I love the idea that by the rules of Metal Gear’s gameplay, between then and now, THIS is what hand-to-hand combat between two masters of CQC looked like, and I can imagine hand-animated flashbacks to this fight looking exactly like the systema-style striking and throwing that MGS3 had.

It's funny how the fist fight seems pretty underwhelming after hearing about Snake and Gray Fox having a battle to the death in a mine field when Snake talks about it in MGS1, but since Metal Gear 2 actually came first there's no reason it should have to be held up to the hype that MGS1 retroactively built around it. Would be really cool to see it redone in a Fox Engine remake of Metal Gear 2.
If this game was released outside of Japan on a more popular console and got a faithful port and translation this would probably be remembered as a classic.
If I'm remembering correctly he is modeled after the actor Tom Berenger, then in later re-released versions of the game Yoji Shinkawa redesigned all the characters to make them unique.
They were fighting in a minefield, MGS1 later mentioned that Fox got blow up to pieces on a landmine and the Patriots took whatever was left of him to convert him into a cyborg
The Metal Gear boss was a lot better than the actual Big Boss battle where you just ran around looking for a lighter and a spray can to make a flamethrower.
I just love how all of these ideas for these games existed in times of low quality gaming! It's astounding. Even with the Metal Gear screaming when it's legs are hurt just like the gekko in mgs4. Or the codec messages. Its all so great! How did they come up with this stuff!

Back when they developed this game, that part of the storyline wasn't made up yet. Same reason why he doesn't have an artificial arm or a hook arm or whatever. The stories in these games are made up as they go along.
Just beat this game . This was last mg game that i havent beat. And now i understand that mgs V final twist makes even less sence, because if you contact Kesler during fight with Big Boss, he will say that some eastern block despot revive BB with the help from doc Madnar. It is stupid, sure. But we allready has explanation about how BB was able to survive after events of Outer Heaven incident. That makes final twist of mgs V even lesser valuable. IMHO.
It was stated to be a false rumor about Big Boss getting cybernetics from his injuries when it fact, Venom had a cybernetic arm. Also, that was meant to be a reference to Snatcher.

You can avoid touching those (and apparently Gray Fox avoids those too). According to a certain information source I read, these "explosions" you see whenever a Boss enemy dies in this game was Hideo Kojima's way of paying tribute to the Sentai live-action series (such as JetMan, for example).
There are mines around the perimiter of that room he's just not steping on them. However, I don't remember their faces looking like that in the codec. Maybe I'm just remembering wrong.

It's propably because the new ones look closer to what we're used from MGS. I suppose that's the reason why they changed them in the first place. The redrawn character portraits were first used in the japanese re-release of MG2 for Mobile Phones in 2004.

The end boss is Big Boss former Chief of the foxhound, in Metal Gear 1 he sends you to his own base so that he can kill the noob FoxHound member Solid Snake and make is own metal gear, then snake defeat him but Big Boss escaped. In Metal Gear 2 Snake is assigned by the coronel ( the same that assigne him in Metal Gear Solid) and defeat and kill Gray Fox a double agent and Big Boss (That actually it was Solidus)

No Soliton radar isn't affecting the game's engine though which is what we were talking about. The top down camera view, the control system, the way you run into a wall and Snake, Raiden or Snake would instantly flatten his back to it all similar in MGS1, MGS2 and MGS3 as they were the trilogy.

You've propably played the Subsistence version. They changed the character artworks so that they'll fit in with the later MGS designs.
