wondering what would recommend for me , I do cooking live streams
Great review! I agree, the Original has great, rich bass. probably best for music. I think the SL has the most lifelike, most real voice sound. Since I'm looking to RUclips some game commentary, voice is the most important. It sounds like you're right there in the room. The Yeti sounds rather dull and flat. it does the job, but no polish to it.
@@FranklinReid_ I figured out from trail and error that the one on the right lowers the volume (for backup singing maybe?). I don't know what the difference would be between the high pass and low pass setting, however.

I do agree with you ! the Blue Spark would also be my choice.I 'll buy one tomorrow. Great video ! More please! Speak a bit slower for foreigners (french)
This isn't a great test actually. Even an inch or two difference in how far away you are from a microphone and you completely change the characteristics of the mic. I think the Blue Spark SL sounds more crisp without a lot of bass
yes i agree
its mesnt for vocals over music, not youtube videos
no way, the original Spark is WAY better
It really depends on your voice

I like the fullness of the Spark.

Yeah the original spark has a warmer tone to it.
Glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed that (it means my ears still work properly).

Hey great video, definitely think the Spark is better myself but I got a unrelated question what kind of lighting are you using for this video ?
Hey thre, thanks and the type of lighting i use is a combo of LED strips along with LIFX bulbs, hope this helps!
I recorded all my music on my page on the blue spark with a scarlet Focusrite 2.0 interface definitely a good combo

You're not supposed to lick the pop filter. That's why the Spark and Yeti sound low and distorted, it's called the proximity effect.
And the S's
You're actually supposed to get close to blues mics... it even explains why you should in the manuals for them

Franklin Reid so...I looked on eBay for one of these and, after the algorithm figured it out, the prices shot up to $350 from $80. Crazy.
