- Join us as we take Masa’s JDM Honda Civic Type R FD2 for the long awaited driving impression on the Ashinoko Skyline Touge in Hakone. The car is 100% stock. Tuned from the factory as a real handling machine for the circuits and the mountain roads, the last NA engine Type R has handling that defies its 4 door family sedan looks. Could this be the most comprehensive NA Type R before the FK2 FK8 turbo monsters?
The technical in depth review of the JDM Honda Civic FD2 Type R Part 1 is here:

I just bought the 09 fd2r. I also own track focused cars like scud and 997.1 RS, man the fd2r really surprises me. For the price, it gives the best bang for your money. The sensation driving it is very similar to those 2 special cars I own. I'm not talking speed... Just the driving feel. I'm so happy with my purchase
To me it is a car that feels very ‘one’ in the hands. To suit the high revving engine, Honda gave it a final drive of 5.062:1, possibly the highest ever in a mass production car. What this means is, traffic jams and underground carparks are a 3rd gear/15kmh affair. This and the closely stacked ratios means when at 7000-8500rpm, with a manual gearchange to perform (and conscious of the aftermath of going into 2 instead of 4 after 3rd gear), there is little mental capacity for anything else, making the driving one that requires full concentration when all out. Honda also gave it 22% stiffer springs at the rear to ensure the tail is agile, so beware when overcooking an entry and braking hard. However when it does step out, the interaction between steering, throttle and seat of the pants make it quite intuitive to contain it, provided you’re paying attention to your butt. Its nowhere as fast as many of the modern turbo machines, but on driver involvement, it does engage almost all senses.
I know a few ITR owners that also have 997 GT3. Says a lot about Type R.
Wow being a salaryman for 30 days aged him 10 years :)
That’s because; salary = we know how many hours you actually have to put in to do the job and aren’t willing to pay for that
*sniff* that uppa lip boy!!!
Bummer he won’t have time to fully enjoy the car.
This channel needs more recognition ✌
Victor Wilks I recognize it.
Sipsip taenamo
This design will never get old.
gotta love JDM Masters!!
I am driving a FD2R for the past 12 years. Still loving every bit of it. What a legend.
Nice! Which country are you in? Coming legal in Canada soon
From singapore
Lawrence Foo Awesome!
@@touringteg either get the rhd version or the lhd version
Civic Si owner here (AKA the watered down not as fast Type R for the North American market.) It's great seeing the differences between the too, great content as always guys.
I spied a z32 at 21:05. You should do a review on one. Preferably a twin turbo. One of the best 90’s car out of Japan and still a timeless design.
Totally agree! Imo the most beautiful car Nissan ever made.
Absolutely love your channel. As a vw guy, I have to say this car is amazing.
I own a CL7R and watching your videos always makes me wanna go for a drive
I wish we had this one in the states. What a fantastic car.
I drove the Ashinoko Skyline in March 2019 in an AE86. Such amazing driving road around Hakone!
knowledge and production quality on these vids so good!
Captain Bradford is like I'll take it for little test run at the end..👍
Love the Honda content! More Honda content please 😁👍🏽
the last true type r
I dunno the FK8 is very good as well fastest FF car in the world
@@f181234 fastest where? pretty sure the tyre r isnt the fastest ff,

