I already have a Z5, and a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 G2 + Nikon 14-30 f4 (I do portraits and real estate stills) I’m looking to get into video, but I’d prefer to not switch brands again. Is the Z6III my best upgrade path? Z8 is big $$$ 🙃
I love how the very beginning he immediately says terrible color science in which they are one of the best of right now… Besides if I’m upgrading from my D5300 it has an improvement in dynamic range after 800iso and is the same before that, and I’ve been impressed with my 5300 so I have absolutely no issue with that.
The Z30 has fixed, large lugs with an oblong opening, while the rest of the Z series is like your Z6III. I assume you can remove the jangly piece leaving a small lug with a circular hole which would be more suitable for a system like the Peak Design straps, so it shouldn't really be a complaint, except maybe they could have put the jangly pieces in a plastic bag so that you don't have to be burdened with the task of detaching them from the camera.
@@unbroken1010 tell this to your couple on weddings when one of the cards goes corrupt. Fuji , Sony , Panasonic (maybe even canon) has this feature. Only Nikon refuses to give this to us. @@IliasKoureasare you sure? I thought almost no camera had redundant video recording. Photo yes, video no. What exact models are you talking about from Sony (not the video line up, FX models).
@@lekkerpruven887 most Sony cameras can from the past 4 years like the r4 , r5 (which are photo centric cameras) fx3 , a7iv etc. Fuji cameras can after the xt4 maybe even before that. Same with Panasonic with their GH cameras and the s5iix and s5ii. So yeah. Nikon is basically putting their videographers work in risk.
Great unboxing video. I'm looking for some 240fps footage in the future and obviously some Nikon boardroom meetings :) The stabilization should work quite good with long lenses. Have fun with your new camera.
15:20 - I commented a year ago to not get scammed by Nikon. Video is an after thought on Nikon, same for all other systems except Panasonic. I know you were drawn in for the wildlife telephoto options but it's not going to be as good as you hoped. Maybe I'm wrong but I doubt it. I hope this donation will help you recover a little from this mistake. You should have stuck to your Sony 200-600. Master rapid S-LOG exposure, HDR Wheels tone mapping in Resolve, etc. Oh well, I tried lol.
@@SMGJohn I know he wants to be happy with it but I'm not positive after that horrendously shakey red wing blackbird footage at 24fps with whatever other Nikon camera he was using. You shouldn't have to do slow motion non stop to avoid camera shake. It means the camera system sucks for handheld video if telephoto shots can't be stabilized reasonably well at a normal real time playback without anything more than IBIS.
@@SMGJohn Bro he probably still has the Panasonic 200mm f/2.8 MFT lens hanging around. Yes, manual focus isn't linear with the teleconverters but with the 1.4x that's 560mm equivalent with f/8.0 equivalent toneh (with f/4.0 exposure) which is only like 2/3rd stops less toneh ability than this over priced Nikon prime. A difference yes but he could have saved some money and got a GH7. Or go all out and try the Olympus 150-400. I'm sure the Nikon lens itself is good but the camera system is gonna irritate him so much.
@@BackusCreativeImaging The GH7 would be great, although I do agree that no PDAF C-AF in anything more than 1080p 150fps is a huge bummer. The Olympus 300mm lens actually works really well on the G9M2 I have despite no sync stab, the IBIS in the G9M2 actually lets me handhold the darn thing, same cannot be said about any other camera system, specially the Sony he has is far shakier then what I can do with the Oly prime telephoto. And the Olympus 150-400mm F4.5 is, its a lens I covet a lot, my God, nothing like it exist. 300 to 800mm constant aperture? And gorgeous Olympus optics? People sleep on Olympus they have 3D pop to Kingdom comes with their primes, specially the 75mm F1.8
@SMGJohn I've been manually focusing for 10 years, so the lack of PDAF at the higher frame rates isn't a big deal for me (although it will be nice when they get that sorted out on future models). Unless a critter moves really fast, I can manually focus quickly and rarely miss. But I agree with you that it's not ideal. I own the 200mm f/.8. I'm glad to know the 300mm f/4.0 stabilizes nicely on the G9 II. The Olympus 150-400 should in theory stabilize quite well with just IBIS only on the GH6, G9II and GH7. It'll probably be better than Sony's Active SteadyShot EIS on the A7SIII. My only issue is the 150-400 doesn't have a manual focus clutch, and Linear Focusing in the menu on Panasonic is only compatible with Panasonic lenses (I think). So I'd be stuck with non linear manual focus. That's the only thing keeping me on the fence with the 150-400. Aside from that, it's among the best wildlife lenses. I might try it out someday anyway!
