I love that she’s able to present a VERY serious subject in a fun upbeat manner. So many times serious subjects are presented in such a dark way that the result is offen the opposite of what was intended….

I think Kirstin was mostly referring to Ben, her now fiancé, in this song. He seemed to always have her back and to cheer her on. I'm sure that the sentiment applied to others also but the words mostly seemed to apply to Ben. Thanks for the great reactions. PTX also performs their original song "Be My Eyes" on the current World Tour. You may want to react to it also.

I think you will love By My Eyes by Kirstie. She wrote the song herself, and she is the lead singer in that original! Any of the Lucky One originals would be amazing for you to watch and listen to!!

I believe Kirstie and Matt wrote this song during covid lockdown. I believe they were filmed separately and combined together. There is some back track you can hear in the background, but still actual live singing!!

Since this came out during the pandemic, they actually never had a chance to perform live until recently. I believe they are doing this one as part of a medley of originals on their current tour.
EDIT: I should have watched the whole video before commenting! ❤❤. The whole Hollywood Bowl 2022 concert was amazing!

As someone with mental illness this song means a lot to me because there are times when I don't love myself, if it weren't for the people that love me when I don't, I wouldn't be here, so it's a very meaningful song for me. Love your PTX reactions.

Love this one so much!! Kirsten was the major writer on this one with some input from the other members. The Lucky Ones is an album of all originals by the group. This whole album is awesome and my favorite of all their albums!! Also you should react to The Making of Evergreen. 2021’s Christmas album. It gives you a little glacé into their creative and recording process. It’s awesome! This was 1st album post pandemic and they were so excited and inspired to be back together in the flesh and recording together. Love your reactions!! ❤

Such a lovely song. Makes me sad coz it makes me think about people who have depression. Everyone needs someone to love them when they don't. Love Pentatonix. It feels good that they're still around after so many years.

Many people don't realize just how great Matt's range is. This is partly because it appears that his range is still developing, but based on what I heard from him at their Denver concert last November he can now sing just as low as Avi, and has a top note near the top of a tenor's normal range. Notice that at the end when they dropped the bass and the beatboxing Kevin and Matt were still singing. Not surprising from Kevin, but Matt keeps surrprising me with just how versatile he is.

This is one of my favourites from them. As someone who struggles with their mental health and has lovely family and friends, it hits hard. It's cleverly written to work not only with spouses but many different relationships. Ive even seen a religious person say it explains the relationship with god. So it is written in a smart way where people can relate it to their own life. Kirstin has some of the best lyrics in the band.

I'm so excited for y'all that you're gonna be seeing them live this year! I am 63 & let me tell you - every time I see them perform in person it is a life-changing experience!! I have followed them since they won the sing-off, & it didn't take long for me to fall in love with each & every one of them, becoming very motherly towards them. And now I am emotionally invested in them as human beings, not just singers & performers. I cry tears of joy when they have something wonderful happen (engagements, babies- Kevin's daughter Kaia & Kirstie's daughter Elliana, winning awards, etc.) & I weep with them when something bad happens to one of them. You know, just like we would share in the joys & sorrows of our own children.) Basically I just love them. And I think you guys are definitely becoming pentaholics too! So I am totally thrilled for you that you are seeing them this summer! I am seeing them in Charlotte, NC in August. I sure wish I could see them in GA too & get to meet you guys. But I do look forward to hearing all about your experience afterwards!! They are absolutely amazing in concert!!!
Y'all have a great day today!!

I wonder if you noticed this really cool thing: the snippet of "wo-oh..." that they had the audience repeat after them at 8:30 in your video, they recorded... and then played it back as part of the harmony for the next song starting at 12:17. I noticed that they have been actually doing this type of thing a lot - recording snippets of what they (or the audience) is doing, live, then having their sound engineer play that back at a later time or throughout the song - such as the snapping/clapping thing in another video that you reacted to. It's a very cool effect.

I think you hit the nail on the head! I’ve often thought that obviously this song would and should apply to a significant other, but I think Kirstie had her friends, the PTX FAMILY, in mind when she wrote this.

The first clip is from a late night TV talk show (I don't remember, but probably Jimmy Kimmel, who's a Pentaholic). They used to just go on the shows and sing live, but during Covid there was no audience and the bits of the show were taped and broadcast later. PTX did record it live, all singing together, but on a set and filmed. When they do a "live" taping, they will usually sing it 3-4 times and take the best version. Only rarely will they edit different audio takes together. In this case, they must have also done extra video, with each singer lip-synching alone, far away and close-up, and in different positions, and the videographer pasted it together. You can tell if a Pentatonix video is live by 1) You will see mics. 2) Scott throws in extra riffs and runs, partly to differentiate it from the studio version and also 'cause it's fun.

All of the Pentatonix members have co-written original songs for the group, and they also usually work with experienced pop songwriters. There are Wikipedia pages for all the PTX albums that list writing credit for each song. This is from their 2021 originals album, "The Lucky Ones" and the credit for "Love Me When I Don't" goes to Kirstie and a songwriter called Fran Hall (who works for the Sony label and has co-written songs with a lot of artists), and the two men who produced the album, Koma and Book. So, she wrote it, she gets the lead.

They did some layering on the studio track. I think that is why Kirstie is doing more harmonies on the live version. It just wouldn’t sound the same without her harmonies.

Since the Hollywood Bowl performance last year, a lot of folks uploaded parts of the concert onto RUclips. As close as I can figure it, Pentatonix sang for about 27 hours that night just stopping a bit every now and then to play around with the audience. Take care all.

Just a warning about the concert -- Pentatonix audiences are appreciative but often not very energetic. A lot of their fans are older, know them mostly from the Christmas music and are not that familiar with current pop music. So it's sometimes hard to get the audience to interact. BTW, I know there are fans who miss Avi, but Matt is the best hype man ever and if anyone can get an audience going, it's him. Your job is to help Matt get the energy up. 🎶

Re: Mitch singing much of the lead. I have seen them do this a bit in composition if it sounds better. Still suggesting the recording of Evergreen for nice incite into composition before you see them in concert. I think it does add perspective that would likely be hard to gain otherwise. Nice review, nice pick.