I love hondas so much. I wish there wasn't so many people in the car scene that only care about making em 600hp, and using them to make money off people in the streets on a Friday night. Guys who really really have studied hondas just have a certain type of appreciation for them
Love this duo....Bring it up more often please
Good stuff as usual, hope to see the "behated" Euro R FN2 civic review to see what you guys think about it ;)
I am so thankful for all your great work which actually looks like real fun also! Watching you I have an impression we would be great buddies if I would live in Japan :)
Please make a footage about the Integras DC2 and DC5 🙏🏻
100% sure your FN2 review will be the best ever.
The fd2 feels more powerful because of the shorter final drive ratio (5.1) than any other type r. It' might also be the reason your getting poor gas milage. You can upshift sooner as the fd2 have longer 4-6th gear than the dc5 to improve gas milage. With regards to the Toyota 86 springy clutch, it does have a clutch assist spring. It has its pro's and cons. Feel wise it's sucks but you'll get use to it overtime. but when you put a higher capacity clutch on the car, you can still daily drive it. It will still feel just as soft but just with a shorter bite point. You can totally remove it to increase feel or just put a weaker assist springs from mtec . Btw thank you for your amazing review on the fd2. Now I want it even more.
Ronald San Pedro After driving my RSX for three months me friend let me drive his frs around, and wow the clutch sucks I might as well drive an automatic. I also drove one of me friends 2014 civic si, clutch also feels like the frs. Clutch, Gas and steering on these new cars are all dead. My question is, when did honda cars started feeling numb? I might buy a CSX or TSX one day.
@@cleoarchwhiza9006 I think the 9th generation. With all this new assist tech they are putting. If you're from Canada, get the csx type S. They are really cheap now and the best for fd2 conversions. They are really the last all Japan designed Honda. The most mechanical feeling Honda I ever drove was a b18c swapped ek9. Those shifter linkage b series almost feels as good as my s2000 direct mounted shifter. It's faster too.
Can never be enough hondas
Greatest You-Tube Channel. We need a story on the Honda CL7 or CL9 Euro R please, with you driving the car. I appreciate your channel and the information you bring, keep up the good work.
Love this channel! Thanks for sharing your impressions and insights on these legendary cars.
I saw fd2, i subbed, like and watched 💖
Iam subscriber since fd2 ep 01. 😉
I definitely love to see that EK9 review and it being driven, I’m from the US and developed a love for the Toyota JZX family. I’d love to see a Toyota Chaser or Mark II being reviewed by your guys, Love the JZX90 Mark II, I know a lot of them are being imported into the US now and hope I can buy one before they become too expensive
Cap, Masa and The FD2R what more can you ask for?
Please release a POV version of this without the conversations. I want to hear 2nd and 3rd gear :)
Nice driving insight into the FD2. As an Integra type R DC2 owner, I would love for you to review one on the channel. Hope you make this possible.
and the dc5 type r! maybe a comparison
Yes review more Honda!!!! More type r! Thank you!
Cant wait for you guys to try a colt ralliart version r
I have the mild USDM version of this, a 2009 Civic Si FA5. It has the K20Z3 with 197hp and redline is at 8,000 rpm. The suspension is comfortable for daily driving, though I will be upgrading the shocks and springs soon. I can confirm the A pillars are massive and the gas mileage is bad, but I love my car! I can't imagine how awesome an FD2 would be to own. Thanks for the video!
I had the FG2 Si Coupe myself our 8th Gen Si was really the best Si we got as it’s pretty damn close to what the FD2 offered. I’d say swap the final drive on your FA5 to the FD2 you’ll lose some highway mileage but get better street performance.
The consumption should be 9.0 to 10.5km/l for city driving. Do get your car checked. My favorite tyre for the FD2 is still the RE070. Next comes the RE007A. I tried the RE-71R but considered it too stiff. Regarding ride quality, the car feels a lot more comfortable at high speed (160-200) as if it was build just for that.
I changed my suspension setup to Tein Flex z, set it halfway. No more discomfort but still a beast in corners
Just a suggestion, have the interior camera on the drivers side so we can see the steering wheel and dash better!
My favourite Type R
Big Ups from Okinawa. I also own a FD2 CTR. I am one of 2 foreigners who own one. I installed a 7 point roll cage and the chasis stiffness is even better. For shifter choices try the Hybrid Racing shifter paired with the cable bushings. Feels amazing.
Should try and do a review on a Suzuki swift sport zc33s due to it being 975kg and turbocharged I think would be a good contender for the touge!!
DK iiiimmmmpuression
GOOOOO
whoa i didn't know that kouki version have more softer suspension.
I'd be curious to see a review on the Toyota Carina GT with the 4a-ge blacktop engine and 6 speed manual transmission. Might be a cool car to feature on the show.
This type r is soo slept on
This makes me want one more now
Value of FD2R just went up
Ilove this Honda Civic FD 2R
Sweet more touge run vids!
20:17 dang it ... Impressive indeed ... Responsive car + driver handling A++ ..
Love this 🤙🏽