If you use the lens with the lens foot upwards, remember to turn off manual focus in autofocus mode, that would be "a15" setting in the focus settings menu. And also pull the strap buckles up while inserting the cards.
Yes. Nikon's best ergonomics body feel in hand was actually was with D7500. (yeah I know the drawbacks of the specs). Zf indicates poor quality / compromised dials, button, and much more. If I waited from FEB 2024 to trade in gear toward that ZF, I might have bought this Z6iii, and be satisfied anyway. In deep with F mount gear and lenses to adapt. Most of all for "N", It is well past time to make a smarter menu system.
The 600 will rock your world you will literally see your jaw drop old Nikon has been doing those longer than anyone and they know how to effing do it damn it's pricey hey serious bit of kit. I'm officially jealous but I don't do wildlife shooting so I don't need such things you still have to get a Zeiss 35 mm f2 for the god experience
I am constantly bumping open the card door on my z6ii. Such a flaw. The files are pretty great out of it though. My 13 yr old still kills it for photo files though.
Congrat's on the Z6iii! I have one of each of the Z6's, and the iii is well beyond anything Nikon has produced for this price point. It's an amazing camera!
Truly underrated as a reviewer. The press to dial button and idiotic always at the bottom - oh I passed the setting - scroll up two steps - menu, is nothing anyone have mentioned... I could be wrong. But it's the little things you have to live with and that is super important to save our angel-like fingers and not get arthritis from all that hard work when we grow older! But serious - underrated! Looking forward to the next 10 videos! :)
Hmm, think it's finally time to move on from my D5, to a Z6ii. Think I'll skip Z6iii - my big Nikons are supposed to take over from my OM-1 when the light gets very very low, but the mkiii doesn't seem to offer enough advantage there from what PtP showed.
If you're using spot focus/dynamic area on the Z6ii, it's equivalent to the D5/D850. However, all the other modes, people/animal... man it's really hit or miss. I've had the Z6ii for like 2 years. I still prefer using my D850. When I use my Z6ii with the automated autofocus modes I feel like I have to take way more photos just to get the same amount of keepers. (Especially if you're more than 15 feet away from your subjects) I do get lots of photos. Stick with the D5 for now, if you really want the Z6 line just wait like 6 months when the price drops like $500 and get the iii. When I know I have to get the shot right the first time the Z6ii is staying home, the D850 or my D3s is coming with me. They both rarely miss.
@@bailey.nt86 thanks for the advice. I am a spot and joystick autofocusser - would be nice to have decent face tracking though, but if the spot C-AF matches D5 then I'll be ok - plus more AF points, IBIS and silent shutter bonuses. I've got to rule out the Z6iii because of the DR and ISO problems Photons to Photos found - I need that low light performance from my FF camera. Z8 would be ideal but it's files are big and it's a bit pricey .
I was really hoping that in Z6III they would have abandoned the stupid Button-Dial design but apparently they think that we can't control our fingers and would change the settings all the time by accident...Bummer. 😢 You eventually get used to it (comming from a Z6) but I would prefer not to have it again, if, that is, I deside to change to MarkIII
Custom Controls Kasey, start there and if you have trouble search it for other nature shooters/video shooters suggestion. Back button focus is also highly recommended. I would gladly walk you through it but sold my Z6 over a year ago, so it's a blur of half memories.