Masa talkin' a lotta shit about my beloved DC5. You know what that means? An hour long review of a DC5 ITR!
needs more hondas
I'm getting one for sure within a year, masterpiece from Honda!
Can you do S2000?
At the end Massa left Captain hanging, tsk tsk... Such disrespect can only be settled on the touge!! EK9 vs FD2
*cranks the Eurobeat*
Captain could drive a Mazda Demio and still rinse him on the touge lol
7:00 Men the type r engine sounds like the motorcycle, nuts!
Maybe a cbr250r? Lol 😂
@@ur2slob724 😂😂 for sure(btw I don't know anything haha)
You can never have too many Hondas!!!
I wish Honda brings back the DC2 chasis. That style is the original Type R.
who is that kawasaki guy?? I LOVE HIM!
Sexiest car ever . Over here in Miami Fla trying to get my FA5 as close as possible to a Type R
Love the fd2
Mitsubishi 3000Gt review please, that car had so many things ahead of time
❤️❤️❤️😍FD2R
After a trip with a rented DC5R from Omoren, I wish I could take my personal FD2R up to Haruna for a night touge run...
Excellent content. Nothing like a NA Honda. Is it time to do a review of the FK8 Type R?
Hey JDM Masters!
Please do an Episode on the Mitsubishi GTO Twin Turbo (1996 - 1999) and the Mitsubishi FTO Version R in Manual (1997 - 2000)!
Please do not overlook these two Japanese underrated Gems.
Yes I agree looks like Lancer Evo and WRX.
Would like to hear your impressions on the FK8R. Maybe even the spoon demo one? :)
On fd chassis you feel like you are playing a simulation game :D
6:47 a Kawasaki Ninja 636 and a Honda CBR K20A passing :D
😍😍
Nice and clean
Too many Honda's coz they're too good! 😁👍🏼
I love this channel. JDM Masters we don't get these awesome cars in US. Can you please start a legit export business and I can be your first customer? After I saw the Accord Euro-R I haven't been able to sleep.
Just get the FA5 Si do a full FD2 swap, get the FD2 final drive and Hondata tuning to lower the VTEC engagement the K20Z3 is just as good.
Do an AE111 BZ R.
Reportint in!!
1:09 the camera man got distracted lol

Please review the FK8R. Even better review it alongside the spoon FK8 to compare. !one the homda content
Review a DC5 Type R!!

@Captian - any plans on (occasionally) doing a feature on the Euro car scene/culture in Japan?
Thank you 🙏🏼
Good!!!
Please make a review on honda civic type r fk8🙏
Get a Hondata Flashpro from Spoon and tune for better mileage.
Let me tune it. Been tuning my FD2 and it runs much better, better mileage and more power. Been fun driving my car. Have online suspension and Cusco sway bars. Big difference in driving.
😍
I want to go for a drive now!
I love Mitsubihisi Lancer gsr iii
Subaru Levorg maybe? It's not available in some markets so it would be interesting to see what it's like.
It’s literally just a CVT WRX but In wagon form.
omg he got some trap music in! wow!
Do all FD2r's have the lines on the bonnet? or do some not?
Love that road and drive it all the time! Hit me up when you want to do a video on the FK8!
Masa!
Sick hybrid bro.
Psych!
You should review the Honda eg9 sir
Absolute dream to hear it shift
As a former 86 owner i agree with everything you say. There's just something not right with the stock tuning of that car from body control, shifting, steering that made me sad and don't get me started on the FA20...garbage engine imo. All 86 owners go on about fwd sucks etc, let me tell you these type Rs, the clio williams i used to own are imo 100x more thrilling raw drivers car then 86.