@@cameraconspiraciesYou can map it to your I-menu. On the Z50 and Z6 it is one press, and 4K24p and 1080 120p are next to each other so it's just 1)Press I-Menu and 2) either use the back dial or d-pad to get to the each mode. I think the back dial is what you're used to right? As for more wild life settings, though they do cater to photographers more, check out Hudson Henry, and Steve Perry as they have some of the most extensive Nikon custom settings walk throughs with many real world hacks that help allot when shooting birds. If the mentioned I-menu method doesn't work let me know. I have a fellow wild life shooter friend who is much more Nikon Savy that I can ask.
@@cameraconspiracies my reply vanished.. but this is more simplified. You can either go to Controls or Movie and then Customize I-menu. Map "QUAL" to one of the boxes. Then you simply press the i-menu button (it remembers last position) and scroll with the rear dial or d-pad to get to the frame rate/quality you want. Since I am working with a Z50 it's just 4K24 and HD120 right next to eachother, so I imagine you have to scroll a few more, but it's pretty fast using the rear dial. I almost seem to remember a way to limit available video modes, but don't quote me on that. I highly recommend Hudson Henry and Steve Perry for wild life customization hacks. They are both very experienced, and though their focus is photography, allot of it will apply to what you're doing. BTW, I appreciated your reaction when you finally got the lens out of it's box. Nikon lenses are a bit special.
@@filmstudiojapanDOTcom Thank you, but that's not going to work for 2 reasons. It's 10 framerates between 6k 60p and 4k 120p. And HD 240p requires that you exit out of N-Raw as well. I don't think there's any getting around this terrible left mode dial lol.
I am looking forward to Sony having a better format than s-log 3. Honestly, I LOVE S-Log 3 for certain scenarios, like shooting in broad day light. I often shoots groups of people under the shade of trees with the background fully lit by the sun and it really saves the shots from looking like utter crap. That said, in hectic shoots I sometimes forget to turn off s-log for situations where it's really destructive. In any low-contrast scenario it ruins the auto-focus and in high ISO situations it introduces a LOT of noise. So, I vote for RAW or some other Sony format that can't be called RAW for legal reasons but is better than S-Log 3 for the next A7V and A7sIV.
Most people running companies don't have the slightest clue what they're doing. They just run a basic formula to average things out in the end, but on any given sale they might actually be losing money. We've had sales where our shipping cost alone was more than the customer paid for their entire order, let alone the cost of the product itself, packaging, our time, advertising budget, 3rd party commissions and fees, etc. etc.
Kasey, I thought you would have shown the box more and read all the writing on the side. followed by your thoughts and feeling about the construction of the box. As you opened the box, you needed to flip through the paper materials and read them extensively. It makes tensions as we anticipate the camera, Then you pause before taking the camera out and tell a story about the future excitement said camera will bring. Hopefully, we get a more complete opening box video, but very good video, thanks for sharing your absolutely positive experience!
Have to put myself in the right frame of mind where I need to take each comment with a grain of salt. Not a camera I plan to buy since I want more than 24 Mpixels. Liked the Z9 and Nikkor lenses I bought and kept for a year but decided it was too heavy and there was no Z8 yet or this version of the Z6III. Currently shooting with several Sony bodies like the A1 and A7RV and compact C bodies for travel and an EOS R5. Guess I will wait and see what the R5 II brings. Thank you and take care.
@@زهيرسلمان Sony definitely has strengths I appreciate which why I’ve stayed with them. Canon, Nikon, and Fuji do too but even though I do own a APS-C body I’m committed to full frame. As I said I also like my Canon system and their L lenses but I think you won’t find low cost High Quality lenses in Canon these days ( just my personal opinion).
I chuckled through this. I’m a total sceptic about expensive new high tech cameras. Let them bed in with the rich beta testers for a few years, & then buy them used (if they turn out to be okay.) What was the last brand new camera I bought? Nikon FE - sometime back in the 1980’s LOL.
Looking fwd to the upcoming videos on this camera and lens. I'm not even a Nikon user and I'm thoroughly enjoying the review already. I actually LOVE how you point out the small gripes that can only be discovered by actually USING the camera. The card slot door issue... I totally understand and would feel your pain. That's the kind of stuff other reviewers NEVER point out! Well done. Well done indeed.
More like his own weird quirks I can do nothing but praise every dial lock ever since I have had a camera without one. Always the worst when you think you're in manual or a User mode and the dial shifted in your bag to something like program and you're trying to figure out what is up with your settings while you're used to a preset.
I'm shook that the Z6 doesn't come with a charger anymore. I got one with all of my Nikon cameras and i think it's absolutely necessary if you have to charge more then one battery...stupid idea Nikon! I always put a long arca swiss plate on all of my lenses. Then they are easy to carry an you can attach some stuff on top of it. 🙂
I know that some people like it, but I find the small LCD screen useless. I had it on the Sony A99 and A99ii and used it maybe two times. That information is already available elsewhere anyhow and I look through the EVF most of the time anyhow. It seems to me like something left from a bygone era of film shooting. Can't see it if your camera is high on a tripod, can't see it if you're handholding a camera. Seriously! The main downside of having that screen is that it forces the manufacturers to place some of the dials and/or buttons on the left side, which I agree is just the worst. The left side should have no buttons or perhaps a custom button or two for functions that are important but aren't used frequently. Even so, I'd rather just use a quick menu.

Amazing that the real photographers, unbox, load the batteries, insert the cards with out getting an orgasmic feeling about the card door or card slot, get out and shoot pictures and show their pictures, the reason they bough the gear, no, today 99% of RUclipsrs make their money from unboxing equipment, talk crap, give opinions and direct traffic to their affiliated links, show no results and rather wear a hear piece. The new world of camera industry, not photography, in the world of art we discuss art, not the paintbrush.
For some good minutes of the video, I was worried that Nikon directly have sent this camera for you to review it. But then I understood that you bought it with your own money, so sighed in relief.
Glue the button down...maybe.🤔😆 Oh, BTW, just watch your own video and you’ll know how to repack it.😉 And just a suggestion: if you’re not using a tripod save the weight and remove the foot and carry the lens using a camera shoulder strap. That definitely beats holding it for hours and risking an expensive drop.
I enjoy your videos so much! RUclips seems to make it as difficult as possible to comment. I usually watch on an Android device and when I try to comment it says "open the app, dummy". God help us with AI, eh? All the best, Bill

Yes, it is
The Nose detect AF is killing me!😂🤘
you should do more unboxing, this was so interesting since you actually touch the camera and talk about the grip and feeling
Why? Don’t you like the sniff and wind tunnel tests that the Fro does? Eh heh heh
@@BernardSolomon That's nonsense, always cringed when he does that.
With Sony, he’s Lizard-Man.
With Nikon, he’s a cherry tomato.
With Canon colors, he’s golden, so to speak.
9:36 me and my S5 ain't on that a good terms ,but this does make me appreciate my panniboi once in a while.
S5 can hold it's own, especially at P Diddy after parties
I love how the very beginning he immediately says terrible color science in which they are one of the best of right now…
Besides if I’m upgrading from my D5300 it has an improvement in dynamic range after 800iso and is the same before that, and I’ve been impressed with my 5300 so I have absolutely no issue with that.
standing up, holding the camera, quiet for a few seconds.. “it’s not great”
hahaha cc never disappoints
The Z30 has fixed, large lugs with an oblong opening, while the rest of the Z series is like your Z6III. I assume you can remove the jangly piece leaving a small lug with a circular hole which would be more suitable for a system like the Peak Design straps, so it shouldn't really be a complaint, except maybe they could have put the jangly pieces in a plastic bag so that you don't have to be burdened with the task of detaching them from the camera.
Shoutout to the g9 grip! Amazing ergonomics!
You’re going to love it!
Press to turn dials are satans design. And why doesnt nikon allow dual SD video recording?
Because one SD card of your p Diddy after parties is enough..
@@unbroken1010 tell this to your couple on weddings when one of the cards goes corrupt. Fuji , Sony , Panasonic (maybe even canon) has this feature. Only Nikon refuses to give this to us. Even the z9 and z8 don't allow redundant recording.
I bet they have some kind of a relationship with atomos and are selling us on the ninja V
Its so you don’t accidently turn the dials, you don’t like it but its there for a reason
Look forward to see what else you capture with the Nikon Z6iii.
Congrats on the setup, I have the Z6III and 180-600mm and it’s great, but I’ll take your PF if it’s going cheap 😅.
really loving your new dimmed lights set up.
He is gonna be on life support after the Nikon vampire has been sucking his soul dry of dreams and hopes.
@@BackusCreativeImaging
The GH7 would be great, although I do agree that no PDAF C-AF in anything more than 1080p 150fps is a huge bummer.
It looks very premium honestly
that press and hold switch at the top is like a nostalgia throwaway for those who used to like their Nikon F4 and such 😍
If you use the lens with the lens foot upwards, remember to turn off manual focus in autofocus mode, that would be "a15" setting in the focus settings menu.
The dark background is killing it
I am constantly bumping open the card door on my z6ii. Such a flaw. The files are pretty great out of it though. My 13 yr old still kills it for photo files though.
I also hate Locks on Dials. I have never had a dial move in storage they are too rigid to move with even 1 hand.
guess those menu jump from 1 to next rather than page hop; why can't you use touch screen to skip past pages?
You eventually get used to it (comming from a Z6) but I would prefer not to have it again, if, that is, I deside to change to MarkIII
You can't control your fingers. We know this from your video at the P Diddy after parties..
Custom Controls Kasey, start there and if you have trouble search it for other nature shooters/video shooters suggestion. Back button focus is also highly recommended. I would gladly walk you through it but sold my Z6 over a year ago, so it's a blur of half memories.
There is no custom control that will change from 6k 60p to 4k 120p and HD 240p instantly like the mode dial does.
@@cameraconspiracies Let me reach out to some friends and see if I can find a work around for you.
This camera is very consistent with users talking about it instead of sharing photos from it. And sharing the images of the box lol
Nose detect AF. It starts with 'N', like Nikon. Ken Rockwell's site has an excellent review of this camera.
Im gonna sell my xh2s and a6700 to get this

Most people running companies don't have the slightest clue what they're doing. They just run a basic formula to average things out in the end, but on any given sale they might actually be losing money. We've had sales where our shipping cost alone was more than the customer paid for their entire order, let alone the cost of the product itself, packaging, our time, advertising budget, 3rd party commissions and fees, etc. etc.
I worked for a guy that used to say “We lose money with every sale, but we make up for it with volume.”
@@terrygoyanI need his contacts, got a business proposition for him.
"I will never get it packed again" - Dude, you literally have recorded the unpacking... Should be no problem to rebuid the package😂
Do you recommend Sony?
@@زهيرسلمان Sony definitely has strengths I appreciate which why I’ve stayed with them. Canon, Nikon, and Fuji do too but even though I do own a APS-C body I’m committed to full frame. As I said I also like my Canon system and their L lenses but I think you won’t find low cost High Quality lenses in Canon these days ( just my personal opinion).
Fun, flaw-filled episode... Have a rockin' day!
That inserting of CF express card. The cover is not fully open yet.
Also, we Nikon users put in the CF card before we put on the 600mm
I'm shook that the Z6 doesn't come with a charger anymore. I got one with all of my Nikon cameras and i think it's absolutely necessary if you have to charge more then one battery...stupid idea Nikon!
I always put a long arca swiss plate on all of my lenses. Then they are easy to carry an you can attach some stuff on top of it. 🙂
Best unboxing ever 😅
Yes! You did state the camera in video yesterday. You're awesome Kasey!
nice red nose Nikon...Rudolf is here early for Christmas
(speaking to the crowd) There's nothing worse that people defending and getting all mad regarding a brand ... like holy cow most of you all act like kpop stans. Learn to enjoy life and have fun, CC it's about banter and fun and the occasional insightful critic/comment, much better content that 98% of what you can find in YT.

Congrats on the 600PF. I hope your computer can handle the 6k.
6:00 love nikon, but have to agree on the lock on the mode dial :( what a bad idea.

That aftermarket battery block makes it a no for me dog.
